2011 Philadelphia Regional
After looking at the TIMS report on registration, I can only say that there is a TON of competition coming back to Philadelphia. So far we have no rookies (yet...) but I am sure there may be a few signing up last minute. Anyway, I know for a fact the Liacouras Center will be electric with competition this year. Although upsetting to see the competition being moved from Drexel, I believe that the Liacouras Center provides better space to actually watch.
Besides me, who else is psyched to play this year in Philly? I know for a fact that it will be a HEAVILY competitive regional and I surely cannot wait! |
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
Stupid Temple University...
Myself and other FRC alumni here were pretty disappointed to see that Drexel won't be the host of the regional...anyone know the cause? . |
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
I'm not too sure but if it's capacity I can totally see why. Last year, I did love being in that building and the small but lively atmosphere was just too exciting. The more I think about it, I really enjoyed DAC more than I did Liacouras. Akash, I will try and get more info about this. I hope that Drexel isn't completely shunned out. :/

As a Drexel student, I can tell you that its not becasue of construction (at least not anymore). I have heard a few rumors that its because of the new president comming in...

Anyway, we're planning on Competing in Philly again this year, assuming that it doesn't fill up before we can get in. Personally, I liked the Temple Venue in 2009 so the location change doesn't really bother me. I believe the switch may be due to the Temple Arena's Size. From what I can remember in 2009 it seems to be larger than Drexel's Gym, and if you check the Team Capacity it is set at 54 (I'm assuming they'll have some rookie spots as well) for this year while I believe Drexel's max was around 44 in 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010, though I may be wrong. |
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
341 is really looking forward to another great Philly Regional!!
Temple is a nice facility, but we will really miss Drexel. Drexel's DAC is the true home of the Philly Regional. (IMHO) |

Philly will be packed with competition yet again this year, that is one thing that Philly will never loose. It's always a great time and I can't wait to see what it brings. :)
|
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
Its looking unlikely I'll be able to make it to Philly this year. The philly regional has become somewhat of a second home for me, the atmosphere and the people surrounding it are top notch. I'm hoping I'll be able to make another soon in the future.

Should be a great regional as always!
I just noticed this: The Philadelphia Regional now has 3 Championship Chairmans award teams! :ahh: Woah! I guess that just shows how competitive this regional is! |

Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
Hey guys, don't hate on Temple! It's a great place!
Just wondering, has anyone made a flyer for the Philadelphia Regional yet? Two years ago, my brother and I spread the word, and got a few professors and faculty from Temple to come, and I was planning on trying to expand on that a little bit. I know of at least 3-4 professors in the Computer Science department who work on robotics, and would love to come and see the robots. In all, I think the Philly Regional is one of the best in the country. Not only is it in Philly, but we have some of the best teams and the best competition. My first year (2008) I stayed with the team and watched the final rounds, and last year I was the last member of the team there when the final rounds ended, and I do not plan to leave early this year! Good luck everyone, and can't wait to see you there!! |
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
I think the Philly regional moving back to Temple like it was on my freshman year has its goods and bads. The Liacouras Center does have a lot more room then Drexel, and I think that is a big plus. I think Drexel had only 9x9 pits, but I might be wrong. I did like the location of Drexel (I thank my dad for pointing out all the places you can get food there, he went to Drexel and all himself), but it wasn't hard to find food at Temple either. Overall, it really is the being in the city feel of Drexel vs the in the outskirts but a nice location of Temple. Either way, we will all have fun.
|
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
Im sorry to say that 639 will not be attending Philly this year. To Boston we will go! Have fun everyone, especially 365!

Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
I am pumped for Philly.
|
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
272 Will be in Philly as always. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
You can forget about Drexel at least for the near future. Its a combination of things including Drexel's new "management". We also recently lost a huge advocate of FIRST at Drexel and the powers that be in my opinion lack his vision. Plus with us moving to a regionized system similar to Michigan's. Drexel is probably to big/expensive for the mini 2 1/2 day qualifiers and to small for the regions championship. However I will always have such fond memories of Drexel. 2008 anyone....Yes it still haunts me :) |
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
357 as well is really looking forward to another awesome Philly Regional!!
I am however disappointed that it will be at Temple this year :( .. I know temple is bigger, but Drexel just gave of such a unique experience, and the excitement there was the most of any regional I have gone to. No matter what it will still be a great time! |

The Firebirds are super excited for Philly this year!
We will once again be hosting our "Firebirds Fiesta" team social Friday night, April 8th. All teams are invited, and admission is only $5. Attached is a flier with info, and we'll be posting updates here on CD, and we'll also be making tons of announcements at the competition. |

Hello all! We're now counting down the days until robots take over the Liacouras Center. I just wanted to remind team coaches and mentors to check their email for special directions and details regarding the event.
We'd also like to thank frc2641 for hosting the event's webcast and adding another layer to make the event more special. You should be able to access it at the link below. http://team2641.com/2011-regional-webcast/ Thanks, Nate |

Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
I was a bit bored at work today, so I figured I'd do my predictions a day early.
Believe it or not, it’s the last week of Regional Competitions for the 2011 Season. Some teams hope to extend their seasons here by qualifying for the Championship, but for many it’s the end of the line. Philadelphia is historically home to one of the most competitive and unpredictable regional events in all of FRC. Only once in the last 10 years has the #1 Seed taken home the Banner, and the last time we ventured to the Liacouras Center (2009) the Dark Horse #6 Alliance of 365, 395 and 56 took home the gold in rather convincing fashion. Top Tier: 341 – Miss Daisy, without a doubt, is fielding one of the strongest robots in the field. If not for Electrical problems in Florida, they’d be coming into Philly with one Finals appearance - if not a Regional Win. If 341 can come out of the gate swinging like they did in 2010, then they might just pull off another Philly Regional Win. 103 – For those of you that haven’t seen the Cybersonics yet, I’d suggest you check out 25’s Machine this year. The two machines share similar elevators and claws, with the only distinguishable difference being the drive train. Their Elevator is among the fastest in FRC, but their claw just wasn’t able to make the cut in Florida. Count on 103 making some tweaks and putting up some serious numbers. 365 – MOE has won the last 3 Philadelphia Regionals so of course they get a mention here. I’m not sure if they’re up to their usual standard this year, but they are by no means bad. They were a very capable scorer in Chesapeake with an equally capable Mini-bot. If 365 can avoid the type of Defense they encountered in the Chesapeake Elims then they just might leave Philly with another Banner. 1647 – The Iron Devils are sitting right on the cusp of the Top Tier for me. They made it to the finals in NJ with 1089 after winning some very hard matches, relying heavily on their quick Mini-bot – but their tube scoring leaves something to be desired. If they can turn their game play up a notch, then expect 1647 to do well here. Tips: 1403 – Cougar Robotics has fielded an extremely capable machine this year. It was capable of putting up its fair share of tubes in Chesapeake, but if memory serves me correctly, they were lacking a Mini-bot. Expect 1403 to work on fine tuning their machine throughout Thursday and Friday and do some damage in Eliminations. 272 – The Cyber Crusaders had a decent run in New York, but the lack of a consistent Mini-Bot and some bad luck in Alliance Selections left them sitting in the Stands after being Eliminated in the Quarter Finals. I hope to see 272 make some tweaks with their Mini-bot and it’s deployment and come out as Strong as ever. 395 – 2Train Robotics is one of the few Regional Winners in this field. Expect them to do some big things, but I’m curious to see if they’ll fair as well as they did in New York City. 357 – Royal Assault is always a Favorite in Philly. From what I’ve heard about their bot, it should be pretty good, but with Philly being their first competition, I hope that they don’t run into any issues. 486 – The Positronic Panthers won Philadelphia last year as the 3rd robot of the #1 Alliance, and they were by no means carried. They’ve come back for 2011 with a more than capable machine, and were able to put up some decent points in New Jersey. Expect them to be a player in the Elims, at least. 1640 – Sabotage Seems to have fielded another good machine for 2011. 1640 pulled off a semi final appearance at Finger Lakes, only losing to the eventual Champions. Expect them to do some big things here. 2729 – Storm is back for another Philadelphia Regional. They had a more that respectable performance in New Jersey, putting up some decent scores, while working on their Mini-bot’s consistency. I’m not sure how they’ll do here, I could see them being one of the top players, but at the same time I could see them slipping to 14th or 15th in the draft - we’ll have to wait and see. 56 – Robbe Xtreme is fielding another capable robot this year. From what I saw at DC, they have some serious potential that could be harnessed with some more practice. Harnessing that potential could be the difference between making it to the Finals and having another Quarter Final Exit. In any case, they’ve got a darn cool Mini-bot and deployment system, expect it to work well. 303 – Panther Robotics built another strong robot for 2011. With a Regional victory under their belts already, they’ve already proven their worth. Expect 303 to play a solid all around game and make it into the Eliminations. Wildcard: 3553 – The South Philly Rambots have fielded one of the most interesting machines that the Philadelphia Regional may have ever seen. Their robot is essentially a semi-mobile wall, capable of expanding to approximately 7 feet wide. From what I’ve seen this could be a huge advantage for them, and for whoever they ally with in Eliminations. 3553’s major flaw will be their inability to control their destiny, as they rely on a scorer or two to get points on the board while they play defense. A good Mini-bot should help cover this flaw up somewhat, but who knows right now. Others: The remainder of the teams playing in the Eliminations will probably be some of these teams: 87, 102, 223, 316, 433, 834, 1302, 1370, 1712, 1980, 2607, 3123 and 3629. Notes: The Evolution of Mini-Bots since the earlier weeks of competition will be interesting to see. Almost every team that has competed in a week 4 or earlier event has probably been exposed to a “fast” mini-bot in one form or another so expect smart teams to show up with newer “Faster” mini-bots. Hopefully by this point in the season, there will be more teams with Mini-bots than without, and that should help move the focus of the game back to Tube Scoring and winning the Mini-bot race – not just being the only one to get to the top. Ubertubes will be as important here as they were anywhere else. Expect at least one team to attempt scoring two Ubertubes in Autonomous (Most likely 341), and expect each Elimination Alliance to be capable of putting up at least two Ubertubes on the top row. |

Congrats to the Blue Alliance (303, 1640, 265, and 2607) for #winning the 2011 Philly regional! 1391 - great job! Wish I could have been with you this year instead of out in SF! 316 and 486, thanks for fighting with us to the end! //Dillon Compton //Ex-1391 Mentor |

And of course a huge thanks to our alliance! To 365 for being an awesome guide for our official captainship, and 303 for their stellar performance as well. And certainly to 2607 for that last-minute save! Great to work with all of you and hope to see you in St. Louis. |
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone that volunteered to make the Philly Regional an amazing experience as always. Our kids had a blast. You could not stop them from dancing and cheering the whole time. :)
Congratulations to the the winning alliance of Teams 1640, 365, 303, and 2607). What an amazing finish. I am sure that some people thought it was over when 365 had to step out. But the alliance found a way to win. A great lesson for every kid at the regional. Never, ever give up!! Congratulations to Team 433 the Firebirds on winning Chairman's. Hopefully some day you will be our neighbors in the Hall of Fame. And finally I wanted to say how much we enjoyed working with the Iron Devils 1647 and the Lumberjacks 1517. You guys were amazing partners with great drive crews and powerful machines. We are really sorry that your season had to end on such a disputed Red Card. That is not how a season should end. You should both feel proud about how you performed. Team 341 is really looking forward to St. Louis. Best wishes to every team going to Champs! |
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
On behalf of 3553 I would like to say a couple thank you's for the amazing time we had at the Philadelphia regional:
The Staff/Refs/Volunteers- despite our penalties and a red card in qualifications, calls were fair. The even was run smoothly and the staff was amazing. 272 and 834- Thank you 272 for taking a big risk and selecting us as your first pick for the 6th alliance. Your encouragement towards the other mentors and the driver was incredible, we are just sorry we couldn't help you reach farther into eliminations. It was fun while it lasted. Thank you 834 for being an AMAZING second round offensive pick. You had an autonomous that was more reliable than most of the captains, great work. 103 and 56, thank you for playing some heavy defense on us in the first quarterfinal match! That was so much fun to watch! Your strategy during our second match was incredible and we are honored to lose to such dominant and smart teams. Let's play again real soon. Thank you to the teams who helped me personally with design and strategy all season such as 816, 357, and 1647. You guys are ALL class acts, and I look forward to continuing our partnerships in the future. Truly three of the best teams in the area. Thank you to 365 for your help with troubleshooting with our pneumatics, again, such a class act. It was great talking to your mentors all weekend. And finally, a thank you to everyone who came to our pit to talk to the students and mentors and give words of encouragement and applause for what we are doing at South Philly High School. Our Rookie All Star award represents what all of you recognized about our team, and the impact we have on our students. A woman came over (so sorry I didn't even ask what team or name but I think from 341) while just the mentors were in the pit, and said "So you guys are the ones from South Philly HS?.....Wow....I know all about this school, so what you guys are doing there is amazing." THAT right there is what keeps us going. See you all during the offseason and next season, and hopefully many of you in St. Louis.:) |

Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
I wanted to toss in my thanks to all of the teams at the Philadelphia Regional, as well. Team 1370 had a great time and we all learned a lot. It was especially heart-wrenching for us to be the #4 backup team with so many bots breaking during the elimination rounds.
However, it was nice to be able to tour the pits and help out so many other teams with their miscellaneous problems and needs, especially 303 (Panther Robotics), 3167 (Environmental Tectonics Crusaders), 2234 (Antibot), and 3182 (Athena's Warriors). Royal Assault, Team 357 - Congratulations on your Engineering Inspiration Award. Your pit ambassador was well trained! He got me to read your business plan as I was rushing by to meet up with our competition team! Nice document! Al Ostrow, Team 341 - Congratulations on your Woodie Flowers Award. Extremely well deserved. You finally get some credit for your endless hard work. Enjoy! Don Bowers and the Regional Organizing Committee - we understand all the logistics involved in making an event like this happen. Kudos for all your work. Event Volunteers - People who give their time for activities like this are the true heroes. Thanks to all our Philly whiteshirts! All Participating Teams - The Philly Regional, whether at Temple or Drexel, has been special because of all the special people and team members. Thanks for all the spirited and friendly competition! Temple University - While Drexel has been our Philly Regional home most of the time over the past decade or so, I really enjoy the Temple venue, especially the seats!!!!! Our Alliance Partners in the eliminations - 1640, 303, 2607 - It was a tough road all the way, but somehow, our alliance managed to make it through. It was great how each partner contributed to this regional win. From broken arms to back-up bots to adaptive strategies, I thank you, partners! For those teams who have finished your official FIRST season, we look forward to seeing you at off-season events (Duel on the Delaware is scheduled for Saturday, October 22nd). For those continuing on to St Louis and the Championship, congratulations! We will see you there. Safe travels. |
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
Well, this years Philadelphia Regional at Temple was just as memorable as those we've previously held at Drexel. All of the volunteers were awesome and the teams were even more spectacular in the ways you played and worked with each other. Hopefully everyone who tuned in was able to see just how hard Philly plays.
On behalf of Storm Robotics 2729, we'd like to thank everyone for making the event so memorable and to send big congrats to all of the award winners. Special thanks to MOE for helping us getting our autonomous code up and running too. That was a major accomplishment for us this weekend! Iron Devils - It was a lot of fun watching a cheering for you all during the playoffs. Sorry things didn't work out in the end. I forsee more great things for you all in the future. Looking forward to seeing everyone back here next year! |

Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
All our thanks yous have been said in person to the people that needed to hear them. If not, I would like to thank 341 & 1517 for putting together one hell of an alliance. Also, a big thank you to teams 103, 365, 816, and 2729 for your continued support and efforts. Our congratulations go out to 433, 357, the Dean's List finalists, and Al Ostrow.
We left our mark on Philadelphia and aside from being upset with the red card, our team came out with one large value. Integrity was in every Iron Devil that day because they did what they could to the best of their ability and created one hell of a robot. I loved every minute competing with it in qualifications and eliminations. Also, teams are recognizing what our team can do in FIRST. As for next year, I will be heading off to California and be leaving behind the Philadelphia scene. The Iron Devils, however, will be back to get what they ultimately deserve. |
Re: 2011 Philadelphia Regional
Thanks 341 for offering us your batteries during Finals in case ours died on us! We've been working on figuring out how we are going to fix this problem, but it is definitely a work in progress. So thanks again!
