It's the only picture I found. It's not the best, so I'll be looking for others in the mean time. It's from before we actually put the whole thing together.

Wow, I had to do a double-take when I saw your robot. Looked very familiar to our robot in my rookie year:

Semi-related note: I see you guys are using tank treads again this year. Do you like the pushing benefits it provides?

Sorry for the poor quality, but this should suffice until i can get a better picture on Saturday

Edit: @Ed, it may be better if you just edited the first post instead of making new ones each time you get more photos.

Yeah, we pretty much use treads every year we can: We like being "that guy" who can push everyone else around. Very rarely is there a year when that is not either a valid strategy, or plain out useful. The only issue with using treads is how heavy they are! This is also the first year that we are using SuperShifters, so we can also be quite speedy as well as pushy. Also, in the video, the treads havent been sanded down yet (to get to the soft rubber underneath them--these treads are recycled from our T-Shirt launcher), so we should be even more pushy once we get that done on Thursday. We have a long list of things that are going to be fixed between now FLR, including increasing the travel of our gripper, since we were having a bit of trouble picking up some shapes, though with a bit of practice we can do it fine.

Can't wait to see you guys there!

I'm going to suggest that forum-wide these threads shouldn't be posted too far in advance of the regionals. We shouldn't be seeing MN 10,000 Lakes threads until at least week 3.

IDK about you guys, but I want to see who I'm competing with ASAP.

In other news, im not seeing too many floor picker-uppers at FLR this year...So far.

Just about everyone at the rally could pick up from the floor...

I think it will be highly competitive.

Lots of tubes on the ground, robots that can't pick form the floor will have issues staying on top of the ranking.

and 174 can too.

Teams at FLR are known to at times have unique answers in playing the game, so I wouldn't be surprised if 1/3rd of the robots won't pick up from the floor...however I still highly doubt it.

What I am interested in is FLR human players. In Lunacy, seeing human players was part of the fun. It makes me think that one team might pick a team just because their human player can throw the entire length of the field.

FLR is a fantastic regional, very competitive and you dont see the same teams win year in and year out. Also, win or lose you know you will always have a great time.

To add to that, you don't even know who will do well each year; you might be a finalist one year, and the next not even reach elims. Or vise versa!

*ahem*

Champions last year at top seed, and the year before nothing to write home about. The year before that, second place, and the year before that didn't even make the tournament.

...we hope to break the up-down cycle and keep the NY/BR cup for a second year!

Looking at the videos of your bot, you'll have a good year. I'd love to see another 1551/217/174 hookup in the finals haha.

Also here is a lame video with 174 stuff in it. Don't look too hard for robot stuff because this was made before we put the whole thing together. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YhwIN0RwjI

:p heehee. Well, I've got to start showing less favoritism now since I'm volunteering. *gets serious*

Whatever happens this year, it will sure be great. 2007, the other tube year, was a very good year for FLR, and a difficult one in the elimination matches. that year 5 rubber matches were played in elims, one of them in the finals. that was the year that gave 1450 and 250 their share of the FLR banners.

The very, very interesting thing about this game is that it isn't hard to build a robot to do all the things required of it this year. The hard part is building a robot that does all of those things better than everyone else's robots.

We can floor load. We can feeder-load. We can score on all pegs. We score on the top peg in autonomous (from the straight or the Y). We've got a consistent minibot of at least reasonable speed (though not as fast as we'd like -- and we're working on that!) We're pretty fast, and our driver is absolute nails...

...but we're 9:1 on 6" mecanum, so we can't push (except against all you other mecanum/omni bots out there), and I think we might have drastically underestimated the strength of throwing tubes into your own scoring zone, and thus didn't gear for quite that speed on our manipulator.

1551 aspires to get better every year. We have an almost completely new team this year, what with most of our team graduating last year and being replaced by a greater number of 'rookie' members (of whom I am incredibly proud)...

We'd love to be in the position to be choosing our alliance again this year. But as with all things: we shall see.

Can't wait to compete Mr. Freivald. Last year was a total blast in Atlanta:) . Hopefully we can do well again this year in conjunction with our brethren at 340.

Re: 2011 FLR Robots

Team 217 is excited to go to FLR for the second straight year (3rd time since its inception in 2005). I am sorry to disappoint but you will have to wait to see our robot at the event this year. I put the robot picture on lock down this year for many reasons that I really don't want to discuss here.

I will tell you about some features, though:

6WD using 6 motors (4 CIM + 2 RS775) and shifting.

Arm robot that can pick-up from the floor and place on the top row.

Unique gripper that is not a roller claw.

A 1.4 second mini-bot, including deployment time (no, this is not a joke)

Can't wait to see everyone at the event.

Paul

Hmm. Unique gripper. - By that I would think one that we have yet to see online.

So far we have seen the wide clamp, the small finger clamp, the whisker, the roller claw, and the inside tube pickers. I think 217 has found the other option. This makes me really excited to see what they came up with and to wonder if it was something that we came up with during the season.

Good to see 217 has decided to come back, always welcomed.

An inside roller claw pincher on a 10 bar linkage? :)

Our elevator was acting up and was in need of adjustment. There are other vids of us going for the top. The actual robot will be much better.

By watching us at the rally, one would get the impression that we couldn't score at all in spite of a neat-looking arm...

We had a poorly installed encoder that had gotten scratched (a lot!), and once fixed worked fine... But it took us a good while to hunt down exactly what the problem was.

We spend the last 6 hours of the pre-bagging period fixing various encoders at the expense of driver practice (It was programming vs drivers, and when your programmer is a driver...)

Anywho, there has got to be a better way to close loops that those incredibly unreliable rotary encoders! Even the one we got preinstalled on our supershifter didn't work!

Team 1640 is looking forward to seeing everyone at FLR! Looks like it'll be a great event.

1640's DEWBOT VII
  • 4-wheel independently driven & steered, continuous rotation swerve drive (unicorn drive) - improved over our first generation Creativity Award-winning system
  • 4-bar linkage fiberglass pultrusion arm for floor pickup and pre-set scoring at all heights
  • Consistent top-row scoring in autonomous
  • Live camera feed for floor pickup and minibot deployment
  • ~4.5 second minibot with deployment
  • Another few days practice on a full field
