Not to necro this thread (though someone's got to do it some time!)

But I was reading this document:

http://bostonfirst.org/pdf/2011-Bost...ome-Packet.pdf

It contradicts it's self.

Quote:

Please do not arrange for internet access at the site, or attempt to connect to the internet
And then later down the page

Quote:

• Wireless: We plan to provide wireless access at the arena to teams who need internet access during the event

So are we getting internet or not?

Mikell Taylor 15-03-2011 11:28

Re: 2011 Boston Regional

We are working with the venue to make sure everyone can access the wireless, so yes, our plan is for you to have access to the internet. However, what we want to avoid is people bringing in their own routers, access points, repeaters, etc that could interfere either with the Arena wireless infrastructure or with the field.

125 hasn't missed one yet, and we don't plan on doing so this year!

Looking forward to a solid competition.

Thanks for the clarification on the wireless availability Mikell.

Fresh from a very exciting and eventful Chesapeake Regional, I'm looking forward to returning to the Boston Regional with TJ^2.

I can't wait to see all the teams I usually don't see! At FLR, we are all familiar faces, but its fun to see some new competition some times! I don't know much of the Boston scene, do any "powerhouse" teams attend (powerhouse being defined as a team like 469, 1114, 67, 217, etc... who win every year)

Re: 2011 Boston Regional

1922, team Oz-Ram will be there. We had a rough time in Manchester mostly because our robot wasn't complete. I am looking forward to seeing what difference we have made in the weeks between.

Grim, I don't know if any of the teams have the national reputation of the teams you mention but the competition last year was as tough and exciting as any I saw anywhere, and Boston and GSR have the best announcing team in FIRST (in my opinion). I hope you enjoy.

They're aren't usually any powerhouse teams who attend Boston, and looking over this years team list I don't see any. The field is pretty wide open...

Will the competition be streamed? I've got an obligation for that Saturday but I thought I might be able to sneak in a look now and then.

fox46 24-03-2011 01:32

Re: 2011 Boston Regional

One of the reasons our team loves the Boston regional is because of the lack of powerhouse teams. Everyone plays on the same level and it's just that much more competitive and exciting!

Mikell Taylor 24-03-2011 11:04

Re: 2011 Boston Regional

Hi everyone,

Two things.

(1) We should have streaming set up via TBA, as in the past.

(2) I have an update on the wifi situation. After speaking with individuals who have worked other regionals, and with our event manager, we will be disabling the wireless in the arena since wifi networks have caused serious issues with the field network configuration at other regionals. Please do not set up any 802.11 networks on your own to prevent interfering with the field. 3G access to the web is fine, obviously, via phones or USB modems, and wired LANs in the pits are okay as well (assuming you manage your cabling safely). I'm sorry we won't be able to provide it this year, but I suspect there's a greater desire for the matches to run smoothly and on time than there is a desire for everyone to have web access.

Hey everyone, just a few things (and please spread the word to those who may not read CD regularly):

-- Yes, Virginia, there *is* a team social, Friday night at the Museum of Science! Free admission to their exhibits and discounted tickets to Omni theater and (the newly redone!) planetarium. Social starts at 6 PM.

-- There are a few scouting tables set up in the box alcoves around the mezzanine on the arena. They have signs on the tables indicating that they are scouting areas. These areas give you an opportunity to sit down, recharge your laptop, and have a good birds-eye view for several matches' worth of scouting. Please remember your gracious professionalism and don't hog the spots -- we have lots of teams who need to scout! -- but definitely take advantage of their use.

-- Thank you all for a great first day! Can't wait to see how Friday and Saturday go!

Hey everyone,

As Mikell mentioned, The Blue Alliance is providing the webcast for the regional for the next two days. We had someone doing a test run of it today and ran into some technical issues that we're going to work to resolve tomorrow, so hopefully all of the morning matches will be webcast, but if not we'll push heavily to make sure things are sorted out and operational for the afternoon and into Saturday.

The webcast feed can be found @ http://www.ustream.tv/channel/bostonregional when we are streaming.

We'll also be archiving all of the matches for the regional.

For those of you with smartphones stop a Tigertron and snap a picture of one of a QR code on our t-shirts!

You will need an application such as RedLaser for the iPhone or Google Goggles for Android devices.

Don't know what QR code is?

We also have QR codes all over our robot. Who knows where they take you? ;)

Wow, interesting ending. I would love to see a video of the foul that caused the alliance that scored enough point to win the regional to have them all negated. Must have been a terrible foul.

:ahh:

I wasn't watching, but from how you described it, it sounds like a red card. With the way FMS is designed, the scorekeeper has to deduct the full score of the alliance in the event of a red card to force them to lose. This shows up as a massive penalty score.

Nuttyman54 09-04-2011 16:20

Re: 2011 Boston Regional

125 received a red card for contact with an opposing alliance robot in its home zone. This is an unfortunate automatic red card, and results in a 0 score for their alliance...

Congrats to 88, 78 and 1099. You guys played very well. Thanks to 125 and 2648 for having faith in our abilities. Boston was great. Good luck to everyone in st. Louis.

That is an unfortunate way to win and lose the regional, Great job to both teams though! That had to be one of the most exciting finals i have seen! Congrats to teams 78, 88, and 1099!

Re: 2011 Boston Regional

Firstly I'd like to personally thank 78 and 1099 for being outstanding alliance partners; it was a pleasure to work with you during eliminations, and we are proud of putting up the highest score of the regional.

I would also like to thank our fellow alliance in the finals, 125, 222 & 2648. Both alliances were very strong and it was fitting that the #1 and #2 seeds should meet in a series of hard fought matches.
I think everyone would rather win in a penalty-free match, and I've expressed elsewhere my thoughts on the number of cardable violations this year, but we have to play the game that we are given. After the first match, blue played a strongly defensive strategy which was clearly the right approach. But the way Logomotion is constructed there is an inherent risk in that strategy, and unfortunately it didn't work out for blue in the last match.

You can say that again!

This was my first Boston Regional as I came down for the day and man was that an event! Week 6 can really bring out some crazy scores with several 4 minibot matches and a 116 to 108 score in elims!

The ending was sad and makes you wish red cards didn't exist in the finals but so is the game!

Congrats to 88,78, and 1099 (see you guys in STL) and to the equally powerful finalists who didn't go down easy 125, 2648, and 222 (see you guys around in the off-season)!

TPNigl 09-04-2011 23:38

Re: 2011 Boston Regional

Again, congrats to 88,78, and 1099 for winning, as well as 125,2648,and 222 for a very hard fought finals.

69 didn't attend Boston this year (wanted to try out some new regionals) but it looked great. I'm glad Boston can be such a great competitive regional to come back to. Great job out there!

Brandon Holley 09-04-2011 23:53

Re: 2011 Boston Regional

Thanks everyone for the kind words about our team.

First a big congrats to the winners 88, 78 and 1099. You guys were an extremely strong alliance, and playing against you guys was some of the most fun I've ever had at a competition.

I am extremely proud of my team and our alliance for getting to the point we did. 2648, you guys were so consistent in both scoring and minibot we were psyched to be able to pick you for an alliance. To my friends over at 222, we knew we might have a chance to grab you in the 2nd round, and I am so happy we did. You completed our alliance perfectly. Our alliance banded together to quickly adapt to robot malfunctions and adopt new strategies on the fly. Working together is what got our alliance as far as we did.

The red card was unfortunate, but warranted as per the letter of the rules. It's a tough way for a regional to end, but it was some of the most fun I've ever had at a FIRST event in my 11 years in the program.

Thanks everyone!

-Brando

Re: 2011 Boston Regional

I would like to congratulate the winning teams 78, 88, and 1099. What a fantastic final match, though it was marred by that auto-red card. I can hardly imagine how much it must suck for 125, 2648, and 222. You guys played great, especially 125's great game of defense.

Finally, I would like to congratulate the guys who beat us: 1100, 1153, and 241. 241's defense was unbelievably good, while 1153 just hung tubes like crazy. And 1100 had the only minibot that could get up the pole faster than ours. Fun fact: That last match we lost was the only match we have lost the minibot race. And that second match was amazing: 69-66, one of the closest scores I have seen without them going into the minibot-winner tiebreaker.

It was an honor to be alliance captain, though it goes to show how much the seeding system is skewed towards teams with reliable(ly) fast minibots. But when you get to elims, it's the tubes that matter.

I don't know if we'll be in Boston next year, but all the teams were great. We were glad we could help everyone out with their parts requests (makes sense if you know we gave out 5 spikes to different teams, not to mention the insane amount of steel cable) :D The energy in Boston is unmatched at any event I have ever been to, though the pit setup is a bit wonky.

Re: 2011 Boston Regional

I, on behalf of team 241, would like to thank everyone for making our first trip to Boston an amazing one, especially our alliance partners in the play offs 1100 and 1153. We are are thankful for all the compliments we received for the two things we worked on the most this year (our defensive drive strategy and our imagery). We had not made it past the quarter finals at a regional since 2003 and after failing to make it into the alliance selections at our home regional(Granite State) we were ecstatic that we were recognized at a regional where we were foreigners. This was an extremely emotional regional for myself as I am most likely retiring as a mentor for the time being due to time commitment issues so I would also like to take this time to thank my team for going wild in the stands when I asked them to, and for my drivers, Rob and Drew, for being the best drivers our team has had in my 6 years on the team.

As a member of Team 1100's drive team, I'd like to say that it was tough finding a good strategy to beat your alliance. I remember clearly thinking this match is sooo close! and the crowd exploded at the results. The minibot races were awesome, in fact I think the only time the match ended early at Boston was in our quarter final matches.

Thanks everyone for the awesome experience!

Thank you guys for playing awesome defense. We were so close to getting 88 78 and 1099 in the semi-finals. I think it came down to one tube, and we left it to go for the minibot. So close. I remember looking at our list of good defense bots during alliance selections, and luckily you guys hadn't been picked yet and we got our pick!

As Team Leader of FIRST Robotics Team 1099 "The DiscoTechs", I would like to thank our alliance partners, Team 88 and Team 78, for choosing us in the alliance selection. Our Team really enjoyed working with you guys and we hope to have the opportunity to work as an "Ultimate trio" again.

Secondly, all teams played very well this weekend. Especially team 1100, who went up against our alliance by themselves when their other partners lost communication.

Good job teams, I hope to see everyone back in Boston next year.
Good Luck to all in Saint Louis!

Hey everyone,

The raw match recordings are now on our FTP and need to be chopped up into individual matches. If anyone has time to help out, email contact@thebluealliance.com and we'll get you set up.

We've also got other regionals that need cutting up, so anyone who can help out would be awesome.

And congrats to everyone on an amazing regional! Finals 2 was one of the most spectacular matches I've seen in my years of FIRST.
