New cypress model

I was surfing the web, and I found out that Cypress made a updated version of the PSoC 3, it seems like the only difference is ES2 Silicon vs Production Silicon (newer). They give you a code so you only have to pay for shipping if you have an old one. My question is, is it worth while to update? Has anyone done it yet? Will it be legal? What are the differences in the two Silicons (why would they change?)
the Board
Upgrade

Thanks in advance,
Micah

Re: New cypress model

Before trading the old KOP Cypress board in for a newer model, I'd wait for FIRST to release matching field tested FRC Cypress firmware.
The FRC firmware is currently the only way that the Driver Station application is permitted to talk to the Cypress and probably won't be compatible with the newer board.

Knowing that risk, you could experiment with modifying and recompiling the FRC firmware for the newer board. I wouldn't necessarily depend on it working in time for competition.

To add onto Mark, FIRST also specifically directed teams this year to not upgrade their Cypress firmware because they could not guarantee the compatibility of updated firmware with the current DS software.

While there's a chance for FIRST to legalize the new one, I doubt it will happen unless the previous one gets discontinued.
