There were visible flames - the robot was disabled. Fire extinguisher at the ready but did not need to be used. Must not have been severe damage because the bot was back on the field for their next match ... hot as ever ... :yikes:

Quite the punny title there. Best lighting effects this year yet. Props to 1573 for pulling it off.

A perfect case for hitting the E-Stop without risk of a penalty!

...or was that just from the wheels on the carpet ?

Anyone have the video of this match?

Visible flames sound interesting.

the fire started from the wires of the electrical system.

A similar thing happened to us last year in Philadelphia. Two PWM Wires shorted together releasing a large amount of smoke, but their was no visible flame, just a lot of smoke.

Impressive. Interesting to note that its one of the teams thats been active in Israel since the Israeli Regional was started back in (correct me if I'm wrong) 2005. I wonder what caused it. Its not often you see 6+ year veteran teams making a mistake like that.

We were a 9 year Vet team when it happened to us...

It happens to everyone from time to time. Insulation gets rubbed off and things short. I recall in 2006 a team had their PWM cables short to their frame and their nylon coverings went up in smoke. Plus, these sort of things aren't always really damaging to a robot, insulation burning can create a ton of smoke but only requires replacing the wire.

Indeed it does. Things break, it happens to everyone. I was merely making the observation that its not often that you see long standing vets literally go up in smoke.

Everyone makes mistakes. I can remember in 2008, 1114's robot (which only lost 7 matches in its 3 regional + championship season) had one match at Waterloo where the main power cable became disconnected during autonomous.

Every year we seem to melt 24"-36" of PWM cable on our practice robots.
