School Size vs. Team Size
Hey everyone,
After getting into a bit of a discussion about the size of teams and the size of the school they are from, I decided to create this thread. This is a much better place to discuss team sizes. I wanted to see the variation in these stats, and I figured this would be the easiest way to do it. So my questions are: 1. How many students are on your team? and 2. How many total students are in your school (Preferably grades 9-12)? Any other discussion about team size and school size is welcomed also. For team 103, we are a team of about 30 students in a school of about 750 (Grades 9-12). |

Students: 15-50 depending how you count. Student Body: ~700 |
Re: School Size vs. Team Size
We're 30-35 students in a 3000 student body. Probably a bit below average on the percentage there, but we're not too worried about it.
Edit: That's 1% to 1.17% |

Re: School Size vs. Team Size
2022:
Team size: 30 very dedicated, 50 total students School Size: 600-650 We go to a Science and Math academy, so our percentages should be higher than average. |
Re: School Size vs. Team Size
I think it would be interesting to also comment on the area the school is in, and post the percentage of the school on the team.
Ours is primarily lower-middle class, and somewhat agricultural. 14 students of 1649, .85% |
Re: School Size vs. Team Size
wow, looking at the posts so far my high school was pretty big! (I graduated last year, so my numbers might be a little off, but based on previous years this is what our team generally is)
Team Size: usually 20-30 students Mentors: 4 School Coaches/Mentors: 2 Involved Parents: 5-6 Total Students in the School: ~4000 |
Re: School Size vs. Team Size
Team of about 60 students, maybe 30 mentors and parents, school of 3500ish, with the 9th graders in a separate building (obviously I'm not too sure on any of these numbers :P)

Students from any school (6) in district including home schooled: enrollment 12,353 in 2010, two schools participate in Battlebots IQ exclusively. Excellent information base! Its very interesting to see these stats. We have 2 teachers, and about 5 or 6 mentors along with 10 or so active parents. So, a solid team at that.

Aquidneck Island Robotics (AIR) 4-H club
7 FLL teams 2 FTC teams FRC Team 78, AIR Strike We are the largest 4-H club in RI and will take anyone willing to drive where we work. The 100+ kids in AIR come from 30+ schools in roughly a 20-25 mile radius from Newport, RI, and include home school kids, and public and private high schools. There are over 60 active volunteers, mentors, and parents helping out all ten teams. We have no teachers in the club who are associated with any of the schools. For FRC this year, on my roster there are ~35 kids from 10+ middle and high schools and ~30 adult volunteers. |
Re: School Size vs. Team Size
for 294 we have about 30-35 students, with most from a school of 2000ish and about 3 of the 30 from a separate high school, obviously were trying to do a little recruiting
|
Re: School Size vs. Team Size
1189 draws from the two high schools in the district, so the total student body is around 3000. Taking both schools into consideration, we would probably be a pretty average middle class district with a very high emphasis on athletics.

Most of the nearby public schools have FRC teams as well. We are considered to be in Auburn Hills, because we were originally from Avondale high school (Auburn Hills, the yellow jackets) and are located at the Chrysler Tech Center, in Auburn Hills. We are in a very FRC team-dense area. According to OPR data, we are ranked 11th in the world. However, we are ranked 3rd in our county (behind teams 67 and 469) |

However, we have a very diverse group of students in both skin color, socio-economic status, and educational background on our team. |
Re: School Size vs. Team Size
Um, I suppose for 1261, it's more interesting to look at data spanning two seasons.
In 2010: Members: ~20 Mentors:~5 Student Body: ~3500 This season so far: Members: ~50 Mentors:~5 + About 5-10 parents that have helped out. Student Body: ~3500 It'll be interesting to see how many of these kids maintain interest and carry on their determination and hardwork into the FRC season. Many of them stayed on because they were working with a small group in VRC, but they'll be in for a bit of a learning curve when the team goes into FRC. - Sunny |

Re: School Size vs. Team Size
I by no means want to side track this thread, so if you would like, please disregard my comments.
OK, now that I've qualified my remarks, here we go. If the crux of the original conversation was strictly for statistical purposes, then great! But, if you are trying to measure how your team stands comparing it to other teams, then I suggest you stop comparing. It is not good for you, your team or the FIRST community. Your team is your team. You get from it what you put into it. As I like to say, "It's not what you do it with, it's what you do with it." Now for the numbers: 25-35 students. 1 Advisor. 2 Engineering Mentors. 3 Alumni/College student Mentors. 7-10 involved parents. ~1500 student body. |

Re: School Size vs. Team Size
Our school is one of the more smaller rural schools in HI, roughly 1 to 1 1/2 hours away from Honolulu, depending on traffic.
We are grades 7-12 with just under 600 students. Its VERY difficult to get kids into our STEM/robotics program, but we manage to get about 25 kids/year. Being in a plantation community, most of the general population students love computer classes since most of them are technology starved at home with no internet access. Seriously. We always get students every year who's first time on a plane is for a mainland robotics trip.:ahh: |

The only reason I created this thread was to see the diversity in the FIRST community. It was not to compare our team to other teams, it was really just to see what was out there, because I literally had no idea what was really out there. Thank you very much for your concern, and we will be sure to use this information more for extending our knowledge of FIRST rather than the betterment of our own team. |

Wow! What a great information base! Thanks to everyone who responded to this thread. These are some very interesting and varying statistics. If I ever find the time ( ) I might create some kind of chart that will make all of these numbers more visual. I am thinking of some type of demographics table or map of FIRST.
