2011 Game Manual PDF?

As we are nearing the announcement of the 2011 game, I went to FIRST's website to see about downloading the encrypted game manual ahead of the kick-off, so as they release the password, my team can have a copy available, instead of having to fight off everyone else for FIRST's bandwidth. When I got to the page on the website, I saw that they still had the manual broken in different sections (and still no encrypted game sections), but I began to wonder whether FIRST will release a single PDF version like previous years to save on downloading and to help be better organized.

From what I've seen for the past two years, They will put out the single PDF a couple of days after the kick-off.

A single PDF is usually available with encryption a few days before.

I have been looking for this also. On the FIRST website under the 2011 Decryption test it says this:

Quote:

INSTRUCTIONS FOR DOWNLOADING (and TESTING) ENCRYPTED MANUAL:

In order to be sure that you have the capability to decrypt the files at the appropriate time, a test file is available below.
It says that a test file is available below, which is what I would assume to be the full pdf version. The problem is that there is no file to download.

3 pm --- tap tap tap.
I just want to download it and go home -- my de-encoder program is on the Cray at home. :)
Obviously FIRST is connected to the same clocks at our high school; none of them have the right time either.

And the password is not "Triangle!Circle?Square!" Just putting that out there. The home computer should crack it soon -- the software claims 70 hours for a document that size.

Don't worry, I don't actually read them until after Kickoff. I follow the programmers motto: With great power comes great responsibility, and all.

Re: 2011 Game Manual PDF?

Hmm. My decryption software says it'll take more like 74 hours. At that rate, I'll get it opened about 3 hours after the password is released.

Re: 2011 Game Manual PDF?

Yeah, I know the version you have, which is why I stay with the older Visual Basic 3 one. I juiced it up and trims off a couple of hours.

Haha. I'm surprised nobody made a Bruteforcing@Home yet.

What did they use to encode the game manual?

Well I did have to write a distributed password cracker for a homework assignment once... ;)

According to the FIRST Web Site:
Quote:

The method used to encrypt these files is secure. It is called 128-bit AES encoding, and is a current standard considered by the US Government as completely secure for short (weeks) periods of time.

Thanks to all who replied. I got the manual now, and to me it kind of figures that after I ask about it coming out, the next day it is released.

To paraphrase Douglas Adams:

“Ford! There’s an infinite number of monkeys outside who want to talk to us about this document from FIRST they’ve decrypted!”

The password is released during Kickoff. Right after the game reveal, when they have the quizshow.

Yes. That is the point of the password. So that no one finds out the game before the game is released. Some people try to crack it, but this year it will take longer to crack than it will to just watch kickoff and understand how the game works from there.

I dont think anyone has ever cracked it, no?

Joe G. 06-01-2011 16:14

Re: 2011 Game Manual PDF?

If anyone has, they haven't published it to the masses, or gained any real advantage.

I think every year since they've started doing this, its been the same story; some half-hearted/joking attempts at it, but an encryption too strong to be realistically cracked in time, and no serious attempts or results.

Re: 2011 Game Manual PDF?

Even though I know it is fun to joke about trying to break the encryption, I am going to remind everyone to act with Gracious Professionalism and follow forum rules. The encrypted manual is released early as an aid, so during kickoff you can have it immediately without having to wait to connect to the FIRST website. Continued discussions of cracking may in the future cause FIRST to rethink their process of releasing an encrypted version.

My teamate cracked it once only after kickoff because the password wasn't working. i think it was Lunacy's year (2009).

I just get a "Download Open Password" prompt. Is that where I enter the encryption code we get at Kick-Off? I thought I could download encrypted manual before the Kick-Off. How can I download encrypted manual before Kick-Off?

Re: 2011 Game Manual PDF?

So I feel like a bit of an idiot because I've never had issues with this in years past but I'm having issues downloading the full manual like I normally do. I'm not very computer savvy. Normally when I save a pdf file to my computer I click on it and it opens in adobe and I click save. I thought this is what I've done in years past for the full manual. Although when I click on the link this year I get a pop-up immediately asking for the password and when I don't give the correct one, I don't have an option to save.

Can someone please help? I know I'm probably missing something really simple.

Right click the manual link, and select "save target as," or whatever variant of that phrase your browser uses.
