Why on Earth does anyone care about this either way?

It's pretty absurd and childish to assume that Wil.I.am is obligated to push FIRST in the middle of a multi million dollar production given the Pandora's Box he would open doing so blatantly.
What's to stop some other organization like PETA or Scientology or some large corporation that wants to have some star wearing their logo onstage to hawk their product to the masses while millions are watching? He did fine for what he was able to do. Now can we simply tell him thank you, leave him alone and get back to building robots?

Thank you, Ed.

For some, this is awesome to know that recognition was "possibly" established about something that they care about while millions of people viewed the performance.

Personally, I thought that the attempt was great and important for us that knew about it. It kind of gave us a prelude as to what should come in the near future.

We care because this is a part of our lives that has allowed us to grow and become better than anything we could have ever imagined. That recognition has showed us the light for the years ahead for FIRST.

I agree with your general point 100%.

But just to be fair about the specifics, FIRST isn't being investigated for human trafficking, running animal shelters with the highest rate of killing animals, or funding terrorism.

Hey guys,

I know there is a lot of discussion going around about Will.I.Am and his FIRST hat. Although he did not wear the hat Dean Kamen provided him with, Will.I.Am sent out a message about the standards of education. Personally, I think it is fantastic that he changed up the song just for that message. He set the stage for FIRST. It is our job as members of FIRST to go out and spread the message. We're the ones trying to inspire other youth of our generation to join in on such a fantastic program. We are helping to foster a generation full of youth who are willing to put aside the "nerd" stereotype and work towards a greater tomorrow. Now, with this being said, I think we owe a lot of thanks to Will.I.Am for his message.:)

Getting recognition from the very entertainment obsession that FIRST is trying to replace shouldn't be anyone's real goal. As a tool to help grow FIRST or a cool bonus, sure. But getting upset at the fact that it wasn't as grand or direct as you had hoped is ridiculous.

If you think this is the light for the years ahead, you're fooling yourself. This is the light ahead and is far more important than anything will.i.am can do for the program.

Will.I.Am changed the verse of his mainstream breakthrough song, "Where is the Love?" to talk about
1. the importance of Education,
2. which lead to good jobs in our economy
3. which are fueled by "Innovators"

THIS is what FIRST is about! More so than Logos and hats and cute acroynms ("First things First"). As Dean likes to tell us, FIRST isn't about building FRC robots, it's about building innovators.

Hats off to a (generally) positive artist who is willing to publicly praise our country's innovators during a celebration of athleticism...

ps. Compare his original lines to what he rapped during the halftime show:

Original:
"Overseas, yeah, we try to stop terrorism
But we still got terrorists here livin'
In the USA, the big CIA
The Bloods and The Crips and the KKK..."

Revised:
"In America we need to get things straight
Obama lets get these kids educated
create jobs so the country stays stimulated
This is dedicated to all the innovators"

Absolutely! The "light" reference was simply referring to people in the media catching on.

I think he did a great job. It would have been really awkward if they did anything besides sing. Did you want them to do a "go to usfirst.org" logo with the people dancing? That would also have been a total sellout move. He doesnt have full control of the whole show, just having it on his hat is a good gesture. I think the changing of lyrics is much more important overall, that was awesome.

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble but I think the "Logo" on the helmet was in fact XLV for "superbowl XLV" However, check out one of the interviews before the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QUrMP34kqlQ at 1:35 .
A nice little mention of "the science and engineering" that goes into that kind of a show.

While the lights were just a stretch did any one notice their entrance they descended on the 4 towers that are on this years field. That really was a shout out to the FIRST community without saying anything.

Blurry reflections and a general comment about the state of the country IS NOT in any way a plug or endorsement for FIRST.

The lyrics ARE a message that WE as the FIRST COMMUNITY can stand behind though. Whether or not Dean had any influence on him to use these words or not is anyone's guess, but I highly doubt it. He didn't speak at kickoff because he saw a FIRST robot and had an epiphany but because he saw a program that agrees with his own beliefs about what is important. Believe it or not, FIRST is not the only organization that promotes STEM education.

What some entertainer does or says isn't going to teach a student how to use a screwdriver, design a gearbox, code a subroutine, or wire a circuit. WE can and WE will. Stop arguing about this and GO DO IT.

Alright alright, I guess it's not the logo.

Hey, what did you expect from the same people who try to decode the game hints? :p

I still wonder if "first things first" had anything to do with FIRST, though. Especially coming right after the sentence, "this is dedicated to the innovators." Perhaps we'll never know.

Re: Superbowl + will.i.am + FRC hat

I'm not sure, perhaps some of you have already stated this but I personally think that when Dean was hinting at the Black Eyed Peas and what they might bring up in the super bowl half time show, he was necessarily saying that there was going to be a direct plug to F.I.R.S.T. Rather an attempt to bring to light what the program is all about. I think that the change in lyrics did that, telling the world population that we need to work towards a brighter tomorrow.

As far as the "first things first" part, I think that could have gone either way, maybe that was just a catch phrase that Will.I.Am wanted to use, bringing attention to what our true priorities should be, OR, it could have been a clever way of putting a shout out to the FIRST community. Either way, I think that the right message was put out there.

Just my 2 cents
