2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
I want to welcome teams coming to the inaugural FRC Regional here in San Antonio, Texas. The event will be in our historic downtown in the Herny B. Gonzales Convention Center with access to the famous River Walk. There are plenty of affordable hotels downtown and the venue is walking distance to the River Center Mall with the requisite food court.
Of the currently registered teams, there is a decent mix of rookie, young and veteran teams. If a few more vets move off the waitlist that mix will get just a bit better. 19 Rookie Teams 8 Sophomore Teams 18 3rd year Veterans 15 Multi-year Veterans 60 Total Team Count It is just amazing the effort that has been put forth by many volunteers and funds from many new sponsors to take Texas from something around 35 teams and one event four years ago to the current 145 and now three events. San Antonio itself has gone from just 3 teams for about 7 years to now 16 this year. Looking forward to having a great dual event with a FTC Championship on Thursday and FRC match play on Friday and Saturday. |

That is March 3-5.

Hopefully we get to see each other in March but that waitlist just keeps waiting ! |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
It has been a patience trying year for all Texas teams as the unknowns of developing all of the new rookies has meant holding back on waitlists to ensure that they have a place to play in Texas as required by a couple of the grants. I have no specific insights as to when/if waitlists will clear but we've seen a lot of movement on the Alamo list at the end of last week and this week now. It will be great to see you and the DiscoBots play here in SA.

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
I can't wait to see all the great teams coming to the Alamo Regional. It will be fun competing as 457 again. Good luck to all the teams that are coming and hope you enjoy San Antonio!!!!!!!

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
1477 is looking forward to being there.
|
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
1429 is excited about attending this inaugural event.
What a great way to start the year off by competing with teams like 148 and 1477. And a big welcome back to Texas to team 16. It's been a while since we have had a chance to play with the Bomb Squad. :) This should be a lot of fun playing with a former World Champion, and a Chairman's Award winner. Good luck to all teams competing! |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Quite an interesting feeling this season brings as I am involved in hosting a FRC event for the first time. Kind of like having family over for the holidays for the first time in your own house.
Several have posted how great it will be to have several seasoned veterans with proven records of success coming to San Antonio. I'll echo those comments plus add that there are several more not yet mentioned. We might see one or two more move off the waitlist in the coming weeks. I will put out the call that any of the veteran teams that also have experienced tournament volunteers also consider signing up for key spots at the event. Jess J. is our assistant RD and volunteer coordinator. She is doing her normal great job and are lucky to have her in Austin, Texas bringing some of that Pittsburg FIRST experience with her. To those of you who have already volunteered, thanks. Another big need will be mentoring assistance for the 20 something rookies. I know that 16 is coming down to help the three new rookies from Arkansas and 245 is coming down in support of thier tele-mentoring job with a GM team in Mexico. So those teams that can, bring your extra hands and hopefully your robot will be in good competition form so that the Texas friendly experience that is FIRST in Texas can be established here at the Alamo event. Our personal standard is to live up to the team friendly event status that the Lone Star:cool: has become a gold standard while also getting off to a solid start as a new event as Dallas :D has done in the last two years. |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Quick historical note Texas came form the Caddo Indian word teysha witch means friend. Also on another note I have also herd in addition to 148, 1477, 16, 245 and 1429. 2158 ausTIN CANs and 2468 Westlake robotics( also known as team appreciate) will be coming down from Austin to compete. It looks like this will be a great regional. Also hopefully 2587 will come down to compete!

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
3103 is really excited, this is our first year competing out of town and Alamo gave us the perfect opportunity!

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
2415's flying in from Georgia :) Looking forward to meeting new people in Texas!

This also includes the Adambots from Michigan, and rookie teams Campus San Luis from Michigan, and the Jaguars from Arkansas. Oh yea, there is also this HOF team from Mountain Home Arkansas. Welcome back Bomb Squad! :) |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
I am so looking forward to coming to San Antonio to help out. The wife and I are flying in from California to help with judging. Haven't been to San Antonio since Air Force basic training, I think a robot competition is going to be much more fun :)

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
San Antonio is shaping up to be a great first year event !
This intensity will really start to build when 16, 118 and 148 release their robot videos! In the meantime, the DiscoBots will keep you in suspense with our testing videos ! Scoring our first tube ! http://vimeo.com/19829101 |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
I always look forward to teaser videos as a preview of what to see at events.
Word is that the tandem that is AndyMark will be at the Alamo event at Robot Inspectors. The local planning committee is very grateful to these and other veteran FRC folks who are coming down to help make this event a smoothly run and successful event.:] :] :] |

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Robots get bagged today for San Antonio.
Since this is everyone's first event of the season lets make scouting a bit easier. I would love to see pictures or even better videos of every robot that is going to be at the inaugural Alamo Regional. To start it off, if you haven't seen it yet, here is the DiscoSlide from 2587. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=91840 We should have an updated video from our final driver practice uploaded some time soon. |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Is anyone planning to webcast this event?
|
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
I don't know the details but I believe Team 2468 is planning to webcast Alamo.
|
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
OK, I won't be in Texas next weekend, but would love to watch it.
As of right now there is no one listed as webcasting this event: http://robotics.arc.nasa.gov/events/...rcwebcasts.php |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Safe travels to San Antonio! The weather is beautiful and will, hopefully, stay this way.
According to Andrew's post here, there is going to be a webcast. Jane |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Looking forward to the matches later today. Team 2415 the WiredCats from Atlanta are there, so of course I hope they do well. Thanks for the webcast info. Dave

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Favorite things at the Alamo Regional so far:
The very happy conga line that formed around the outside perimeter of the field this morning - before my first cup of coffee. The Q button that the Wranglers are sporting to celebrate their 'new' coach. The duct tape robot giveaways that 922 is handing out. They are so silly. The eagle mascot and its handlers. Amazing and fun/funny/cute/awesome. Meeting new people who have traveled to the regional to help celebrate its inaugural competition. A small alligator sticking through a wooden slat and holding a toy soccer ball in its mouth. An occasional chair. Good luck tomorrow, teams. Jane |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
I've been watching regionals from the webcasts, primarily Alamo. Just curious if anybody knows what happened to 118 in their earlier matches. One match, I saw them scoring exclusively on the low pegs. I'm sure they were just having a lift issue, just wondering if anybody knew why.
I must say all of these high-caliber teams are always fun to watch. 16, 118, 148, 1477... I really hope we will see a second ubertube up by 148, crossing my fingers for it. :D |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
The feed seems to be getting increasingly choppy, no?

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Team 148 was amazing! They scored their ubertubes, went back, picked up their partner's ubertube and scored it in two matches that I saw! Hat's off to their programmers. Their four bar arm hangs with ease and their minibot deploys and climbs in what looked like around two seconds. I see them going far in St. Louis.
|
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Team 148's Robot is the best robot I've seen in the regionals I watched (Alamo, FLR, Granite). If 118 had a more reliable deployment system, they would probably be just as good.

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
FYI - teams/folks traveling northbound on I-35, check out the exchange on Ben White and 35 as you come into Austin. That is closed for road work all weekend and is a major headache. If you can, find a way around the exchange several exits before.

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
That was one great regional, I want to thank all the volunteers who helped work the event and all the teams that made it such a memorable experience. I think I can speak for all the teams that got to attend, "I can't wait till next year".
Also congratulations to Team 57 for winning the Chairman's Award, you guys have done so much to support Robotics programs in Texas and this was very much deserved. |

I would like to extend a very special congratulations to Team 3478, the LamBots. I've never seen a team so happy to be at a competition and win an award. To see them win the Rookie All Star Award after helping mentor and assist them during the build season was the most rewarding experience for me at the Alamo Regional. |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Thanks to all and sundry for a really great regional. I'm kinda sorry I missed the first day of it. Things ran extremely smoothly for a rookie event, which attests to the dedication and expertise of all the volunteers running it.
Congrats to the winning alliance of 16-148-3481. We all knew what the regional finalists were in for in those final matches, but we're still glad we had a shot at it. Congrats also to 3103 on their Engineering Inspiration award. Looks like those joint workshops paid off all around. Huge thanks to our partners 2848 and 245. We obviously think you made a brilliant third pick and we're glad it worked out so well for you. We left it all on the field and that's all you can do. |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Any chance somebody could help me out with the team number for the Woodie Flowers Award winner Robert Shoemaker?

They did something else very special. As the Alamo was ending and Mark Leon was wrapping it up, they started shouting, "We Love You" to Mark. They do. Mark was a big part of Lone Star Regional for a long time and it was great to have him back helping the Alamo to lift off successfully. Jane |
Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
I can see to have the essay up by tomorrow :) we are proud and hoping to present him the award this week. He couldnt make it saturday due to his health.

Re: 2011 Alamo - Inaugural Event
Thanks to 118 for picking us for the #3 alliance, we had a good run. Hope to see you guys at championships! Also, thanks to 2745 for their assistance in the alliance. It was a good regional, hope to come back again.
