Watlzing Matilda in Hawaii

"Waltzing Matilda" is one of Australia's most famed country folk song, and has been referred to as "the unofficial national anthem of Australia". The song refers back to Australia's history as a convict colony. Waltzing Matilda narrates the story of a homeless man (swagman) making a cup of tea at a bush camp by a pond (billibong) and capturing a sheep--which one assumes he intends to eat. When the sheep's owner arrives with three police officers to arrest the worker for the theft (a crime punishable by hanging), the swagman commits suicide by drowning himself in the nearby pond, and then goes on to haunt the site.

We hope you enjoy our version of the song as performed at the Hawaiian Regional!
