Team 2791 - Shaker Robotics - Pre-Ship Video

Luckily we got enough video to make one of these.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of our scoring was done when I was unloading my camera's memory card. Trust me, we're pretty good on the several shots not shown. Honest. Seriously. :p

(Also, the video implies we can't ground load square tubes apparently? We can...)

Robot looks great, two questions.
Can you retract the claw back into starting configuration or is it a once its out its out thing?
Are you at all worried about a wooden claw in a high speed collision with another robot?

Looks great.

It cannot retract. It's a one time gravity latch. Our plan is to bring the claw into the bumper zone by raising the arm to scoring height. We went to great lengths to ensure our CG would be low enough to allow this.

Yes. Parts of it are surprisingly sturdy (mainly the "fingers", and the solid core wooden tube) but we'd prefer to not ram robots with it. We plan to push backwards.

Chris,

Bot looks great and very similar to ours. I am sure you won't have any trouble competing this season. Good luck at WPI!

The kids and H did a great job in your absence man. Congrats on putting out a competetive robot and a sweet sweet drivetrain.

Akash - they figured out my secret to success - make a lot of noise in the first two weeks of build, disappear, come back when they're done building, take all the credit.

In all seriousness, this was the first year I can really look back and say I had a definitive influence and impact on the team and robot design. I'm glad to have helped, but all of the detail work that made the robot come together just in time is all thanks to our excellent student and teacher support. There are so many nifty and cool little mechanisms and tricks they came up with to make the robot work.

I love the fact that you guys paid homage to the 1726/842 and 1714 roots with your robot. When will you showcase the minibot?

Yup, our design backgrounds are pretty obvious here. A lot was borrowed from 1726's successful 2007 robot, and the claw is loosely based on their 2007 claw. H was able to tell us about the success and headaches of their 2007 robot so that we could make our claw better. For example, they had problems with gripping tubes due to their claw's surface area being quite narrow, so our claw is much wider to compensate for that.

We engaged in a "talking collaboration" with 1726 and 842 this year, which has led to improved robots all around. Our arm deployment is a derivative of a 1726 design, and our claw was partly inspired by the success of 842's pinch prototypes. I was also personally glad to talk with and in many cases enlist the help of 3450, 816, and 1477 during the build season.

Our 1714 roots should be pretty obvious with the entirely polycarbonate minibot and deployment system. I worked surprisingly little on these systems, but I like to think of it as a nice little tribute to a great team that taught me so much. :)

When we get video of it

We are also looking into a minibot upgrade, code named Plan B. This minibot, if successful, will dramatically increase our competitiveness.

heh....we based our LogoMotion robot sort of on Ring-O, but started over completely on the claw, that wasn't a very good design. I like our new one, it's much easier to pick up tubes with it.

Looks like you all built a really nice machine this year, hope you do well at the competition!

Nice robot I wish I would have seen your team in action at the event I had to leave early. It was nice to see all the capital area robots working so well pre-ship, hopefully that means good things for the area this year

That octagon shaped bot in the background looks like a beast:)

A lot of really good robots were shown today but this one is the only awesome video with music Ive seen today that I find myself rewatching a few times already. Im excited to see you guys again at Hartford.

Yeah, they sure do! This looks like a great year for 1493. I loved your octagonal drive base and vertical lift.
