Don't worry - most people outside of Indiana didn't know you previously DIDN'T observe daylight savings time. :)

This will not be an easy decision making process for the IRI organizing committee, there will definitely be some high performing teams left out.

This list makes me nervous, and glad we haven't booked rooms yet.

So, this means that the entire field of 12 Einstein teams at the FIRST Championships have applied are are willing to compete at IRI.

I don't mean to be obnoxious or anything, but I'm not seeing evidence that 973 applied... Wouldn't that bring us back to 11 Einstein teams?

From talking to them, they applied over the weekend but after the website stopped taking applications earlier than it was supposed to. That may be why they don't show up.

Does that mean that Indiana has officialy given up on the northwest corner of the state? Are we no longer welcome to call ourselves "Hoosiers" ?? :p

(For those that don't know, NWI and I also believe the Southwest corner observe central daylight time due to their proximities to other large municipalities).

Good Point. Though the majority of the state, including where IRI is held, is now on Eastern time.

But it is daylight saving time, right? It's just CDT, not EDT.

Other than last year's IRI champions, nobody is explicitly guaranteed an invitation to compete. I'm pretty confident that the "what does this team bring to IRI" factor will put the host teams high enough on the pile to make the list, though.

With the number of teams increasing in Indiana every year that would be unsustainable.

We have a new announcement, and this one trumps Fultz's words above. This change of timing will be the start of a new, fun thing.

Get your popcorn ready. The IRI invite list will be coming out 8 hours later than originally planned. We are happy to announce that Mike and Justin will be broadcasting the IRI invite list through their popular FRC Top 25 webcast. The webcast will begin at 8:00 Eastern time, Wednesday night (May 18th).

So, gather your teams together at 8:00 Eastern time and watch Mike and Justin's webcast to see which teams are invited to IRI this year.

There will be 70 teams invited. Of these 70, we are planning for 2-4 teams that decide they cannot make the trip, so we will end up with approximately 66-68 teams. There will be no wait list. The selection committee focused on robot performance, on the competition field, more than any year prior. However, we still had other factors weighing decisions. We hope that the resulting list of teams brings together the best assembly of top-performing FIRST Robotics Competition teams that ever has been on the same field.

Sincerely,
Chris Fultz
and
Andy Baker

ps. After Mike and Justin's webcast, the invite list will be posted on this thread and the IRI website, and teams will be sent more information with an email.

Yes, Eastern time and Exton Pa and sunset moments are all magical times. The sun descends, and shines through the current day pollutants, to put a purple/orange glow on Exton.

Which is why going to IRI is a bonus, only the rich orange and burnt umber rays of a closing day warm the ground, making you think all is right with the worlds.

Re: 2011 IRI

In case anyone was wondering just how good this field is, here is everyone's highest finish. Several teams have multiple instances...

IRI stats:
12/12 divisional champs
6 division finalists
12 division semifinalists
16 division quarterfinalists
14 championship attendees
10 non championship attendees

of the 14 championship attendees that did not play in elims:
6 won a regional
3 were a regional finalist
3 were a regional semifinalist
2 were a regional quarterfinalist

of the 10 non championship attendees:
5 were a regional finalist
5 were a regional semifinalist

Now for a little bit about the teams that are left on the sidelines...

Of the teams that were NOT accepted:
16 attended the championship
31 did not attend the championship

Of the 16 championship attendees:
1 division quaterfinalist (this is us unfortunately :( )
1 won a district
1 was a regional finalist
5 were a district or regional semifinalist
8 were a district or regional quarterfinalist

Of the 31 non championship attendees:
2 won a district
7 were a district or regional finalist
11 were a district or regional semifinalist
7 were a district or regional quarterfinalist
4 never played in elims

As a mentor I try to think things through before acting. Let's try thinking it through here:

Each mentor starts with a minibot in their hands and in their lanes. They must cross the field (past an opposing mentor) and deploy their minibot on to the pole.
No problem, our minibot snaps on the pole and you pull the pin/lanyard and off it goes.

The third mentors start back to back in the center and attempt to stop the other alliance from scoring.
Ok, need to dodge an opposing mentor on a 50/50 chance basis.

Thinking back to 2004 Dean Simmons and the Kamens' IRI mosh pit (shhh those aren't allowed any more).

How does one go about donating something to the silent auction? Team 1114 has something relatively special we're thinking of donating. Hopefully it can raise some decent money for the IRI charities.

Are you taking pre-bids? If so I got $50 down for the "spend a evening with karthik" auction

I checked the website but didn't find any info on how to submit a donation. Maybe I overlooked it. In the past, I've sent Chris Fultz a private message and that has done the trick.

Whatever 1114 donates will be awesome - I hope it brings lots of money to the charities selected.

Also interested in the details on donating (and/or what 1114 is planning...)

Re: 2011 IRI

Pretty simple.

Just bring the item to the event and let me know it is there and it is for the auction. We will make the sign up sheets for each item as we place them out on Friday morning.

If you are not coming to the IRI but have something to donate, send me a PM and I can get the details.

We have added a bunch of new info to the IRI web page. Now there is much more information regarding the silent auction, mentor dinner, mentor matches, and talent show. Check out these pages below for more information:
  • IRI Talent Show: show your stuff in front of your peers at IRI!
  • Mentor Mini-Bot Madness: sign up your favorite mentor to compete with your team's mini-bot
  • Mentor Dinner: mentors get a chance to network while eating dinner on the FRC field. Want more lemonade? Send up a mini-bot.
  • Silent Auction: do you have something to donate to the silent auction? Get more information here.

Please let us know if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
Andy Baker

There are some team changes and we will post an update on Monday morning (11 July).

Pits will be about 10' x 10'. Lots of space!

Well its not really team changes its just teams dropped, because you guys said that it was going to be a smaller amount of teams and would just get to that amount by picking a solid number of teams and waiting for the statistical amount to drop out, right?

Hey Everybody!

I just wanted to let you know that students from Michigan Tech's Robotics System Enterprise plan to be at IRI this year. Several of them are traveling and helping out their high school teams, but they'll be wearing name tags and have some information for you if you plan on attending Michigan Tech in the futures. If you have any questions about the program or MTU in general, please feel free to approach them!

I currently plan to attend the IRI this year. Last time I went, I got there and didn't really plan properly to meet everyone. If anyone wants me to try to find them and say hi in person, PM me and I'll do my best to find each of you. I'll only be able to go on Saturday though so thats the only time I'll be able to talk. Depending on how many people I'm looking for, will decide how long I'm available to talk to each one. Last time I was able to have a good conversation with Jane and Billfred as well as several others here. I hope to meet many others I respect here this time around.

Re: 2011 IRI

What: 2011 Non-Engineering Mentors Meeting at IRI!
When: Saturday, July 23, following Opening Ceremonies
Where: Listen to announcements for more details

Last year's meeting was very fun, high energy and informative for everyone! It had some great results too, with a few attendees holding meetings in their own areas. With the additional help of Renee (LadyLogistics) and Libby (LibbyK) our 2011 meeting is going to be even better.

This meeting is open to all mentors who are interested in networking in order to help each other with any Non-Engineering tasks on our teams (like Chairman's and other award submissions, marketing, funding issues, spirit, travel planning, food/meals planning, etc.) If possible, make sure to send a representative from your team, even if you do not have a Non-Engineering Mentor. Afterall, managing a FIRST team involves a lot more than designing and building the robot. So come to the NEMO meeting! Bring your questions, pens to take notes and business cards for easy information exchange.

My favorite improvement: we'll have a sign-in via laptop this year, so I won't have to try and decipher everyone's handwriting and miss people on the email listing!

Haha. You're quick on the draw, Brendan!

But yes, Team 1114 has decided to donate a fully powdercoated spare elevator from Simbot Steve to the IRI Silent Auction. We're hoping this mechanism will draw some interest and help raise funds for the IRI family of charities.

Here are some pictures for those of you aren't familiar with it:

If you're interested, be sure to place a bid. Also make sure to check out the items up for bid, IRI always has some good stuff available. We once got a life sized Oscar the Grouch doll!

COTS-a “Commercial, Off-The-Shelf” COMPONENT or MECHANISM, in its unaltered, unmodified
state. A COTS item must be a standard (i.e. not custom order) part commonly available from the
VENDOR, available from a non-team source, and available to all teams for purchase.

Emphasis mine

Although you could make the argument that IRI is non-team. That could be scary with 910's robot in a future year with 1114's lift. :yikes:

Well I know one year, they offered some sweet Baker/Coors autographed AndyMark sprockets, and then the person who won those brought them back for next year's auction, mounted all nice inside a frame. I currently know this because I have this hanging on my wall at home. So you never know what will be available!

At the MARC this year we used #omgMARC to go along with #omgRobots! A couple of us were thinking of using #omgIRI but if there was one last year, it would be better to keep it consistent.

Yeah, there is an IRI twitter already: it is @2011IRI

Just wondering about a hashtag for people who mention happenings about IRI.
If no one has any objections, let's just go with #omgIRI
