Flakey Victors

Caution: if your Victors are acting flakey, it may be because they have gotten flakey. Delphi C/A from Flint tipped us off to this when two of our Victors started acting up: we opened them up and found some metal shavings inside that had somehow slipped past our shields when we were drilling on our machine. A ray of hope: sometimes the act of cleaning them out allows them to resume normal operation.

Sounds more like metal flakes, than metal shavings!!!! I wonder if the metal part of the MOSFET is live? The flakes would probably not be good for them at that point. We had what we thought was a bad fan on one of our Victors, turned out to be a lug had fallen into the fan and was impeding its' rotation. Quick removal saved the fan.

What exactly were the Victors doing when you had this problem. Were they totally dead? Or did you get a flashing light? I would like to know, because i haven't yet opened up the Victor that went out on our machine, and it would help if i knew what the problem was.

The problems were various. One thought it had a good nuetral signal even when there was no signal wires connected to it. I don't recall what was wrong with the other, but it was something completely different.

The metal tabs on the MOSFETS are connected to the center lead (drain). Definitely a hot terminal, with a LOT of current available if shorted out. Be careful with dropped hardware!
