School Size vs. Team Size

Hey everyone,

After getting into a bit of a discussion about the size of teams and the size of the school they are from, I decided to create this thread. This is a much better place to discuss team sizes. I wanted to see the variation in these stats, and I figured this would be the easiest way to do it.

So my questions are:

1. How many students are on your team?
and
2. How many total students are in your school (Preferably grades 9-12)?

Any other discussion about team size and school size is welcomed also.

For team 103, we are a team of about 30 students in a school of about 750 (Grades 9-12).

We're 30-35 students in a 3000 student body. Probably a bit below average on the percentage there, but we're not too worried about it.

Edit: That's 1% to 1.17%

I think it would be interesting to also comment on the area the school is in, and post the percentage of the school on the team.

Ours is primarily lower-middle class, and somewhat agricultural.

14 students of 1649, .85%

Aquidneck Island Robotics (AIR) 4-H club
7 FLL teams
2 FTC teams
FRC Team 78, AIR Strike

We are the largest 4-H club in RI and will take anyone willing to drive where we work. The 100+ kids in AIR come from 30+ schools in roughly a 20-25 mile radius from Newport, RI, and include home school kids, and public and private high schools. There are over 60 active volunteers, mentors, and parents helping out all ten teams. We have no teachers in the club who are associated with any of the schools.

For FRC this year, on my roster there are ~35 kids from 10+ middle and high schools and ~30 adult volunteers.

1189 draws from the two high schools in the district, so the total student body is around 3000. Taking both schools into consideration, we would probably be a pretty average middle class district with a very high emphasis on athletics.

Um, I suppose for 1261, it's more interesting to look at data spanning two seasons.

In 2010:
Members: ~20
Mentors:~5
Student Body: ~3500

This season so far:
Members: ~50
Mentors:~5 + About 5-10 parents that have helped out.
Student Body: ~3500

It'll be interesting to see how many of these kids maintain interest and carry on their determination and hardwork into the FRC season. Many of them stayed on because they were working with a small group in VRC, but they'll be in for a bit of a learning curve when the team goes into FRC.

Your team is your team. You get from it what you put into it.

Our school is one of the more smaller rural schools in HI, roughly 1 to 1 1/2 hours away from Honolulu, depending on traffic.
We are grades 7-12 with just under 600 students.
Its VERY difficult to get kids into our STEM/robotics program, but we manage to get about 25 kids/year. Being in a plantation community, most of the general population students love computer classes since most of them are technology starved at home with no internet access. Seriously.

We always get students every year who's first time on a plane is for a mainland robotics trip.:ahh:

As I like to say, "It's not what you do it with, it's what you do with it."

I completely understand where you are coming from. I agree that it is not healthy to make your team more like other teams based on what is, "Most common," or even compare your team to other teams.

The only reason I created this thread was to see the diversity in the FIRST community. It was not to compare our team to other teams, it was really just to see what was out there, because I literally had no idea what was really out there.

Thank you very much for your concern, and we will be sure to use this information more for extending our knowledge of FIRST rather than the betterment of our own team.

Re: School Size vs. Team Size

Team 2729 (Storm Robotics)
Schools: Lenape and Cherokee High Schools
Number of Students in Schools: about 4500 (two schools)
Number of Students on Team: between 65 and 75 (we branched off and started and FTC team this year which has 20-25 additional students)
Number of Mentors: 15-20 (who are amazing!!)
Number of Active Parents: I honestly don't know...we started a parent-run Boosters Club this year, and I think there are at least 10 parents in it!

So we don't have an overwhelmingly large percentage of students in our schools on our team, but we have a the perfect amount of students and mentors to get stuff done without being overcrowded!

It has something to do with your offensive contribution to your alliance. This database shows the OPR for the 2010 season. I remember Karthik describing it really well one time, but I forget where. Check it out in this scouting database.

For Saints Robotics 1899:
Students: 60
Mentors: 4
School Population: 1341
4.5% student involvement

(2009-2010 numbers)

We don't have a huge problem with student involvement, but we could definitely use a more supportive parent network and mentor base.

Jeff! I saw this thread and wanted to impress everybody by telling the people how gigantic our school was! You beat me to it!
Anyway, those numbers are smaller than reality. 862's actual numbers are:
  • Team size: 72 students, 18 mentors as of last year. This year's information is not fully tallied yet.
  • school size: 6536 on Count Day (a Michigan thing), all on one campus.
After looking at the data, I have noticed a trend:
  • As the size of a school increases, the size of the team increases. (obvious)
  • The size of the team increases at a slower proportional rate than the size of the school;
  • Therefore, as the size of a school increases, the percentage of the school population on the team decreases.
Perhaps this is due to the availability of other activities. However, another possible reason is that the primary way people become involved in these activities is by association. When there are more people to associate with, less association occurs with any particular person. Simplistically, people are less likely to join the robotics team because fewer of their good friends are on the team.

Team 461
West Side High School
700 people
50 people on Robotics
aprox. 7% of the school
8-10 mentors

We seem to be a little heavy on nerds...

AS THINGS STAND NOW

Team size: 10 students
Team-that-actually-does-or-tries-to-do-something Size: 5 students

Mentors: 5
Consistent Mentors: 2

School Population: 2400 students

Student Population Involvement Percentage: 0.42%
Student Population Genuine Involvement Percentage: 0.21%

Needless to say, the team could use some more interested people.

Hello Everyone,

Team 610 has:

Students: ~50
Mentors/Coaches: 4-6
Total Students at School (9-12): ~350

Around 14% of the student body is committed to the FRC team.
