Class of 2011 - the Dean's List Finalists

So, after the first week, I wanted to see about creating a running tally of the Dean's List finalists from all the regionals. And maybe, the Class of '10 finalists & winners could meet with the Class of 2011 finalists at the Championships this year. Do something fun together perhaps; we'll figure it out. :D

So, here's the list I have so far:

BAE Systems/Granite State Regional:
1058 - TJ Evarts
166 - Matthew Soucy

New Jersey Regional:
1089 - Lenny Bernas
2265 - Francesca Arcidiancono

Finger Lakes Regional:
1511 - Jason Kuberka
578 - John Herb

Alamo Regional:
57 - Joshua Bryant
3529 - Unknown (They aren't posted on usfirst.org - Would anyone be willing to fill in the blanks? Please & thank you!)

I just want to congratulate the inaugural members of the Dean's List Finalists Class of 2011! You've given your all to spread the message of FIRST, and I'm really excited to get to know you guys. See you at Championships!

Congratulations to everyone so far! I can't wait to meet up with the new kids :)

I plan on being at the Boston Regional to help present the Dean's list award there!

Didn't jot down the winner from 3529 but 57's was the irreplaceable Joshua Bryant. Who we're nonetheless going to have to find a replacement for next year. Somehow.

Thanks for the info!

My team was thinking the same thing, and they have narrowed down my continued presence on the team to three options: cloning me, trapping me in the robotics shop at our school indefinitely, or kidnapping me in the night from my college (which is about 4 miles from my high school) for build sessions. Scary thing is, they seemed like they were serious about the second & third options......

Watch out Kyle, they sound serious. Not that there's anything wrong with being in FIRST for an extra year or five. Congratulations, guys, you all rock! And I agree, assuming my team can make it to Championships (Chairmans AND Dean's List! This is the probably only way I'd be able to make it), I would LOVE to do something with you guys!

thats pretty much the exact sentiment from 1089 about lenny. the amount of work he does for the team is remarkable. on top of our team, he mentors other teams and volunteers at a wide variety of events. I dont know how you can replace someone like that, but I know 1089 will try their best next year (im graduating too lol)

When I was presented with the cert at Boston last year from Dean, he pretty much said "You're stuck in FIRST forever now" with a huge smile on his face..

Congrats to all these winners.

I think its important to get as many Dean's List Finalist to Championships as possible. To make this happen I'm looking for a few roommates whose team isn't attending CMP, but won DL Finalist award. PM me if you're interested.

Please, I want to give this opportunity for first time DL Finalist winners. Winning this is a big deal, and trust me, you want to be at CMP if you won.

Peachtree Regional:
Alex Epstein-1311
Rick Shanor-2415

Rick Shanor is the most deserving person for Dean's List possibly ever. I'm probably a little biased because he is my Captain, fellow driver, and friend, but seriously. This guy deserves it. He CADed 90% of our robot. Spends 60+ hours a week in the shop perfecting our robot. He embodies what FIRST is about: dedicated kids who have a real desire to learn about robotics and engineering.

Yeah, I'm not going to lie; 2415 is a large favorite of mine, along with 1311. Hoping that Rick & Alex becomes a Dean's List award winners at Championships. :D

For all the finalists, I have something.

The Dean's List Award is an amazing honor to have bestowed upon you. While this is a honor, it's also a responsibility; not to be taken lightly. FIRST is something that needs to expand; not only in the aspect of teams in the league, but the real impact we're having in our individual counties, districts, states, & countries in getting people excited about science, math, engineering, & technology. The other thing is about improving the experience of FIRST for the members involved. These are some of the primary missions of the Dean's List. You are the future movers and shakers of FIRST from being the epitome of the FIRST mission; and this award is a step towards creating the next level of excellence for this organization. If you're ready to endeavor on this journey with me, the Dean's List Class of 2010 & the others already chosen this year, I've only got one thing to say.

Welcome to the Dean's List Finalist Class of '11.

Congrats, and I hope to work with you all on making FIRST better and brighter for the next generation.

Two well deserving peers. :D Glad to say that Tyler will be joining our team (1983) for travel to St. Louis. It seems to be that Dean's list has brought 1778 and us even closer together (if that's possible).

Maybe we'll get a Dean's list win between the two of us, it wouldn't surprise me, either one of them could take it from world champs!

I was incredibly excited to hear Rick's name called at Peachtree this weekend. As someone who was/is a mentor for team 2415 in 2008 and 2011, but not in 2009 and 2010, I can speak to how much robotics has changed Rick as well as how much he has impacted our team. It was obvious from the start that he had the leadership and interest to do great things, and since then he has improved his technical skills (design, CAD, machining, etc.), become a much better driver, and learned how to lead a group of students. We wouldn't have had half the success that we have seen in our four years without him, and he will be impossible to replace. He's truly a great representative of FIRST and the impact it can have.

Nick Jones from 364 deserves it. He's the binding force of the robot this year. Between wiring the whole thing virtually unassisted, driving it, and putting up with me and the rest of the programmers, he's an amazing kid and I didn't want anyone else on the stick at Bayou.

Dean made a surprise visit in the middle of matches and Dean's List was announced then, so that might be why the system is wacky. However, one of the winners was Will Pierson from 1732. This is their second Dean's List kid!

Marissa becoming a Dean's list finalist was the highlight for 1902's trip to South Carolina. I first encountered Marissa when she was in 8th grade, and I was judging the Florida FLL state championship. That year their presentation blew the judges away, and we unanimously decided her team should be sent to the FLL World Showcase to represent the state. She Then moved to FRC, where she has become team 1902's Co-president, the lead programmer, and the Chairman's Award lead. I have had the priviledge to work with her over the past few years, and can guarantee 1902's 2010 Chairman's Award winning essay would not have been completed without her. This is just the tip of the iceberg for all she has done for 1902, we are so proud, and are very excited to see her excel in college.

I'll dig up the image tonight and post it here.

At the moment I don't have the means to get to St. Louis (if anyone wants to share a hotel room hit me up), so I won't be able to help you guys out with making some buttons up. I think it'll be fantastic if we had the buttons again.

I might take you up on the roommate offer; I'm not traveling up with our FTC team, I'm pretty sure.

And for the buttons; if I go, I can bring up a large set of buttons with me when I make them later on. If I don't go, I'll send them up with my FTC team.

Re: Class of 2011 - the Dean's List Finalists

Congrats to Hans and all the other Dean's List finalists! I am so thrilled and honored to be listed with you guys. FIRST has been the best experience of my high school career and this year has been an amazing senior year for me :)

On another note....I need help getting to Championships. Not sure yet if I can afford travel expenses, but if I can I will probably need either a team to attach to [preferably from OR/WA] or a few Dean's List ladies to room with. Last year I was fortunate enough to travel to Championships with a local team as their videographer....I'd be happy to help a team out with anything during the competition!

I am also attempting to convince my parents that winning Dean's List is a VERY good reason to go to Championships! Can anyone provide me with backup info? :D

Again, congrats and thank you!

Congratulations. winning Dean's list is probably the biggest reason to go to St. Louis because it is the only personal achievement award given to students for the work you personally put into the team. clearly your dedication stands out and has effected your entire team in a positive way and im sure all of your team members agree that.
if the financial burden is too much for you see if you can ask your team to help you out. A friend and member of my former team won this year and i know that if there was anything keeping her from going as far as she could with this honor that our team would do anything we could to help. don't be afraid to ask.
congratulations again and best of luck(well second best)

Got it. I changed the year to 2011 (for obvious reasons). If we can get as many people as possible that are going to St. Louis to make some that would be great. What we did last year was give them to pit admin, they will know what to do with them (somehow they figured it out last year)

I'll help with making the buttons. My team is definitely going to championships and our team members say that they are missing the button making process. And best of luck to all the other Dean's list finalists out there, can't wait to meet all of you in St. Louis.

OK I want to brag on our kids for a minute. EnTech 281 also has two Dean's list finalists. Last year it was Megan Shew (who won it as a junior) and is our club's president. This year it is David Gaddy. David was our programming captain last year and leader of our FTC team that went to the eliminations at nationals. He spent countless hours working on our summer robot greeter project for the AJ Wittenberg elementary school here in Greenville (those at Palmetto had a chance to meet AJ at the arena north entrance). David was the unanimous choice for our robot team captain this year among our mentors, and saw us through another successful build season.

We could tell David had made Dean's list before the announcer because Megan was down on the field to present the award and peeked at the winner. She practically started bouncing out of her shoes.

Anyway, they are both great kids and we will miss them both next year.

Gah! I told her to stay as calm as possible if he won -- admittedly I had little faith in her ability to do so.

You can add the Roseville FireBears (2846) as another team with two Dean's Lists Finalists. Sean Grogan won last year. Ben Prather won this year. Both at 10000 Lakes Regional.

Those two are among the many very good team members that make up our team.

Add 1730 Team Driven to the list of teams with 2 Dean's List winners. Paul Sites won it last year at the Greater Kansas City Regional and Clint Ott took home one of the awards yesterday at the Minnesota North Star Regional.

An added bonus was watching my son be presented the award by Dean Kamen himself on the field at Mariucci Arena. Thanks to Dean and all of the FIRST executives for making appearances at the Regional events. The kids get such a thrill out of seeing these individuals in person!

It was pretty funny (at least for the mentors). I'm not sure the kids realized what was going on and I'm sure David didn't (I was sitting two seats down from him).

Everyone at FRC team 558, the Elm City Robo Squad, could not be prouder of Rohit. I have watched this young man mature from an over-eager, anxious freshman to a patient senior who leads by example, taking on any task that is asked of him with enthusiasm. His dedication to our team and to FIRST is second to none, often waking early on Saturday mornings and taking a 45-minute bus ride just to be at the school for 8:00 a.m. during build season. Congratulations, Rohit!! We are doing our best to get you to St. Louis!!:)

I've got 100+ of the yellow Dean's list buttons printed, and will be punching those all tonight. I'll post when I complete them.

I'm thinking I might alphabetize by last name (for when I give the bags to pit admin) and sharpie names on the back of the pins... thoughts?

I would just give them to pit admin and leave it at that. Putting names on them creates more work for you and pit admin.

Maybe have a list for Pit Admin to check off when the pins are given out, or have the person taking the pins sign for them. Or have more than enough for the inevitable goof ups that are going to happen.

Thanks for doing this, I'm sure the Dean's List Finalist will wear the pins with pride.

No problem! I'm happy to do this for everyone. :)

Last year, pit admin had a sign in, just so the event runners could see who's present, so hopefully we can ask them to just have kids mark off that they got a button, or however else we'll attempt this.

I just hope no other poor soul is doubling up making buttons >_<

Thats seems like a little over kill, in my opinion. Although, if you would like to do it and you have the man power to do so go for it.

Thanks for making these up Crystal! I'm still working out whether I will be able to make it or not (roommates...anyone? PM me.). Although, we should just start planning on meeting up at Roboprom like we did last year. Thoughts?

Re: Class of 2011 - the Dean's List Finalists

Hey!

I should have been more on top of this, but I'm really glad that others were! I would suggest that roboprom would be a good place to meet again, for both the current and last year's finalists/winners. I'll be volunteering in FLL for most of Championships but would love to meet people!

(And to brag we have 2, technically 3 - I won last year, Nick Bandiera from our team won this year (GTR West, team 1334) and Paul Fossenier (Waterloo, team 3161) was on our team before he helped to start 3161)

Also, there is a facebook group for finalists - that may be a good place to look for hotel rooms to share! Friend me (Evelyn Wainewright) and I'll add you. (I think it was kept private last year because we had a bunch of people offering hotel details back and forth and we thought it would be better to not be public).

Let me know if there's anything I can do to help organize any of this!

Thanks,
Evelyn

Re: Class of 2011 - the Dean's List Finalists

Congrats to all the winners this week!

Re: Class of 2011 - the Dean's List Finalists

Big day for Team 1014!! Lindsey Fox and Kyle Torrico both winning the awards at Buckeye. Team 1014 now has 3 Dean's List Finalists with Phil Aufdencamp winning at Buckeye last year. I am so lucky to work with these students, I have learned more from them than I could ever hope to teach them. Truly amazing and deserving kids. Very excited and congrats to all winners, so excited to see as many as possible get together in St. Louis, what an amazing room that would be!!!

I'll be there volunteering and representing 348 with our other team captain, we didn't bring the robot but will be working with some beloved friends in FIRST at the Championship.

Also, is there a thread where winners are posting the essays their mentors wrote? I'd love to read about the other amazing finalists I might get to meet! Congrats, everyone! :)

Casey,

Last season, Rich Kressly posted the essay written for Delia Votsch from FRC 1712, as a white paper here in CD. This was the essay.

If you would like to start a thread asking for the essays to be posted, that might be a good idea or they could be uploaded inidividually as white papers like Delia's was. Sometimes, the essays are very personal and the team doesn't feel comfortable posting them in CD - so not everyone participates.

Jane

I sent the invite last night, so hopefully you got it!

I can't recall if there was any thread for essay posting this year (or last year) but we did post them in a thread on the FB page.

PLEASE, 2011 DL winners, FRIEND EACHOTHER and join the FB group! It'll help us of the 2010 class get in touch with you and help you with getting around the Championship event.

If you haven't joined the group yet, friend me (Crystal Vongnaphone) and I'll add you! You can also contact: Brandon Dean / Kyle J. Fender.

I'll be posting a thread this coming week about more details on meeting up and steps to getting around Champs as a Dean's list finalist!

Cheers!
Crystal.

Invite sent!

Let me know if it works :(

Apparently some finalists are having trouble accepting the request to get in.

------------------

Here are the students with pending requests:

Lindsey Fox
Danielle Sisk
Marissa Goldberg
Alexander Ouellet
Josh Hansen
Alex Epstein
Stacey Lynn Willick
Tyler Baker
Lydia Johnston

Can't figure out where the request went?

Follow these directions:

Visit Facebook
Go to the Groups Tab (homepage, left side)
Underneath the groups you're already a part of click "see all"

Thanks to Marisa Ashour who figured that one out for us!

Actually, almost all of the 2010 Dean's List finalists are admins.

If you don't feel comfortable friending strangers on facebook, feel free to PM someone from last year and we will get you in the group.

Yup, something like that. We seem to be the most active of all the admins out there, currently though =\

True, true. I tend to quietly stalk forums/groups/people and provide input when needed.

Hey Everyone!

I hope CMPs were a blast! Unfortunately I was unable to attend this year. I am a 2011 Dean's List Finalist and noticed my name on the list you are putting together. My name is actually Torgeir :) I do not have a Facebook but am starting to up my participation on Chief Delphi. See ya around!
