Labview Tutorials
 

So im a new programmer for our team and am currently attempting to learn labview. I was just wondering, does anyone know and good tutorial sites or videos, does anyone have any tips or tricks, and is there anything important that i should know to not blow our robot up. Keep in mind these tutorials should be simple enough for someone with very minimal background in programming. Help is greatly appreciated.

Every programmer ought to know an Elmer. The best resource you can find is a helpful mentor.

If there is something missing from the FRCmastery site that you would like to see, I can definitely pass it on. There may not be many new videos for a while now, but we can still add ideas to the list.

Every FRC programmer needs to have an understanding of at least the basic issues involved with programming a realtime system. For example, why you can't put a large delay in TeleOp.

Hey, check my labview tutorials on youtube (http://www.youtube.com/user/FRCDaniel). They do not deal with the robotics library (the functions to control jaguars, compressors, etc), but they teach you the concept in which labview programing is based and some of the basics. The tutorials also teach some advanced stuff like semaphores and state machines. The videos can also be found on http://labviewtutorials.zxq.net/ this website has the videos in the order they should be seen.

LabVIEW is a really cool thing to know and learn, I think it deserves a lot more credit than many people in the programming world give it (but, that's a discussion for somewhere else). Knowing LV can be an amazing asset for a programmer in the real world (I'm currently using it in an internship of mine, and it's a project I would cringe at doing in another language)

NI has great resources and support for all things LabVIEW. If you need help with a general LV topic (i.e. not WPILib - for that, try the FIRST Community), the NI Developer Zone has some great resources, as do their discussion forums. And, if you start up LabVIEW, on the getting started screen, and click on "Find FRC Examples" or "Getting Started Tutorials" you will find some instructions on doing many commonly used robot tasks. As for anything else, I'm sure the CD community can answer any other specific question that might arise.

As far as not utterly destroying things, my best advice is just to keep a cool head and remember that simplicity is key. And don't ever stop asking questions - if you're not sure about something, ask, ask, ask away, either to a mentor or to CD. You'll be sure to be more knowledgeable than when you started.

Just don't give up. There will be many times where you want to throw the computer or destroy the robot. The best advice is be ready to ask questions. You will run into problems. Just be ready to go around and ask questions or connect with other local teams and ask for help.

Always test drivetrain code with the robot on blocks first, just in case you've got your directions backward. Take similar precautions with your non-drivetrain systems. ::safety::

Make sure everyone is standing somewhere safe when you test (not where an arm is going to whack them if you've made a mistake ::ouch:: ).

Work in bite-sized chunks at first. It's easier to troubleshoot a complex scenario if you work up to it, rather than jumping straight into the whole thing. Baby steps.
