Branding, recognition, and it adds some connection to the mechanical beast you just spent 6 weeks of your life with. Plus it's pretty fun to come up with names for your robot. Some teams even go as far as painting or adding stickers to really give it "life".

How can you do this http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/photos/31492 if the robot doesn't even have a name? :)

Can't say I've heard of most of those names, but it's a good list to have XD

Our selection process usually includes everyone on the team being given a chance to suggest a name (and any reason behind it), and then a sub-group (Imagery) makes the final decision.

What I'm thinking of for my suggestion is "Felicity". Check out the economic definition. It fits well with the game.

Quote:

In economics, utility is a measure of relative satisfaction. Given this measure, one may speak meaningfully of increasing or decreasing utility, and thereby explain economic behavior in terms of attempts to increase one's utility. Utility is often modeled to be affected by consumption of various goods and services, possession of wealth and spending of leisure time.

I also did some asking around today. Atlas, our 2008 bot, was actually named for the Greek Titan, Atlas. He's the one often portrayed lifting a giant sphere/globe. Similar to the trackball from that year.

Our web team has done a great job of documenting these - pictures and descriptions can be found on our web page.

2010 - MOEmemtum
2009 - CozMOE
2008 - DynaMOE
2007 - MOEzilla

Last year was one of our only years that we decided not to include "Red" in the name somehow.

2010-The Commander, named for a nickname of a mentor who was moving away
2009-Red Hurricane, named for the helix
2008-Red Dragon, named for a dragon decal on it
2007-Red Rover, ?????

Past there I dont know.

Re: Robot names?

We name our robot DEWBOT n (n = I, II, ... , VII). DEWBOT stands for Downingtown East & West (high school) roBOT.

We open a STEM school next year, which may lead to a change in this tradition.

We started naming our bots in 2006

2006 Wazoo, because we had balls coming out of our ....

2007 Randy, named after our teacher sponsor

2008 Lynn, named after the mother of one of our students who died that year.

2009 Wazoo II, see above.

2010 Igor, what hump.

2011 Woody, because the drive base will be made out of wood.

Re: Robot names?

We named our robot McTwist in 2010 year, from a running joke about one of our mentors. 2009 was Orange Force, and 2008 was the Rip City Ape, for reasons we still don't completely understand. Sometimes, our robots (especially in FTC) are named for their mechanical idiosyncrasies. Our 2008 FTC robot was called Squeaky because of its incredible squeaking gearbox. In 2010, we named our robot the Crushinator, for its obvious crushing abilities.

Re: Robot names?

We had a pretty efficient way of naming our robots:

-2005: '05 bot
-2006: Champion bot
-2007: '07 bot
-2008: '08 bot
-2009: '09 bot
-2010: we prefer not to talk about him :D

Re: Robot names?

We had several project names for our robot during 2010 FRC build season. We originally named the robot "The Shark" during development but after an internal naming competition we renamed as WOMBOT. The new name was a combination of Wombat (an Australian marsupial) and Robot.

We have always named our bot here...well mainly me... haha. Since 2252 is the Mavericks we always chose Western Names.... but we don't know yet because we normally make jokes about it mid-season.
