3. In addition to 1 human players have trouble throwing sometimes to even the middle of the field playing right to the other alliance.

I am confussed by all this throw throw throw. I get there is times for it but not like this

Agreed, all I saw was "I'MMA THROW THIS HERE AND HERE AND HERE!!!" (very scientific statement right here).

I still think in elims, or any difficult quali match that has more than 2 competent robots, people will limit their floor loading/tube throwing.

I would instruct OUR human players to throw them all on the field, if and only if I knew we could score much more effectively than the other alliance.

It seemed that either throwing them all out, OR being smart and starving the other alliance, made very little difference compared to better/less effective robots.

As suspected, if two good teams with dependable minibots go up against teams that dont deploy any, its over.

Are you presuming that those without minibots are not bold enough to attempt to legally block those that do from deploying them?

I am noticing that all these tubes are clogging the lanes for the slot feeders. It makes it very hard to get to the slot with three tubes in your way.

So far 2016 and 1647 have VERY fast minibots, I haven't had the chance to see 25 yet.

25's got a decent minibot, but I've yet to see them deploy it yet.

Deployment seems to be more important than the speed of the minibot. Heck, we've got two (twins) sub 2 second minibots sitting on our table and can't get them to play nice with our deployment system.

2016 is firing on all cylinders. By the time they get to champs (aka drivers get a bit more practice) look out.

Strong Start for 2016

2016's elegant design makes them agile, quick, and able to score with style and grace. I am looking forward to their next match on Saturday morning when they team with 1923 and 2180.

Also . . .
25 is much stronger than their W/L record would suggest. 1218 also impressed me a lot. Most teams seemed to get stronger as the day progressed and a lot more teams were finishing with a mini-bot.

It will be a great second day in NJ.

Random Matchplay rears its ugly head with a top-eight robot in 28th.
Not that 25 should really care, seeing as any team would definitely look to them for an alliance pick at some point. Provides for some drama at least.

I have a quick question for all teams participating at the New Jersey regional or at other regionals who are reading this post: While I know that I can view the live webcast of the matches tomorrow morning, have any teams posted videos of their qualification matches yet? Thanks.

How did 2016 pick up that red card? I didn't see anything obvious in the match feed. Does anyone have it on youtube/etc yet?

The judges said that they picked up a tube in the opposing alliance's lane.

From the webcast POV it looked like it was only partially in the lane. I thought it was a legal grab. And you mean referees not judges

Awww GRT (and our awesome alliance mates) got knocked out in the semis =(
Looks like our pneumatic system started breaking, and then no one got minibots up on our side... =.=

Still excited to see underdog Alliance#6 up against 2016 and company. Go go underdog!

EDIT: Aww, first match goes to the crazy amazing Pioneers and Monkey Wrenches and Panthers. Not entirely unexpected, really, they earned 1st Alliance.

EDIT2: Congrats to 2016, 1676, and 303, and a double to 2016 for Chairmans. Big thanks to 1676 for hosting the webcast--I wouldn't have been able to keep up without it.

Big congrats to our friends 1676 and 2016 on their Championship AND 2016 for another Chairman's. It was also great seeing my friends on 1647 and 1089 breaking through to the finals. Awesome eliminations matches.

11 is excited to playing with 1676 and 25 in Virginia. 3553 is excited to play with 816 and 1647 in Philadelphia.

Since I'm pretty sure I'm about the only person associated with my team who ever actually posts at all on this forum, I'll say this. Huge thanks to 1676 and 2016 for picking us as an alliance partner. I may be a bit biased, but I think it worked out great. Hope to see another good competition in Philadelphia a few weeks from now!

We did horrible this year, mostly because of a drive problem we had, but it was definitely the best time I've had at NJ yet. It was awesome seeing our minibot on two other robots, although we never got it working on our own.

Good job 2016!

Oh, and HUGE thank you to 1676!

Thank you everyone for all the great comments.. It has been a fun year and a good start for us, I am really proud of the students and all the mentors. They put in a lot of time and effort into this and it seems to have paid off.

Sure Cass. What I find is that teams tend to hold many more seats than they could fill, often in prime locations, shutting out visitors who won't be there later anyway. Holding 3 rows for a team with 50 students isn't a real problem, holding a dozen rows might be. Not to mention: The teams have the advantage of persistence. They can wait a short while and get the seats they might need without resorting to 'saving' them.

I was furious when my own team 1676 started saving seats on Saturday morning. I made my point with the well-intentioned adults leading the way. Indeed, we ultimately filled an entire section, well over 140 seats, and overflowed into whatever was available nearby.

We were with you in your first qualification match, against 25. One of your mentors came over for the usual pre-match meeting and when he found out that we had major drive problems (couldn't turn, at all) he got us up and running.

Although, there were more problems with it that we didn't find until it was too late (two matches to go, that late). After we got that fixed we were doing great but two matches aren't much.

I didn't get his name but he was awesome.

Can't wait to see the matches up on TBA!

We would like to thank a few teams for making the New Jersey Regional another great competition. First off we would like to congratulate teams 1676, 2016, and 303. And yet again 2016 for winning chairmans!
We would like to also thank teams that helped us. 2016, thank you so much for everything you gave us through out the build season. Teams 816 and 1218, thank you for the parts you provided at the regional. We would like to thank teams 1647 and 1676 for letting us use your mini bots and spending countless hours making it work.
We hope to see you all in St. Louis!

I forgot to mention in my last post, thank you to 1676 for picking us as the first pick. It was a great pleasure to play with you guys and had an absolute blast.

Also 303 you guys did a great job in the final round when our gripper failed and i know it wasnt as planned originally and a sudden change in strategy... but it was fun.

*EDIT* - I meant there should never have been a switch on our part :) 303 did a great job in the transition)

I want to thank 1089, 1647 and 102 for a great finals, and providing us with some awesome matches to watch in the semifinals :)

I finally understood better this year the amount of time and effort that all the volunteers put in to make this event happen, as well as all the members that plan this event and I want to thank all the people for making this event a great success and for being a week 1 event making it flow as smoothly as they do.

Thanks again all!!

That kind of surprises me considering they could probably start practicing with their 07 robot from kickoff.

And congrats to 303,1676 and especially 2016. Your team has really reached another level over these last 2 years and it was amazing to watch you guys in action.

The issues 25 had were more involved with minibot/deployment. The robot seemed to be driven well, at least to me.

It just came down not enough time

Overall losing was the best thing for our team because it taught us valuable lessons and brought a few folks down to earth and losing to our friends and past partners was not a bad feeling

I completely agree with this. From the stands, the rest of 1676 was overcome with fear when they saw that something had gone wrong with 2016's claw, but we were ultimately blown away by what amazing defense they were able to play, along with 303's amazing abilities as well (recall that we lost last year's second final match due to a ball prematurely falling off the ball return system; we didn't want another thing to go wrong!). All in all, we would like to give a HUGE thanks to both teams, and congratulate everyone on a job well done, we couldn't have done it without you!

Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional

Another year, another great NJ Regional. I cant believe this is my last one as a student! so many memories, I realllyyyy hope i will be able to make it the next few years (college beckons lol). To me this was an amazing way to go out. I've never seen one of our robots make it that far at a regional, so to tmake it to the finals is incredible.

Ive been involved with scouting and strategy for 3 of my 4 years on the team, and this year was way better than any other year. I never had the chance to actually go out on the field and handcraft an alliance. I was upset about declining 2180, I love their team, but our scouting team had a partner in mind if we made it to the top 8. Lo and behold 1647 was still available after we declined 2180 and formed our own alliance. That was a fantastic bit of luck, as 1647 was one of our top 3 ranked robots at NJ at the end of quals. I was so happy i was able to pick them!

Im so proud of our alliance for not giving up after that first round beatdown. We could have played out the second match of the QF's much like the first but we figured out a strategy and WON! very proud to say we're the only alliance to beat 25 in elims in 6 (?) years! A very big shout out to 1647, your consistent scoring and beastly minibot all but guaranteed us a ton of of points. 102 played amazing defense throughout and without them, the opposing alliances would have scored at will. We formed a great strategy and made it all the way to the finals as a 6 seed! Good luck 1647 and 102 at all your future events. Sorry 25 ;)

I want to give a shout out to 2016, 1676 and 303. when i saw the final alliance selection results, I knew that if we got to the finals, we would be facing a major challenge. 2016 and 1676 were the top two robots at the event (imo). 303 was another amazing robot and when your faced with an alliance like that, you should be proud to even be in their presence lol. Congrats to you guys for the win, especially 1676 for their second NJ regional in a row! I know 1676's drivers and I personally told them how amazing they were! Good luck to all of you guys!

Congrats to 2016 for the Chairman's win! It was well deserved. I loved the rap! See you guys in DC in a few weeks and Good luck to you guys at St. Louis

Also, congrats to Lenny Bernas, from my own team on making Dean's List. Lenny contributes so much to our team and it was amazing to see his reaction when his name was called. He literally jumped out of his seat and almost tripped down the stairs in his excitement to get to the field!

That about wraps it up, I cant believe my last NJ regional is over. Upsetting that i was only able to attend one day of competition this year (i unluckily got sick on thursday and couldnt go on friday), but what a day it was. I cant wait for DC and I really hope i can come back to jersey next year!

First off, I'd like to congratulate ALL of the teams that competed at NJ this year; it was an insanely awesome competition and all of you made it great =)

I'd also like to congratulate 2016, 1676, and 303 for winning -- you guys were AMAZING and the minute you aligned I legitimately started jumping up and down (that's pretty characteristic of me). Also, I want to congratulate 2016 on winning Chairman's and 2199 for winning EI -- NJ's a stacked regional and it's an honor to have competed with you this year.

I also want to give a shout to all of the teams that stopped by our pits/I hung out with this weekend -- you are all superstars in my book.

I'd also like to give a shout out to Team 2590; after our team worked to start them in 2008 (my freshman year), I've watched them grow and constantly have been impressed with their team and program. I'm so glad I got to hang out with y'all at this regional and CANNOT wait to do it again in DC! =)

Also, if you didn't get a chance to stop by our pit and would like our business plan and/or business plan presentation tips, PM and I'm more than happy to send it you =)

And... thanks to our alliance partners 1647 and 102 for putting up a great fight the entire regional. You were both awesome :D

Thanks Aashay -- it helps a lot when you have such a great and supportive team to inspire you. I still don't know how to even begin to express how honored and excited I am to have been selected as one of this year's winners.
And... I don't remember "tripping." Just saying. Lol

Finally, I want to congratulate the other Dean's List Award Winner from 2265, The Iron Maidens, Francesca. It's an honor to have been selected with you.

In a month we take on VCU and I expect a much more formidable front. Gonna be fun

I agree. Congratulations to 1676, 2016 and 303! You guys had a very well deserved win. Also, a HUGE congratulations to Pete Kieselbach for Volunteer of the year award. I'm so glad to see mentors being recognized for the time and effort put into this region and program.

Another Fantastic NJ Regional is in the books.

Congrats to 1676, 2016 and 303 on the Win. You guys really earned it, and played some of the most exciting matches I've seen in a long time.

Congrats to the Finalist Alliance of 1089, 1647 and 102. Your upset of the #3 seed may have been one of the most unexpected victories in the history of the NJ Regional.

Also, Congrats to 2016 on the Chairmans. You guys are truly an example for us all to follow.

Thanks to 2180 and 1302 for being such strong alliance partners. You did everything we could ask, and more. I apologize for our Arm breaking in the Semi's, and thank you 2180, for choosing to keep us in to play defense.

Not much, and not as good as what TBA will get, but enough to hold us over for now at least I guess.

Adding more now, mostly our matches and 2458s. I do have some of the elimination matches as well, Ill try to get everything I can up.

The entire regional was archived by us (1676) and I have uploaded to TBA to be parsed. Everything is there, but in a raw format that has everything. I said this in another thread, but if anyone needs any videos, do not hesitate to email me at levyro@team1676.com -- I have all of the official video!

Could not agree more with this... we were soo happy to have another offensive/defensivce robot combo that allowed us to make this transition. Great work by team 303 to take on the offensive scoring....

BTW anyone have any video of the finals matches.. I would love to see some of those matches again :)....

25 - you guys are an amazing robot year in and year out and I would not want to be one to face you in Virginia, I am sure you guys will have a rocking team and robot for VCU and it will be tough to reckon with.

Congratulations to Teams 1676, 2016, and 303 on the win! You guys deserved it—all three robots were more than capable of scoring tubes and 1676 and 2016 had some of the quickest and most reliable minibots at the regional. We can't wait to play with/against 1676 in Virginia! I would also like to congratulate 2016 on their second blue banner, Chairman's. Your video was clever and fun, and really showed how much outreach your team does in spreading the message of FIRST. Is it posted online anywhere? It's definitely worth sharing.

During our strategy meeting before eliminations (and to one of our alumni in the stands), I mentioned that getting past the #6 seed of 1089, 1647, and 102 was going to be the toughest set of matches we would play on the right side of the bracket; 1089 had beaten us in an earlier qualification match, and 1647 could very well hold their own. I knew that after the first match, Mr. Gregory and company would come up with a new strategy to give us a run for our money, and they did. As Mr. Cokeley said, losing to our friends was not a bad feeling.

Thank you to Team 1923 for selecting our team to join your alliance. Your team has grown so much since 2006 and it was great to finally be on the same side of the field! Also, to 1860, you were a pleasure to work with and did an excellent job in your role on the alliance.

For me, one of the most memorable moments from this past weekend was watching Lenny Bernas of Team 1089 make the Dean's List. I know how much he puts into FIRST, and so to see him being honored was incredible. I don't think I'll ever forget the look on his face when he came back to the stands and hugged Sara R. It was picture perfect. On top of being finalists and winning KPC&B Entrepreneurship, what a great close to 1089's weekend!

Finally, congratulations to Pete K. for being the Volunteer of the Year! It was long overdue, and we vastly appreciate all of your support and work in the region!

I video taped most of 2016's matches. Give me a shout and I will send a raw file to you. I'm afraid when the action got exciting the camera may have wobbled a bit. :)

Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional

Well here comes my long awaited Thank You...

1089:

When I was standing on the floor waiting deciding on my alliance pick, I was thinking about the final teams and who I would be picking for the 7th alliance. Unannounced, you guys declined and provided me the opportunity to play with a team high on our list. Not only was our elimination run exciting but also some of the best fun I have had in all of my three years of FIRST. Thank you guys!

102:
What an outstanding alliance partner you guys were. The defense that your drive team played was outstanding and really allowed us to use our bots to the full potential. I know you guys really had a great time since it was the first time in history all three of us had made it to the Finals.

2016, 1676, 303
You guys deserve the regional win hands down. We knew we were out engineered with machines so our strategy ultimately decided the outcomes. Regardless, this brought attention to our machine and revisions will be made shortly for Philly. I know that when we touch down there, we will take the same heart that we brought to the elims in NJ and get a banner of our own.

25:
Shaun, drive team, and the rest of Raider Robotix, don't let this one thing let you guys down whatsoever. I know that the past weekend was a rough one and like you said in a previous post "...it brought you back down to earth." I have no doubt in my mind that you will go to VA and crush the competition.

Side note to Shaun, thanks for providing all the great information to our team each day. I really like that since last year you have taken us under 25's wing and really have seen the opportunity the team has to be great. Thank you again man.

1923:

Wayne and team, you guys really have one hell of a bot. Surprisingly, a few things restricted us from playing with you guys in the elimination rounds but at least we got to play up against you guys. Hopefully, that can be renewed with pending our trip to St. Louis in late April.

2729:

Congrats on the Semi-Finals guys! 3 years and you are already showing FIRST that you guys are a high caliber team. I am really excited for the teams future and to play again in Philly with you guys.

816:

Dustin, Nick, and team, you guys showed NJ the great potential you had. Unfortunately, all of the breakdowns and replacements really hit you hard when it came to competing. I know you guys are reloading like ourselves for Philly since the competition is going to be fierce. Remember, were right around the corner for help so don't be afraid to hit us up.

Akash:

Hey man

Refs, Announcers, Volunteers, and Others:

Thank you for all your support this past weekend. Without you guys, we would not be in the position we are currently at today. From the communications problems all the way to our autonomous problems, you never ceased to respond back to us in a professional manner. I really thank you guys for that. Hopefully, I will see most of the same faces in Philly in a few short weeks.

Hehe, I'm my own team?:o

It was really fun hanging out with you guys! Even more fun sharing in on your successes.

See you in Philly, Cory. I expect continuous improvement.

So much for being Shaker's mascot, Akash? Way to betray us by going to Drexel.

The first thing I have to say is a massive thanks you to teams 2016 and 303 for being brilliant alliance partners! After that I have to thank all our opponents for a ton of wonderful matches. The only thing I remember about allot of them is the intensity.

Now that I've done that I'm going to go back to sleep. I barely got any sleep during Trenton and now I'm making up for it.

Reloading?

Psh, if everything falls into place, we'll be replacing half of our robot on Thursday. ;)

Some thanks and congratulations:

Congrats to 303, 2016, and 1676 for winning! You guys deserve it, we were cheering you guys on the whole time.

Thanks to 219 and 224, for being incredibly awesome pit neighbors to us, constantly sharing tools with each other.

192, you guys should definitely try and come to the NJ Regional again, you guys were one of the nicest teams to play with in qualifications.

1547, congrats on the Imagery Award, and thanks for the Best Looking Team award!

75, thanks for letting us borrow your printer, then having that not work and you guys borrowing our printer. And for being friendly the entire competition :p

Also, thanks to anyone I forgot to mention in this post

Cody,

You guys were awesome to work with. The attention and determination that you had on Friday and Saturday was awesome. I am sorry I couldn't come over and help all day because I was driving but I really hope to see you guys improve over the next few years.

If you need any help with anything, PM me and I will try my best to get 1647 to get you guys whatever you need.

On behalf 1860, I'd like to say MUITO OBRIGADO:

Muito obrigado 75 and 2016, you guys are awesome. Every year you guys help us with many things, but your friendship is the most valuable and important thing that we can get. Hope to keep this forever. Thank you friends.

Muito obrigado 1676. As I told you Rotolo, "it's not about robot, is about people". The treatment and patience that each member of your team gave us was awesome. We have many difficulties with language, but it was never difficult for you. Thank you by looking for us and everytime effort to understand us.

Muito obrigado 1923 and 25, our alliance partners. Thank you by the invite and to possibility us play the NJ finals again. We expected, at least, repeat 2006, when we've played the final match counter that AWESOME 25's machine. Unfortunately, our grabber broke on the third match, and we can't help you to hang tubes. But I think that despite the defeat, this match was wonderful. 3 tubes during autonomous and 4 minibots climbing the tower. Thank you to provide us this opportunity.

Hope to see you next year, I really don't know why we didn't attempt NJ in 2007, 2008 and 2009. Can't imagine better place and better teams than you! :)

Nós admiramos muito vocês!

Rafael, you guys are as great a team as I have ever met. My only disappointment is that I could not speak with all of your team, because my Portugese is not so good ;) Next time, I will study with my colleagues in Campinas and then we can have some good conversations.

What you are doing for your kids is wonderful. These are the kids that will make the future better, for themselves, Brazil, and everyone else.

I am glad that I helped make your visit better.

Don
