Seen them getting filmed the whole time, its just that the book is about the 09 season and they are filming the 2011 season... The story won't line up.

Re: The New Cool as a Movie

Idk It seems like a good Idea but ya know spiderman 3 seemed like a great idea also. If they used an actual first team and went through everything they did It would be pretty cool I would like to see the adventures of 217, 1114, or really any team that builds a great robot every year.

I am not sure that the film crews you saw were for a movie, More likely they were for a news piece. Everything seems to be pointing towards this being produced by Scott Rudin and Disney and that it will be a screen play, not a documentary, meaning actors will be cast, they wont be editing together footage from this year.

Re: The New Cool as a Movie

Yea as long as they use unknown actors Ill be cool no justin beiber or anything along those lines.

The filming you witnessed is not for the actual movie. The producer and writer were at the San Diego and Los Angeles regionals filming to get a feel for what a competition is like and what a team goes through during a competition. They'll be using the footage they got to help write the screen play.

Oh, c'mon. You guys need to have fun with this. Who will play the characters in the book? We can cast this thing just as well as anyone in Hollywood, right?

I'll start:

Amir Abo-Shaeer: Alexander Siddig or maybe Don Hany

Andy B.

Well (clears throat), I am mentioned on page two of the prologue as "mentor dressed in a nun's habit". This could be my big break! :D

Dan Akroyd playing Andy Baker playing the nun from Blues brothers would be ironically appropriate...

LMAO...

I've heard Arnold Schwarzenegger suggested for Paul's cameo, but I'm thinking Matt Damon.

I kind of like Jay Baruchel for Greg Needel, but Greg reserves the right to play himself so he can get a IMDB entry.

Who would play dean kamen? Also Just would love to see people screaming for super cells saying go go go. This actually wouldn't be totally horrible it could be actually quite funny. @Baker You would come save the day when the team breaks a transmission or something and they would be in a state of panic. Then you show up in a truck and go " You need a hand?" (That's why I don't write anything.)

Not to break up the fun in this thread, but why not just have those who the story is written about, play themselves? I feel like it would be most fitting - assuming they don't look too old for the roles..?

People who are not actors are not nearly as good at this as one might think.

Both that, and it's practically a requirement to talk about which famous movie stars would be funny/good as a certain character.

This would be an awesome movie, even if it would already be outdated game-wise.

They can be trained, presumably. Didn't you see the Mythbusters episode a few weeks back where Adam and Jamie got acting lessons--in acting like each other?

It was the "Mission Impossible" episode, aired about 2-3 weeks ago. How many people did they fool? Depended on range and whether they talked or not.

I'm fairly certain that they wouldn't need to be actors, considering it's a book written about their experiences... A few tips and maybe a lesson or two is probably all many of them would need.

As cool that would be, if I were I in that situation I would get too nervous to do a proper job, thus why I'm an engineer not an actor. :p I think it'll be better and hopefully they get big names to make the movie happen and that they do it well. It'll help create this culture change in the real world that Dean and Woodie founded USFIRST for.

I really hope they do the FIRST community justice and really capture the spirit and enthusiasm we all share.

I think a bigger factor than their acting skills/ability to be trained is whether or not they would have the time to film the material...especially since they have day jobs.

People are terrible at acting natural on camera without proper training. It would be painful to watch a robotics team act in a full length movie, even one that was about that robotics team. Acting is significantly more difficult than you would expect.

If you don't believe me bring a camera to a meeting, when some one on your team does something interesting, ask them to do the exact same thing again for the camera, 99% of the time it won't look natural.

Inspirational Disney movies have to have Denzel Washington in them somewhere. Denzel Washington as Koko Ed....(can you tell I've yet to read the book? :-P)

Re: The New Cool as a Movie

I wonder if it is going to be in theaters or if it going to be one of them that they play on the disney channel all the time. Theaters might be bigger news, but I think having it played on disney channel all the time might get more new members for the teams everywhere. I can't tell you the number of times I've seen "The Luck of the Irish" and "Halloween Town" not to mention many others that they showed 5+ times per day for certain stretches.

Anyone know which way it is going to go? If not, anyone have a preference which way would be better?

Top producer Scott Rudin, the force behind movies like No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood, has bought the film rights to the story in association with Disney.

as stated by http://www.nealbascomb.com/blog/file...a9ae576-6.html

Re: The New Cool as a Movie

I hope no one has completely scraped there 2009 bots yet...

I wonder if they will just extend the 2012/2013/2014 Championships to film the movie or have us go to the Georgia Dome for a totally faux, but totally awesome championship mock up? (that last one has a 0.01% chance of actually happening, but we can dream)

Now Im a bit worried because of movie studios habit of simply buying rights to a movie, not to make it, just to keep it out of the hands of rival companies. But I would hate to see what Dean will do to Disney if filming dosent begin promptly, though XD.

All and all, Im exited for this; and I demand an Oscar...

Totally agree....

Also, I'm trying to wrap my mind around what a movie would look like.

Drumline ?? Fired Up ?? Bring it on ?? Glee ??

Mutual of Omaha's "Wild Kingdom"

Forrest Gump ??

Every kid that joins marching band watches 'drumline', every cheerleader watches a cheerleading movie.

How can you make a movie that has appeal to a general audience ?

.

I would stay close to the general flow of the book. The main story line would be 1717 journey to CMP. Use it to set the tone for the movie. As the build season starts, bring mix in the stories from HOT, Thunderchicken, and Two Train Robotics. Show all of them coming together at CMP tying all the stories together. Maybe even change the ending a bit to have them all competing on Einstein. At the end of the movie, do one of those bits where they show the character and a little narrative of where they are now.

That would make the movie more interesting than seeing them fall flat.

Re: The New Cool as a Movie

The director will be Michael Bacall, who wrote the screenplays for "21 Jump Street" and "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World".

I won't mind if they take a few liberties with some of the technical details, as long as they capture the magic of FIRST Robotics. They have to appeal to a much wider audience than FRC students & mentors.

I made the mistake of watching the movie "Crimson Tide" with a submarine commander. I tried to enjoy the movie, but he was constantly snickering at the technical errors in the movie. I never noticed them.

So when the movie is finally released try not to worry about the details & just enjoy it!
