Summer Road Trip

I'm interested in taking a road trip and visiting/interviewing as many FIRST teams as I can asking what FIRST means to them. I would also ask the mentors what advice they would give to new mentors and teams. I would blog the whole adventure, advice, and interviews. I wanted to see if there's an interest in the idea. I would love to hear you thoughts on it.

you could save a bunch of gas by just attending IRI.

Just a suggestion:
You could have this road trip end at the Indiana Robotics Invitational. There are hundreds of students and mentors in attendance (Most, if not all, love FIRST!), you're bound to get some good interviews many esteemed mentors!

I will definitely go to the Indiana Robotics Invitational. I'm not sure where all the stops will be. Part of it I also wanna see the sights and see the different teams and how they work in their own workshops. Depending on how it goes I would be interested to do a follow up at the IRI.

If you get anyway near the Kansas City area, I would gladly contribute and I'm sure we would allow you to observe one of our summer meetings.

If you could make it, we would love to show a fellow FIRSTer around Sydney. It will only take you 55 days by car according to Google Maps! :yikes:

(Or, if you prefer walking, it will take you 184 days!!!)

Come visit Austin. We've got some good things happening this summer, including the new off-season that will be hosted at Anderson High School. We'd love to have you. And... Austin, itself, is a fun place to visit!

If I had/get enough money I would love to go visit FIRST in Sydney not sure if thats gonna happen this summer though. Maybe if this goes well I'll try for a world FIRST trip next summer. Austins sounds like a great place to visit I'll definitely have to stop by if the trips pans out.

Darn I see 1802 beat me to it. Anyhow, if you're in the Kansas City area, Metal Mustang Robotics would love to show you around our facility and tell you how much FIRST means to us. Good luck on your road trip (Hope you don't mind if you get to a stop after Kansas and find a few MMR kids in your trunk! :D )

Re: Summer Road Trip

I would definatly reccomend you take a trip up to New England. This is in my (heavily biased) opinon one of the best places for FIRST. :p

All kidding aside, New England is a cool place for FIRST. We may not have IRI, but many would say that we have one of the best series of off-season events in the country.

If your up in Central CT, I'm sure one of the teams up here would be more then willing to show you around. Like I said though, visiting a team and then going to one of our off-seasons is a great way to experience FIRST in New England.

Re: Summer Road Trip

Remember to fit Michigan into that trip somewhere. I'm sure you could find plenty of willing teams anywhere you go.

Perhaps it would help if you explained where you would be starting from and how far you were willing to travel?

Re: Summer Road Trip

That would be pretty cool to do. Thats exactly what neighboring teams should do, they should merge and attend eachother's meeting so that they can experience, work together, and spread the meaning of F.I.R.S.T!!!!!!!!!!!

The location is listed as Elk Grove. 2073 is based in Elk Grove, CA.

Elk Grove to IRI and back would be a pretty fun trip--especially if the Cheesy Poofs (San Jose, a couple hours to the southwest) were driving and had room for an extra person. (Note: It's far enough that most folks would be flying unless they really wanted to take a road trip.)

Re: Summer Road Trip

Pretty much my only restriction would be time if the trip works out. I would leave last week of June or first week of July and I just have to back by august 10ish so I can get ready for school. I don't mind driving so I pretty much game to go anywhere and everywhere. If other people want to join me I'm cool with it so long as I have the seats for it. As much faith as I have in duct tape I don't think the highway patrol would be okay with people duct taped to the roof. I'm thinking of spending a few days in a general area but the plan is still in the works so it may change.

Exploding Bacon will be at IRI, but if you make it to Florida we would love to show you around.

Take pictures! Post your findings! I'd love to see what other teams' shops look like!

Re: Summer Road Trip

If you head East, shoot for stopping in Western NY. We can take you for a trip on the Erie Canal and have you meet with several of the teams in this area that are year-round teams. Rolling Thunder is hosting the Rochester Rampage at the Monroe County Fair from July 13-17, with a full field and area teams in action!

Yup. I'm not sure how accessible school shops would be due to summer but - I know some teams will be preparing for the off-season so it would be worth the shot.

Re: Summer Road Trip

So far it looking like I'm going to be floating around the country till around the 19 or 20th depending on where I'm at then I'll be going to the IRI and after that I'm going to head to Austin for the inaugural 2011 Texas Robot Round up. The interview questions are starting to come together. I'm also working up how much this is going to cost and I might look into getting some sponsors (suggestions) for the trip so I can up the quality of information (video and pictures) and be able to visit more places (more gas money). It's looking like this may happen I should know by next week or two. Also I'll be putting spots up for grab to travel with me (for how ever long anybody wants too, if anybody wants, too) next week if the trip get more of the necessities crossed off the list. Hope it's still capturing your interest, and have a great day/night.
