I must say I am surprised anyone thought Will.i.am would bring up FIRST, his job is to entertain people, and unfortunately the vast majority of those people would rather be entertained with music than with a speech about FIRST.

Hey. The whole show started with BEPs descending on poles. And four of 'em at that.
There still could be post-game or side-line interviews. not likely but possible. |
Re: Superbowl + will.i.am + FRC hat
So apparently there were some references to FIRST within the performance, but none that were completely noticeable to the average viewer.
|
Re: Superbowl + will.i.am + FRC hat
Did anyone catch the lyrics he sang during "where is the love"? Sounded like the lyrics were different from their original song; could that have been the reference? It was just before he said "First things first".

Before everyone gets "irate":
I wasn't expecting him to bring up FIRST, especially when everything is organized by some Super Bowl committee, and there's a tight schedule everyone has to follow. He had obligations to entertain the crowd, and it would be difficult for him to do anything more than give his "First things first" shoutout. And Dean Kamen was trying to get him to wear the hat, but at no time did will.i.am specifically agree to it. I'm pretty sure Dean was simply hoping for some free publicity by pressuring will.i.am in public. |

For everyone complaining, will.i.am fit pretty much as much FIRST related stuff into that preformance as he could without disrupting the flow of the show or turning it into an advertisment. I commend him in his effort. |

Re: Superbowl + will.i.am + FRC hat
I am appalled by the behavior of the FIRST people on this thread. Everyone is putting down someone for not making a pitch for us. We are supposed to making our own pitches, not relying on someone famous to make them for us. Think before you post please!!!
As for the references to FIRST, someone mentioned the logo scrolling on his helmet. I have DVR and went back to the performance and watched closely. Right after the performance of "Where Is The Love?", Will.I.Am started singing "I had the time of my life..." and I saw, what looked like anyways, an interlocking white circle and blue square. I can't confirm if that is what was really there, but I ran it through 3 times and that is just what I saw. As for any other references, besides the changed lyrics and saying "First things first", I think were coincidences. |

No big whup - either way. For example - I attended the U of Ky alongside an NCAA Championship Basketball Championship team. I walked past their private dorm every day on my way to and from Anderson Hall. I noticed that so, so many people across the campus state and the country let themselves think their fortunes rose and fell with the suceesses and failures of that collection of "students" who could bounce and throw a ball well. Those folks even bought into the ridiculous notion that somehow the team was "their" team. But did the state get excited about the College of Engineering that really did/does belong to the state taxpayers? Did anyone suggest a pep rally before Finals week? Did anyone notice that the health of the state's industrial base and economy could be strengthened more by engineers and scientists than by basketballs? Did anyone suggest that it would be nice to put our 30 smartest students into a nicely appointed private dorm, give them tutors, etc? Well, in a word "No". I personally alteranate between being amused and tired by hearing about what Willie might or might not do. I DO look forward to hearing more about what he does; but I grow a bit tired of breathless speculation about what he might do, and I am really perplexed at the level of disappointment when some of the guesses are wrong. I admit it's been amusing to watch folks spin up and down, but I think I'll go back to taking care of the business in front of me. I'm sure Ms/Mrs Kamen and Will.I.Am will let me know when it's time to help them get something done. Ask yourself where your path to success lies, and what you intend to celebrate as you work to change the culture. Ask yourself who is cheering for you. Give them your attention. Blake PS: I'm glad Will.I.Am has committed to support FIRST; and, I'm not immune to the glamour of his sort of celebrity. But - I have a job to do and while I am glad for his help; I'm certainly not waiting for him to do that job for me. |

I think I remember that during kickoff it was said that FIRST was one of the best kept secrets of the world. Look at FIRST, how big it is, and how unknown to the masses it is. I think that Will.i.am. did what he could do, and he really didn't have much of a say in it all. And if FIRST was well known, would it be like this? I don't think that the world will end just because Will.i.am. didn't mention FIRST. I think we should get back to building robots, not trying to analyze a halftime show.

I must say, when I watched it through on the first try, I only heard the "FIRST things FIRST" comment, but upon looking back through it (and seeing some of the pictures people have shown), I think it's clear that Will.I.Am did everything that could be expected (and more). A straight shout-out would have seemed a little bit awkward given the venue-- but to make subtle references, things that open up future conversations about it-- that's what he did for us. We might not hear anything about it today, but I can almost guarantee you that within the next week, there will be something noticeable mentioned about FIRST, probably through some interview or other.

And that's assuming people can look into his helmet or whatever and actually see anything, or understand the generic lyrics and actually find the reference to FIRST ROBOTICS COMPETITION. We are here because we believe that we can change things and that we can make this world better for the coming generations. We don't need any celebrities to make pitches for us, pitches that would get drowned out by whatever fame the people have. Look at how much we have spread over the years! I'm sure will.i.am did what he could and the result was what we saw and it was more than he needed to do! Dean gave him the hat hoping he would wear it, he never said he would wear it nor was he required.
Could you imagine all the agents and producers with all of these artists who would have had major problems is he turned it into a FIRST sideshow? |

Think about how often we note having seen Dean Kamen on TV or read articles about Dean Kamen and/or his inventions. Many of us pay attention to what's going on in the space program because of the connection that Dave Lavery has to it. We celebrate the years that the Mars rovers have been on Mars and we look forward to new explorations and challenges. Look at the difference that teams are making. For example, The New Cool is a book that I'm really looking forward to reading. We have to keep our focus while continuing to develop the programs in FIRST and in STEM initiatives but it doesn't mean we should isolate ourselves while doing so. As the programs continue to grow and develop, there needs to be a mindfulness about how to do so in ways that spotlight the best we have to offer. And, of course, even as we tend to argue, disagree, criticize, critique, and analyze, we can always be gracious. That doesn't take rocket science. Jane |
Re: Superbowl + will.i.am + FRC hat
I'm not surprised at all that he didn't mention FIRST. In the grand sceme of things, we are very very very small. Hopefully one day it will change, but we aren't there yet. I find it a little silly that people are actually upset Will.i.am didn't blatently call out FIRST.
I actually don't think his hat shows the FIRST logo. I've seen the pictures and just don't think it is. I think us FIRSTers are looking for what we want to see. I watched and listened to the halftime show along with my friends, who have heard of FIRST from me talking about it, but none of us picked up anything FIRST. If people who know about FIRST didn't pick up the references/logo, there is no way the typically person did. |

Re: Superbowl + will.i.am + FRC hat
Additionally he never made a promise, people just made false assumptions and held him to it.

Re: Superbowl + will.i.am + FRC hat
Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm actually glad that they didn't get up there and make a blatant "FIRST is cool, go check it out" statement. Why? Because more likely than not, it would have backfired. The purpose of the half-time show, and in fact the entire Superbowl, is entertainment. Entertainment is what people expect, and the masses would have been dissappointed in anything less, or more, than that. Anything more than entertainment, in the direction that some of you seem to have expected, would have been interpreted as little less than outright product placement. And the fact that we are a fan of the product being placed, or the fact that it's a genuinely good product, doesn't make the action any better...would you have said "oh wow, this is really great!" if he had made a shout-out to Pepsi, or Bridgestone, or any of the products being advertised throughout the game?
I realize that there's a difference between FIRST and a soft drink. But people who do not know about FIRST, do not know this. I guarantee, if he had made a blatant shout-out, the reaction of the masses would have been "Oh wow, Will.I.Am has totally sold out, lets see what dumb organization paid him off." Not the kind of publicity you want. In this case, subtle is good. This isn't going to change the culture overnight, and it would be unreasonable to expect the superbowl halftime show to do that. Most people won't have noticed a thing. But the few that might have will be curious. Maybe there'll be an interview, news story, or something that'll get a bit more publicity. It won't be revolutionary. But it won't be terrible either. And besides, the real sign that FIRST is changing the culture is not what Will.I.Am puts on his hats. Its the people who sat around their computers at kickoff, listened to Will.I.Am get introduced, and said things like "Who?" and "Aw, I wanted to hear Dean Kamen speak." Everyone just remember, we're not a big community, and that's not going to change overnight. But to change it eventually, we have to hang together, and embody the ideals that we work to spread. .02 |
