Re: toughboxes

The restriction in the rules isn't on the number of toughboxes but on the number of motors (check R45). There are many other relevant restrictions so please read the rules carefully and ask on the official Q&A forums if you need clarification.

Speaking of transmissions, how do you find the good gear ratio? We want to use 4 cims and 4 transmissions. Where can I find the formula

There is no "one" formual for calculating the optimal drivetrain configuration.

If you'd like a one-stop tool, you can use JVN's Design Calculator that he recently posted here under the media papers section. However, it's only as good as your base assumptions, and those generally take a bit of "gut" knowledge about how systems work.

Barring that, the generally accepted way is to use the motor torque and amperage curves, weight of your robot, and estimated mechanical losses to calculate a baseline. I'm certain your physics teacher could help you in that regard.

Here's a whitepaper that'll help you to figure it out: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/papers/1469

The only restriction would be your $3500 budget.
