CD Christmas Cards 2010

After a year of lapse, Michelle Celio has passed the CD Christmas Card torch onto me. Which means that it's time to sign up for CD Christmas Cards!

A book of stamps is currently: $8.80 (up 40 cents form two years ago)

Since it takes two stamps to mail to Canada, Canadians please make sure to sign up for 2 spots.

We'll limit this one, as in past years, to 40 sign-ups, so this way no one is spending more than $18 in stamps (unless you're Canadian, which it looks to be around $38 CAD if all sign ups are to America)

The deadline is going to be Friday, December 3, 2010. This means that you must have PM'd me your address before 11:59pm on 12/3. I will send out a reminder PM on 12/1 if you have signed up but have not sent me your address, but it will make both of our lives easier if you just send it as soon as you sign up.

Obviously, we can't track you down and force you to send cards--but try to avoid being a spoilsport.

And yes, this means the other folks involved will get a physical address (via PM), so check with the parents as applicable.

So, if you're in for this year, add your name to the list and PM me your address (be sure to include special instructions if you're a college student who will be leaving campus and you want your cards to be sent to a different address after certain date)

To see who was in on the fun last time check out 2008 thread. ( and also 2007, 2006, 2005, 2004)

Usually Christmas cards, but if you can type out 40 letters... =P

At the deadline listed in the original post, you will receive a PM with a list of addresses.

Correct. Send some kind of greeting, whether it be a card or a letter or a carrier pigeon (I would personally love to get a carrier pigeon with a message for Christmas, but not all of us can afford that many pigeons) or something of your choice. I sent out "fortune fish" with my cards two years ago because I had a million of them, and a lot of people seemed to like them.

I would like to sign-up. But, will we be told who is celebrating which holiday so that we know what to send? I'm sure no one would be offended if they got a card for a different holiday/religion but it still seems proper to know what to send to who.

Well...if anyone wants to let me know if they're celebrating something other than Christmas (which is usually the standard), you could PM me and I can add something under your address. I can't guarantee that you'll get a card for your preferred holiday, though.

(In 2008, I believe that just sent out "happy holidays" cards. Always a safe bet.)

JaneYoung 26-11-2010 12:00

Re: CD Christmas Cards 2010

It seems that those who participate in sending cards, find ways to convey holiday wishes without being offensive to anyone. Take a chance - don't let the concern that you might offend someone stop you from enjoying this opportunity or try to put too many restrictions on it.

Judging by the name of the subject, I don't think anyone signing up should be offended by Christmas cards, even if they don't celebrate Christmas. Now if this were changed to the "CD Holiday Cards" next year, then you'd have a case... ;)

But for the most part, you can assume everyone will be OK with Christmas cards.

Just 4 more days to sign up to send and receive cards!

For those who have signed up: Thank you! PLEASE PM me your address if you haven't already! Also, don't forget to go out and get your stamps!

For those who have been considering signing up, but has been a little on the line about it: I strongly suggest doing this. Sending out the cards is not time-consuming unless you make it so. $8.80 and an hour or two of your time is definitely worth the joy you will feel when you see the first card in your mailbox.

Today is the LAST day to sign up for cards! I forgot to send out a reminder PM yesterday to the few who have not sent in their addresses, so I just did that a few minutes ago. Hopefully I'll get those by the end of the night.

If you have friends who might be interested, please spread the word and get them to post tonight!

Edit: Okay, maybe I got my dates mixed up. Today is the second to last day, but you get the implied urgency and begging.

Eh heh...so a few Facebook friends have reported that those envelopes have arrived at their destinations in rather rough shape. If yours arrived in poor shape, I'm sorry!

My inner engineer would love to figure out the root cause of this problem, and 21 cards going all over the country should be a good set of data. I mailed all of these in one batch from a local post office, where I paid the First Class Nonmachineable rate (as its contents couldn't flow through standard machinery). Only one of these was stamped Do Not Bend in my presence by the clerk, who promised to stamp the others later. (This same clerk was none too thrilled to have to manually print postage for 21 letters, as the US Postal Service apparently doesn't make a 64-cent stamp.)

If yours arrived rough, would you mind snapping a picture and emailing it to me? My email address is william@[My CD username]Industries.com.

Thanks!

Michigan is completely shut down unless you live just north of Detroit <mumblemumblenosnowdaysmumblemumble>. Hopefully everything will get back to normal over the next few days! I know that the postal workers are still delivering, but I imagine that transportation from one office to the next is going painfully slowly.

I was going to finish mine tonight and get them sent out tomorrow, but I apparently have no envelopes o.O I'll be sending mine off Thursday morning on my way to school.

I could not find out what this one battered letter was that came in the mail yesterday. Just today I was talking with a few kids on our team about the Christmas cards. Yours was quite destroyed with a little card that said happy Festivus. Haha.

Sounds like the state that it arrived in here. Still, it was neat getting a little Festivus card, and the card itself is still intact, so I'll be going about improvising myself a little pole now :D

I've got my cards, but I need stamps yet, so I might not have them out until Saturday, what with having to deal with final exams the next couple days, but we'll see. I might end up snowed into my house too, in which case it might be a little later, but hopefully it doesn't come to that

Thanks!

I received yours Billfred.... and it looks like they just ripped open the envelope. This isn't the first I've had issues getting some in the mail though. I took pictures though and will send them your way. The only stamp visible on mine is 'non-machinable' (very faintly) on front, twice. It made me most sad. The only thing left in the envelope was the tiny 'Happy Festivus' card.

Re: CD Christmas Cards 2010

My Billfred card envelope was ripped in half, had my address, a Columbia, SC stamp on it, and a stamp from the local post office saying it was received in its current condition. It also said 'non-machineable' on it. I'll get a pic out tonight if I can remember to. No card inside, but now Bill has me quite attentively wondering what it was inside that clawed its way out?

My cards should go out tomorrow morning.

Re: CD Christmas Cards 2010

Hmmm, Billfred is pretty clever...

Could he be preparing a damaged mail picture collage in the shape of a Christmas tree for all of us? And the Happy Festivus cards are to be used as ornaments? Maybe that truly is the gift he will be giving us. ;)

Billfred = genius

Re: CD Christmas Cards 2010

I received Billfred's card/envelope a few days ago. Everything made it except for a few tears in the envelope which could have allowed the pole to escape. Happily, it didn't. Here is a photo of my Festivus pole. I like it because it is totally nerdy and because it is small. (It may end up with one of my Nativity sets. :))

Thank you, Billfred! I've also received a card from Kelli. Mine should be going out by the weekend.

Re: CD Christmas Cards 2010

Here is a story for you all!

So this destroyed, miniature letter with an unreadable name, and a barley readable Happy Festivus on it came in the mail. I had no idea who it was from (because I could not read the name). So I looked up the address and an apartment near the university of SC came up. It was also the home to a tattoo parlor, whose number was on Google. I called the parlor and asked if they had sent a letter, and they said it was probably the college kids upstairs (Which I assumed prior to calling them). I thought, who would send me a battered letter like this in the mail from USC? I then had a brain blast and thought, it must be someone from the CD Christmas card list! Sure enough, it was!

Thank you very much, Billfred, for the most interesting Holiday card I have ever received! :D

As far as I know, I've only gotten Billfred's and Kelli Treff's cards. Oh, and I think Jane's as well. (Or maybe I'm imagining things.) But since I'm visiting family, it will be nice to come home to a bunch of cards! ^_^

I got yours! It was so spiffy. Definitely one of my favorites so far.

I've gotten cards from Candace, Mike (I assume it's his - I can make out an "M" and a "T" and "1529" of the signature), Vic, Carolyn, Dinsmoor, Kelli Treff, and Rsisk.

Still no sign of Billfred's yet. If I don't get it by the end of the week, I'll assume that it got lost in the mail or that the address became unreadable ;P

Yours got returned to me, marked "VACANT - UNABLE TO FORWARD" on a yellow USPS label like they use when mail does get forwarded.

Kelli's also got returned to me, but the return to sender stamp on the envelope doesn't have one of the half-dozen reasons checked. (And the stamp job is so poor that I couldn't decipher any of the reasons either way.) Both addresses jive with what went out on the list.

If you can't be a shining example, you have to be a horrible warning. :)

Stupid post office.

The address I gave is where I am moving too and it's not vacant!

Oh well.

If an IndySam card gets returned then we should have a meetup at CMP and all give our cards to him there. Win Win Win. We all go to CMP, we get to meet each other, and IndySam gets a special delivery

And if not, we should all send IndySam's cards with someone going to CMP so he still gets the special delivery.

We would have loved to have you! I'm starting to think that next year, this shouldn't be posted in Chit-Chat. We probably missed out on a few people because they've eliminated the Chit-Chat forum from their Recent Activity feed in the portal. Any opinions?

We could always ask the CD guys to post it on the front page with all of the main news, just like where The New Cool book is posted now. I am sure they would be more than willing to post it there!

This is just an .02...
I would be very careful about moving it out of Chit-Chat.

If you are considering moving it into 'General', it would be my suggestion to write Mr. Martus or Brandon a private message and ask their opinion, Kara. It definitely could not be called Christmas Cards, I don't think.

Just a thought.

This has been fun this year. I'm enjoying all of the great cards.

I've put mine in the mail. The post office was mayhem with a lot of grumpy people frowning. I paid no attention and continued humming Rudolph. Tomorrow I have to go back and I'm going to wear my antlers. Please feel free to add duct tape to mine if anything falls off. Speaking of tape, did anyone else notice the masking tape on Kara's envelope? That made me laugh.

I wanted to seal the envelopes with stickers like I did in 2008...but alas, I didn't have enough fun stickers for this year. I also couldn't find my scotch tape at the time ;) I'm glad you liked the masking tape!

One of mine came in with a nice little tear half-way from the top-right corner to the middle. And they wonder why people prefer electronic communication a majority of the year...

Absolutely! A lot of planning went into this, believe it or not. We had about 12 fake Christmas presents, hats, bows, you name it Christmas. But, luckily, it only took about 4 takes total, including that kid, Robbie, singing. :p

Kara, just wanted to say that I got your card in another envelope similar to Billfred's, except this one was actually an envelope instead of a plastic bag, with a good sized chunk of your envelope missing. That's very strange. I haven't heard that from anyone else (if that were to happen, I'd have expected it to be to Michelle - hers got coated in the glob of glitter glue that remained on my desk). I don't know how to go about complaining to the postal service, but you get another in that state, you might want to consider it...
