2011 New Jersey Regional
Figured I'd kick off the topic. So who's returning to NJ? What do you expect? Any rookies or first time NJers coming?
I think Its going to be a blast as always! |
Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
Well Brandon, like I stated in our PM's we will be returning to NJ after our two year hiatus. I am SO excited that we are too since the playing field is very even for everyone. This provides teams that are going to be in other regionals an introduction to the game and how to play it. I know this will be very important when we go to Philly as well. I truly cannot wait until the regional though. I know for a fact that it will be very competitive and fun as well.

1676 is looking forward to it!

Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
Teams I personally enjoy seeing every year:
1676 - I just like you guys. First thing I look for at NJ is usually your trailer in the parking lot :P 2016 - Awesome bot every year 224 - Made our last '09 match the match I remember most to this day. 816 - Lovin' that fro. Had fun helping you guys out for that entire half second this year, just to see you beat us later. haha. 303 - Thanks to them, we got our first trip into the eliminations. 1089 - All around huge help. 1923 - Helped us a ton in '09 |
Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
Just a quick piece of info for everyone, we are registered for NJ as of yesterday.
|
Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
Personally, I miss the NJ atmosphere. Our team decided not to go last year, but I loved the intensity, the venue, and the people! Although there are always the set up problems, those are at every regional. If it were up to me, NJ would be our first pick.
Im sure a few of us will be visiting, as always, to say a brief hello to everyone. Good luck to every team attending!!!! :D |
Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
816 will be back in Jersey once again. Hopefully we'll be able to improve upon our Finalist Performance from last year.

And let me know if there's anything we can do to pay back the help you gave us last year. You're more than welcome to come practice with us towards the end of Build Season. |

Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
Team 422 isn't going to the New Jersey Regional this year. The schedule and distance are too conflicting. I know I will miss being in Trenton this year to watch probably the best tournament of all of the regionals because of its Week 1 slot and very skilled and large-scale veteran teams, and the historically "upstart" rookies that really know how to fly out of the gate, like Overdrive.
I'll definitely be missing 1676! I love your team, and your website! I hope to see some people from the NJ regional either in Baltimore of Richmond, VA! |

Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
As far as I know we will have a VERY packed house this year. Several teams from NJ won't be able to make it due to standardized testing that week, but that being said I argue that we will be THE most diverse regional out there.
We have 38 Teams from New Jersey 8 Teams from New York 8 Teams from Pennsylvania 1 Team from Virginia 1 Team from Maryland 1 Team from California 1 Team from Connecticut 1 Team from Canada 1 Team from Turkey 2 Teams from Brazil. This should be a great event! And my advise posting should be coming in the next few weeks! See you all then! |

Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
OK, here's my annual "Things to remember about the NJ regional"
1) This is the first year in recent memory where the forecast doesn't call for snow this week. Which is awesome. That being said the weather here is kinda wonky. Combine that with the fact that we are playing in an ice rink, please dress appropriately. It's easier to take off an extra layer if you're hot, than to try to find extra clothes if you're cold. 2) Don't save seats. If you have a group of students then it's understood you want to sit to get together for safety reasons. But if someone comes and wants to sit with you, don't be so quick to shoo them away. If there is ONE person, and you blatantly have more than one seat just let them sit, you might go a long way to spread the good word of what this program is about. 3) Safety first. Remember to wear close toed shoes, and safety goggles. If you don't have safety goggles you won't be allowed into the pits. It's black and white, no goggles no pits. We don't have nearly enough for everyone, so make sure that for everyone that will have access to your pits, you have goggles to go around (that includes parents that are visiting) 4) Please be patient. This year is our first year doing a bag and tag event. So there are bound to be some hiccups. Combine that with the fact that we are a first week event, it's only natural to become hot under the collar. Just take a deep breath and we can all get through this together. 5) Thank a volunteer. We don't get paid, we do this job for the sheer fact that we love FIRST and want to see you kids have a good time. We pull long hours, are standing around all day and barely get time to go to the bathroom sometimes. A thank you and a hand shake go a long way! That's all I can think of for right now, but I'm sure there are things I forgot. I look forward to seeing everyone on Thursday! |

Just to follow-up on what George said here, please be patient and be sure to have read the "Bag and Tag" document on the FIRST website so you are aware of the procedures the event is following. I have never understood this. I don't understand why holding a certain amount of seats so a team can sit together is problematic. I know I will get people wanting to debate this with me, but that's not what I'm looking for, I would just like to hear Don's response. Cass |
Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
Since no one really knows whether or not Looking Forward will be doing predictions this year, I figured I’d so some of my own for New Jersey. Just like predictions I’ve done before, Teams will be broken down into various levels with those who are most likely to seed well being locks.
New Jersey seems to have a pretty good assortment of teams, with some Traveling as far from Brazil to compete with us. We are missing a few Regulars though, 11, 1279, 103 (Second year they skipped NJ) and 2753 (No longer an FRC team :( ) so we’ll have to see if these teams are missed. Locks: From everything I’ve gathered thus far, it seems that these 3 teams will make up the top tier in NJ. 25 – They’ve yet to unveil their robot this year, but as posted in another thread, it’s “2007 with a minibot”. For those of you who weren’t around in 2007, 25’s quick and robust robot coupled with good decisions and smart driving made them incredibly difficult to defeat. Assuming 25 fields a Minibot and deployment system that is as effective as their Hostbot, they’ll be just as good as ever. 2016 – The up and coming New Jersey Power House is coming off of a strong season last year and I doubt this year will be any different. Their robot shares a lot of design cues with both their 2010 robot and a certain colorful robot that made it to Einstein in 2007. With some smart driving and a little bit of luck, the Mighty Monkey Wrenches should be in the Finals once again. 816 – Coming off of a relatively good season last year, 816 hopes to finally bring home their first regional banner. They’ve fielded their best robot to date, taking notes from very successful 2007 designs and putting their own spin on it. Just like 25, if they’ve got the Minibot to back up the Hostbot, they should be a formidable opponent on the field. Tips: 1676 – The Pascack Pi-oneers are coming off of one of those seasons that most of us dream about. In 2010 they came home with not one, but two Regional Champion Banners and were the Curie Division Finalists. Their 2011 Machine looks pretty solid and is 1676 is one of the only Machines that I’ve seen with a working Deployment System and Minibot. 1647 – LRR has a fielded another good machine, but this one might be the best they’ve built since 2007. Assuming that they can hold their ground well enough, and play through some defense, there’s no reason that Lenape won’t be playing late Saturday afternoon. 1218 – Vulcan Robotics has had a lot of Success over the last few years, with a Regional Finals Appearance in 2010 and an Einstein Appearance in 2009. If 1218 is up to their Normal Standard, they’ll be a hard team to beat. 102 – The Gearheads always bring a more than Capable Machine to New Jersey and continue to progress from there. Even though I haven’t seen anything from them this year, If history is anything to go by, expect them to start a little slow on Friday Morning and Pick their game up by the time Alliance Selections Roll around. 1089 – Team Mercury seems to have one upped their robot from last year and have built another capable machine. With a little bit of practice, they have the potential to put up quite a few tubes a match. 1860 – Cephatron looks like they’ll be fielding a more than capable machine again this year. Their Decision to go with a Tank Tread System on such and open field has me a baffled but I’m sure they’ll make it work. 1923 – The MidKnight Inventors have proven time and time again that they can build capable robots along with competing like crazy. I haven’t heard much from them this year, but I expect them to be in their usual form. 2344 – Saunders Droid Factory is back for another NJ Regional and I expect them to be just as competitive as ever. Wildcards: 192 – GRT is making the trek from California to compete with us. I don’t believe that many people know much about this team or their robot this year, but if past performance is anything to go on they should at least be a player in the Elimination Matches. 1302 – Team Lionheart had one of those dream years in 2007. They won both the NJ and NY regional’s and led a Championship Alliance to only be knocked out by the Division Winners. Since then, they haven’t been able to attain that level of Dominance again, but if they took their notes from 2007 and applied them to this year’s game, I don’t see why they wouldn’t be competitive. Others: The remainder of teams in the eliminations will probably come from this list: 41, 75, 223, 293, 522, 834, 869, 1155, 1228, 1547, 2180, 2495, 2590, 2729, and 3059. Hints: Like every Week 1 Competition, game play is going to start off slow as teams get into the groove of the game. Penalties are going to be common along with yellow and red cards due to a lack of knowledge of the rules. Don’t be surprised if you see at least one match where more than half of the robots have been carded. In early matches Defense will probably be non-existent as most teams focus on scoring tubes. As tube manipulators break or don’t work as intended we’ll see those teams gradually shift to defense and feeder roles in most matches. By the time eliminations roll around, the Eventual Regional Champions are going to have to fight through some heavy defense if they want to win. Mini Bots and their deployment are going to be HUGE game changers throughout the competition. Don’t be surprised if you see many matches where teams won by just putting their minibot up the pole. “Fast” Minibots will probably be in the mid-two second mark with deployment, but most Minibots will have a total ascent time of 4 or more seconds. That being said, don’t be discouraged if you don’t have a “Fast” minibot. Even last place is worth 10 points. |

Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
We found a problem with our code near the end of the day, and got autonomous working at 9:50 while they were trying to shove us out the door.
The problem that was causing our robot to not move was that we were using the built-in Disabled() function to reset our pistons when we disabled the robot, but since the robot starts off disabled it would attempt to reset the pistons...which never got a chance to be declared. We'd get an error, and lose all comms while the cRIO crashed and reset itself. The next time we enabled the robot, the code would work because everything was declared. This problem has been plaguing us for a long time now, I'm so glad we fixed it. You guys are up for a surprise tomorrow, I think. I have high hopes for my team. Good luck! Steve, 1647 software "thing" |
Re: 2011 New Jersey Regional
So I walked in this morning with 2 other team members for the setup. We get to our pit and start unpacking things. I tell one to get the power cord out, and I turn around to do something. Then I start to hear a hissing noise. Turn around, and there's the kid watching a thick cloud of fire extinguisher smoke exploding out of our toolbox. After that our tools looked like they went through a nuclear holocaust.
Probably the best thing I'll ever remember from any competition, we laughed about it all day. |

If you have a good ground loader all you are doing is making it easier for you to score. There are 18 tubes per alliance, enough to fill each alliances respective rack. I think it is a waste of time going back and forth across the field when you can have your human player throw the tube to you. There are 18 tubes, and no rollover between matches. 1. Many of the human players can not throw across the field accuratly and consistently. 2. In addition to 1 human players have trouble throwing sometimes to even the middle of the field playing right to the other alliance. I am confussed by all this throw throw throw.
