2011 BAE Granite State Regional

Alright, who is excited? :)

Team list is looking packed with 53 teams! Teams that stick out to me that are either here for the first time or haven't ventured up in a while include 61,69,95,176,213,836,1138,1772, and 2010.

4 rookies on the list as well: 3451,3467,3566,and 3585.

This will be a fun year!

Can't wait, 126 will be there again and we are anxious to see the teams that will be there as well...is this your first time at BAE?

Heck yea! 562 is ready and raring, be wary of the bulldog, he tends to hug!

I've been thinking about organizing an unofficial programmer's social at the arena. Anyone up for the idea or willing to work with me on it feel free.

OT: (WOOT 50th post :D)

It isn't my first BAE, I have been attending since 2003! I was a former 1519 member and I am now working with team 3467 out of Windham NH.

Good Luck to our rookies (who hopefully like 3467 have veteran mentors :D). We'll be sure to keep an eye out for you.

BAE should be an epic event this year. The team list seems to be even more stacked than usual and nothing matches the electricity of the Verizon Center during finals! I am very excited to see what unfolds! See you there!

95 is looking forward to Manchester, as always. I think we'll be bringing a real honey of a 'bot this year.

I've also spent a bit of time with 3585 out of Claremont NH. They have a great facility, coaches and really eager students. I think they are shaping up to have a great rookie year. Keep an eye for them.

Manchvegas or Bust!

Re: 2011 BAE Granite State Regional

I'm definitely excited to be attending GSR too! :-) It seems like the competition is particularly strong this year; the average 2010 OPR and CCWM stats for the 2011 GSR team list are 1.5 and .3 respectively... each .5 points above the international average! Although I don't put that much stock in those metrics, it is telling that the attendants of a Week 1 regional are well above the average!

1519 will be looking forward to play with 3 of our alliance partners from last year (1058, 1073, and 1772) and many other friends! Best of luck to all teams!

I was working just outside of Manchester this week, and just flew out a couple of hours ago. I am looking forward to flying back there in 3 weeks!

BAE Granite State was the first FIRST competition I ever attended as a mentor. It holds a special place in my heart! Glad we are coming back this year!

On another note, since we (in the DC area) haven't had the snow related issues we had last year, we do want to offer any help to teams at the Granite State regional who may need assistance - mechanical, electrical, or LabView related. Just look for the members of our RAP (Robobees Assistance Program) team. We would be happy to assist!

Steve

166 will be there, and as usual, you can always come and ask us for help with anything Mech, C++, or (maybe) Labview related.
Zuelu562, that sounds like an awesome idea! I'd definitely participate, if my team would give our software team enough time with the robot that we can finish our code...

Haha, sounds like our team, at least we have a practice board to make sure code works how we want it to (for now). We're not even close to being ready to set up the actual electronics on the robot (scary).

Once we get past Bag let's get some programmers together from the regional and organize it.

Side note: In case you didn't see it, since GSR is a Bag event, we can drop off our robots on Wednesday.

Hey there! I'm a senior on HYPER (69) but it'll be my first time up at GSR. I have a few friends who have been there who said it's great, so I can't wait to get there. See you all there!

And to the person who was talking about an informal programmer social, I would agree that would be pretty cool xD

TPNigl, like I told Matt from 166 let's butt heads about getting the programmer's social together after bag. I think we've all got more than enough on our collective plates at the moment. Also, send me a PM, I have a question for you about the photosensors on the field.

Also, about Bag Drop off, I've been hearing rumblings about NOT being able to set up pits on Wednesday Night Drop-Off, be aware.

This is the official stance. From the email sent to GSR attending teams by Brian Belley:

Quote:

The robot will be moved to it’s assigned Pit location. Personnel will be on site to review the paperwork and certify the information on the Form matches the tags on the robot. The robot will NOT be un-bagged at this point, only the lock will be removed if the paperwork is in order. Material, spare parts, banners, signs, anything unrelated to the bagged robot will be TURNED AWAY. Do NOT bring them with you.
It is permissible to bring the bagged robot in Thursday morning at 7:45 for the same inspection, if you really can't make it Wednesday night. If a lot of teams elect to do this it will result in a lot of delayed unbaggings, so I'm really hoping teams take advantage of Wednesday night. Also at this time teams will be allowed to send in up to 5 team members to unbag the robot (assuming it has passed bag/tag compliance) and load in any pit equipment. At 8:30 the main doors will open and the rest of the teams and spectators can enter.

So, short answer is: Wednesday night is for dropping the robot off only. Anything else, including opening the bag, is verboten.

Why not kill two birds with one stone though? Let teams simply drop off equipment in the pits and not touch it. What are the other BnT regionals doing Wednesday night?

I wish they did that too! Even if it was one load of stuff on Wednesday night since Thursday morning can be a pain with only three people for an entire pit!

Lastly, please let any family, friends, or team members that can’t attend the GSR in person know that this year’s Granite State Regional will have a Webcast to allow spectators from all around the world to view the event. Re: 2011 BAE Granite State Regional

I decided to do some Looking Forward style predictions for this event, just for fun.

20 has produced yet another solid entry for BAE. They looked impressive at their scrimmage, building on their maneuverable 2010 drivebase. Their gripper didn't look the best, but there was already talk of improvement. Expect a solid showing at BAE, although it will take a lot of work and luck to pull off a regional win.

1493 is not exactly a team notable for victory, but they had a surprisingly strong entry this year. Featuring a unique octagonal holonomic base with vertical lift, 1493 will turn some heads at BAE with their agility and surprisingly quick scoring ability. Expect them to fall to the second round of the draft, rounding out a lower seed alliance that scouts well enough to cause at least one major upset.

175 and 176 both performed very well at Suffield. 175 had one of the only functioning minibot, which wasn't great, but was consistent enough to propel them through the eliminations. Both robots scored consistently and should make an impact at BAE.

126 has a very simple, yet impressive tube scorer, showing off a consistent autonomous mode before ship date. They performed well with 1519, another impressive scorer, at the Week Zero event. If these two teams get together, they have a strong shot at taking the regional.

40 is possibly the very first Pink-clone to take the field this year, and they certainly did a great job on their robot. They have their strongest chance to take BAE since 2008, and should be playing in the final match of the event.

Chris thanks for the shoutout on 1493. We have high hopes for this year. Started off a little slow today new gripper design needed some adjustment but we are looking good heading into friday. Special thanks to team 20 for giving us new gear box to save our gripper.

Noting that I have not seen any robots this year from GSR. I would bet money that match 11 (78 and 1519 v.s. 69 and 126) has serious implications on the seeding tomorrow. Those are 4 teams that build robots capable of winning regionals every year.

I think that code red robotics's host got mad at all their traffic, either that or a bill hasn't been paid. I hope it gets sorted out soon! It looks like they host at http://goredhost.com/ which is weird. As far as I can tell the billing is done at http://goredhost.com/members/

Maybe someone can get in touch with them and un-suspend the account. Oh and it looks like goredhost.com has some connection to http://www.newedge.com/web/guest/home as well as a registration at http://goredweb.com/ which is registered to an individual email.

Hope this helps.

Is 131 as good as their ranking suggests? Or are they getting help from alliance partners.

It looks like they've had a relatively easy schedule up to this point. However match 28 they didn't have traditionally good new england teams on their side of the field they still put up good numbers.

I don't have any knowledge of this year's robots though, just my BAE goodness-o-meter from previous years.

I missed most of the New Hampshire webcast due to the Code Red tech dificulties. There is nothing on the Blue Allliance site. Is there going to be any video archive on Friday's game?

Thank you in advance

They probably wont' be up for at least a week after comps! :(

3467 had an amazing day and thanks to all our partners who helped us go as far as we did today! 7/8 deployments successful with the only one missed when we were pushed from the tower (7 were first place and one was second by a split second). We had an amazing day and we cannot wait until tomorrow!

Good luck on the last day of competition from all of us over here on 3467!

WIND IT UP!

The webcast was down most of the day, but it looked like they had drivetrain problems in the few matches I did catch.

They had driver station problems for their matches in the morning. They are working now and have a good minibot (the only one we have lost too but it was close ;) ) and they can score tubes on the top rack. I can see them rising up tomorrow!

Re: 2011 BAE Granite State Regional

Yes, we had driverstation problems. One of the inspectors had us reimage our new classmate needlessly which pretty much bricked it, then neither of our programming mentors' laptops seemed to be able to connect, nor our old classmate. We got a loaner classmate (thanks to 1493, who offered to let us use theirs), and will use that for tomorrow.

Also, we had the wrong braker on our lift motor, causing it to trip and shut down, taking the rest of the CAN network with it. We took it off CAN and put a bigger breaker in, and its now working fully.

We look forward to playing a few more matches tomorrow!

This post could not have been more accurate!

When Match 11 was first played in the morning, 3566, 78, and 1519 lost to 69, 166, and 126 by a score of 49-66. However, 3566's robot did not move due to field issues, which resulted in a replay of the match (and Matches 8-10, as well, for the same reason - it was apparently an issue with the driver station, I am not sure about the details). Match 11 was replayed as the last match of the day, at almost 7PM, due to the delay issues earlier in the day, and the 3566, 78, 1519 alliance topped the 69, 166, and 126 alliance by a score of 90-34 thanks to awesome tube scoring from 78, tube ferrying by 3566, solid scoring from 1519, and back-to-back mini-bot strikes from 1519 and 3566.

Just a quick update on GSR field issues:

There have been numerous field issues, including a unclear matter regarding CAN bus robots. Teams using CAN bus have been advised that it can't be assured to work on the field. It doesn't seem to be consistent, and no one can replicate the issue, but 95 spent several matches dead before it was pointed out.

We've rewired to use PWM, as has at least a few other teams. Hopefully the issue is eventually resolved, but at this point we're scared off of canbus (I'm calling it can't bus for now).

I'll be curious to see if this has cropped up at any other regionals, or if it's isolated to this field.

You are using Java, right? We are too. The guy who was helping us thought that is was the Java CAN bus that had an issue. We had issues until we found that one of the jaguars' breakers was being tripped, causing the bus to die (as stated above).

We are indeed using java. I hadn't heard that theory, but I suppose it's plausible as any. I'm sure it will all get figured out in the coming days.

Oh well. We ended up not using any of the cool CAN bus tricks the jags offer, so it didn't really lose us much besides two matches and a lot of now messy wiring.

We had CANbus issues prior to ship and couldn't get it to be stable. We pulled it out and replaced it with PWMs a week before ship and have had no issues since. We run Java and we believe the issues are between Java and Can, and not the hardware.

Someone got a tube on the tower. The best part? It actually prevented a team from deploying their minibot (from what I would see) .

The real best part? It was against themselves, from what I could see. And they still won.

Congratulations to 175, 1519 and 176 for an impressive win.

I felt a little guilty watching the game from poolside down here in Florida... But I got over it...

All four minibots scored in the last match... Very Impressive! Minibots most definitely made the difference at this regional...

Regards,

Mike

The real real best part? I was coaching the human player that landed that tube....and three days prior while discussing how to throw tubes he asked me what to do if one of his throws were to ring around the tower. I told him it probably wasn't possible. He proved me wrong. Very wrong.

But anyway... a big thanks to 175 and 1519 for a great afternoon!!!
