Kickoff Weather

As in past years, here comes the New England weather just in time for kickoff. Snow, Snow, Snow. I can only remember 1 time in the past 10 years that the New England weather cooperated. It's either snowing or we're in a deep freeze. I hope other remote kickoff locations are doing better.

It's all part of the master plan developed by the GDC. I've heard that DEKA is working with Halliburton on a weather machine and the Gov't only allows testing on the second weekend in January.

Ooh, fun! Nice and chilly, can't wait!
(YES, that's sarcasm. Snow's nice, but it shouldn't interfere with Robotics.)

Stennis Space Center in southern Mississippi is the same as always. Mild and humid!

Last year in Rochester at the kickoff at Kodak, There was a pretty good blizzard that occured.

And a bunch of really REALLY awesome members of awesome teams held a tailgate party in said blizzard. It was like tailgaiting for a Bufflo Bills game. Windy, cold, lots of snow, way too early in the morning.

Oh no! I checked the weather and we are going to have to deal with 61 and sunny in San Diego. How will we survive????

But then, our team is up at 4AM to make the 2 hour drive to San Diego for the kickoff. I guess we still have it better than our friends in Hawaii.
:D

We've had to really pick up the pace since the Soviet Union collapsed, and the Russians don't control our weather for us any more.

Wasn't it just outsourced to China?

Oh, so young and innocent! I seem to recall (before my time, of course ;)) that when Sputnik went up there was some talk about how the Soviets were going to change the weather with it. China outsourcing came much later. They were, of course, the expert in earthquake making. Luckily they could never coordinate everyone to jump off chairs at the same time.

I just know that the years I think I'd like to go to Dean's house party the Friday night before Kickoff, there is always a snowstorm of some sort. I gotta stop wanting to go see Dean's house.

Looks like our weather forecast here in Austin includes rain and mild temps in the low 60s.

I don't mind rain in Austin; we can always use it. Thing is, folks forget what umbrellas are, in between rains.

New England is a fickle mistress, one day we get rain while it's sunny, the next, it snows 7 feet. >.> Exaggeration? Maybe, but you get my point.

Good luck everyone (especially the Northeast).

It's still in the 60's here in Texas. I don't see anything getting in our way....

Good thing our Kickoff building is green and doesn't have heating or cooling :ahh:

Exactly! You can go to bed and it be freezing, leave for work at 6 and it is wicked warm. Or just start snowing without being on the forecasters schedule for another few days.

Current forcast here in MN for Saturday is +7 and snowing. On the bright side, that's about 30 degrees wamer than last year. Even better, I get to stay home and watch this year due to the shortage of seats at the kickoff, so I don't have to get on a school bus with no heat at 6 AM. Last year I could not feel my toes by 6:30 AM...

It's not Kickoff in Michigan without a good snow or ice storm.

Southern New England isn't looking to good.

I think the snow will be gone in time for saturday, or at least mostly done. The question is will the clean up our lot for the school in time:ahh:

Whats worse is our Annual Friday before Kick-Off Movie Night is in the middle of the storm, and by the looks of it, we might not have it if the school is closed. I'm hoping our mentor will convince them to let us come in anyway. Most of us don't mind getting there through the weather.

I'm going to praying tonight it all blows over!

For those who don't have snow in the forecast - i.e., not New England - just send me your shipping address and I'll FedEx some snow to you right away. We have extra. :p

In NC they are calling for just flurries. Of course two days ago they were saying it would be sunny and 'mild'. Please only be flurries! Better yet, go back to sunny and mid-40's.

Here in NYC, snow. My team and I are not going to miss kick-off no matter how deep. Snow shoes anyone.

Current predictions for Kickoff center (which, being New England, will change in ten minutes) is not much snow, at least in NE terms -- see National Weather Service website for Boston area and southern NH.

Well I regret to say our Superintendent pulled the plug and cancled school. On any other day I'd be happy but..., that means that I don't think Our Movie Night is going to happen, and I'm a bit worried about us all getting in our school to watch together :ahh:

Anyone who is traveling further to get off to Kick-Off tomorrow in snowy weather, please take precaution, and I wish you all safe trips and that we will hopefully have not accidents this year.

Rochester NY for Saturday

Cloudy. A chance of snow showers in the morning...then snow showers likely in the afternoon. Accumulation around an inch. Highs in the upper 20s. Light winds...becoming northwest 10 to 15 mph. Chance of snow 60 percent.

Good day for tailgating before kickoff.

Why would you need an umbrella? Damp hair never hurt anyone, at least when its not cold. I certainly know that I don't melt. :D

Funny, nothing going on here in Central Connecticut.

Haha, this is New England, the weather is screwy! It once was pouring rain and I called a friend to find out what the conditions were at our coach's house 40 minutes away and heard 8 inches of snow! The same differences have applied several times from Londonderry and Manchester and we border each other. :p

Currently the radar says light snow for both towns, but down here it has changed to very light snow. :)

Usually, when I see a little box with dark skies, filled with raindrops predicting 100% chance of rain in my weather forecast - I think of words like, squall and squall line. We can have violent weather here which can include raging thunderstorms, winds that will take down trees, and flash flooding.

We can also have the 40% chance of rain that means a shower or drizzle or humid mess.

When I see 100%, I pack an umbrella. If I were picking up the KoP, I would be prepared and/or if I were having to walk a short or long distance to the venue, I would be prepared, but that's just me. Luckily and hopefully, the forecast has changed in the last couple of days and the rain will come in the evening. Or, it could completely change again.

 weather map up to the minute: http://radar.srh.noaa.gov/. It's the (US) National Weather Service, with current cloud locations. There's a line of clouds from Albany down thru Bridgeport, so central CT hasn't got hit yet.

I use it to walk the dog between the bands of rainclouds. :)

Re: Kickoff Weather

We just got a good inch of snow in about an hour. It's stopped snowing now, but it's treacherous on the roads. I was going out to pick up some forms from a teammate's house for tomorrow, and I had to turn back because driving my car safely was impossible. It took me fifteen minutes to go about a mile round-trip, and with no ABS, I was skidding out of every turn (I even slid SIDEWAYS into a curb).

Please take extreme care if you have to face something like this tomorrow! We want all of you to make it back home safely :)

I don't think I can stress this enough!

I'd like to give a memorial tribute to Vikas Parikh of 3125. This was a tragedy that affected many of us teams here in Connecticut.

This accident happened on a day that here in New England, was beautiful and bright out.

With the weather being the way it is, there is more of a risk of accidents happening for Kick-Off this year. Please be careful! I don't think any of us want to read the morning paper, and learn about an accident involving a FRC Team.

Finally, please keep your prayers with the Parikh Family and those of 3125 this weekend.

Even with ABS in a 4WD Van it is not hard to slide on ice that we have here in Minnesota.

Remember that 4WD does not make you invincible. Everyone who drives in snow tomorrow showing up late to the kickoff but healthy is better than showing up to the hospital injured and hoping they have the NASA channel or worse.

I have gotten pretty used to driving on snow with the ridiculous amount we have had so far this year but you always get surprised by ice in unusual spots and snow drifts.

Minnesota tomorrow - Partly cloudy in the morning then clearing. Highs around 10 above. Northwest winds 10 to 15 mph. Lowest wind chill readings 15 below to 25 below zero in the morning.

Time to break out the parka.

It stopped Snowing!!!

Yes theres a ton of it on the ground, but I heard the plows running all night, so the roads couldn't be to bad.
