I noticed on the Twitter account thread that some teams didn't have a Twitter, but had a Facebook instead. I figured enough teams would have a Facebook fan page/group to make another thread worthwhile.

we only use facebook to communicate things to our members and discuss designs and stuff. what is the advantage to actually creating a facebook page for your team?

It's a more effective and a faster way of getting information out to people who might be interested, such as comp results, picture galleries, dates, besides creating a casual and easy way for people to ask about the team (assuming they decide to go that route). You can post news quickly from more places than you might be able to with a standard site, and visual content doesn't need to be formatted prior to posting. Putting information and media on a standard site tends to be much more involved and time consuming, and can be somewhat difficult at comps since you spend most of your day at the venue or dealing with other team business. Granted you can minimize the time needed with a CMS setup, but it's still usually a lot faster to write a quick status post on Facebook about how a day of comp went than to write and proof a page long news post on a site

Another thing that's cool about a Facebook page is a page can have it's "favorite pages" on the side. As I find team pages...and now I have a lot more thanks to this post...I add them as a "favorite page". It's a simple click (which is great for me!!) and it gets added to the list. I've added teams and sponsors as I find them.

As far as the question of why having one...We do use it to get information out quickly. We use the "events" function to help spread the word for our Lego camps and other events. Several of our kids and mentors have the posts go directly to their phones! I have...(well, I had help)...linked our Facebook and Twitter accounts through ping.fm. I can update them individually or both at the same time through ping. I'm sure there are other ways of linking things...maybe some of you can share??

It's really cool to see the variety of people that have joined our page!! The only thing that has been a nuisance is the spammers that get on. I check everyone out that joins our page. As long as they are good they can stay, but as soon as I get a spam post I ban them! It got bad for a little while so I took away permission for anyone to post a link. Although with build season upon us, I will probably put that back up.

You can select what type of updates (status, videos, events, etc) get sent to Twitter.

Pages are also better than Groups because any status/photos/etc you post are displayed on a Fan's News Feed, just like a normal profile. Pages can also add applications and boxes like a normal profile.
And last, but certainly not least, Pages have the ability to use "usernames", so you can use Facebook.com/BedfordRobotics instead of Facebook.com/pages/Bedford-Robotics/337645538661.

Google+ does not have a page system for businesses yet (look at this post), so many teams may be waiting for that. I know I'm waiting for that to set one up for 1124. But some teams may still have a +, in which case, share away!

The one potential problem I see with teams using Google+ is that most students cannot use it because they are under 18... but it really is a great way to communicate to parents and alumni!
