Harry Potter - The End Of An Era

Hi all,

As many of you know, I've been a Harry Potter fan from the very first book up through this very last movie. :) It's been an amazing adventure and I thought a thread would be nice for those of us who have enjoyed the books, the movies, the characters, the hidden meanings and plays on words, and the school, Hogwarts.

I'll add some thoughts after watching this last movie and share some of my favorite moments. Hopefully, some of you would like to do that, too.

Thank you for starting this!

I've lost track of how many times I've re-read the books. Harry Potter was the defining series of my childhood, and millions of others, and I think it means something a little different to all of us.

I'm not sure that I consider the release of the last movie the "end of an era" as much as many (I'm the type of fan who thinks the first 2 Chris Colombus movies are best). But I'm most definitely seeing it day 1, and I'm sure I'll have plenty to say afterwords as well.

And as some of us will inevitably suffer HP-withdrawal, here's a fantastic Harry Potter related project I've had a lot of fun reading recently:

Mark Reads Harry Potter

Background information: Mark Oshiro had done a few satrical chapter-by-chapter reviews of other popular book series, most notably twilight, completely ripping them apart in the process. Somewhere along the line, someone suggested harry potter, which Mark had never read. He starts out fully expecting the books to be mediocre at best...and by the 4th chapter of the 1st book, completely falls in love with the series.

As a warning, the writing style of the reviews is often deeply influenced by "internet meme culture," which to me became bothersome at times. Despite this, they're pretty deeply insightful. But best of all, these reviews do a fantastic job of bringing back the mystery, suspense, and discovery of a new world that we all felt on our first read through. I strongly suggest that everyone check them out.

I've been a fan of the series since book 3 came out.(I never read much before it.) I'll certainly see the new movie eventually, though am unsure when I'll get someone to go see it with.

On a side note: Does anyone plan to follow pottermore? I'm still kind of unsure what it is after watching the videos but will admit I'm curious.

The other day I met a kid entering 4th grade in the fall, who had read all the Harry Potter books in the last month. I thought that was most impressive. There must be something good in there, but I wouldn't know.

At least there won't be anymore late runs to the bookstore during IRI to get our hands on a box for Greg when we have someplace to be....

I'm not but I read the books since I was in 1st grade...it was pretty awesome. that was the only way I could fall asleep when I was younger. I have read them all multiple times but my favorite is Prisoner of Azkaban, Sorcerer's Stone, Order of the Phoenix, Half Blood, and Deathly Hallows. If Netflix wasnt changing its rates, I wouldve got the Part 2 once it came out on demand/dvd. Oh well...its so awesome that its finally ending with a bang. Like with Lord of the Rings...I was sad it ended but the series is so great that you cant get enough of reading them. Tolkien did a great job I cant really complain that much about Rowling since I have been reading her books since I was really young.

Be sure to leave spoilers off of here until the movie comes out at least. We wouldn't want to ruin anything for those who haven't read the books. They deserve to enjoy the ending just as much as others of us have.

It was during the time of the Other Tube Game. 4 years ago. It really did seem like yesterday.

These books have been a part of my life since I was 7. I've gone to (I think) almost every midnight showing, and I've been to 3 or 4 midnight book launches.

Tonight will be incredible! A little part of me will be sad, but I think that the excitement will overshadow that.

Mischief managed.

How many of you are going to the midnight release and then are going to work the next day? I am! Thank goodness for 5 hour energies, monster, montain dew, and a foutain of coffee, lol. I'm very excited for it tonight though!

*sniff* I can't believe it's over! I cried as the credits rolled when I saw it yesterday. :( But, as the great Dr. Suess said, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened". So, to listen to the good doctor's orders, I must say, Thank you, Harry Potter, for enriching my childhood, and giving me what as perhaps been one of the greatest tales of all time. :D

Spent the day watching the movie. Two times. :)

I'm going to sit with it a while and let thoughts form about the movie and the whole experience. If anything sifts down, I'll share it.

Only a few more weeks until I never have to hear about this for the rest of my life! Well, aside of brief blips around the inevitable box-set releases. Finally.

I was thinking more of a prequel. The Rise of Voldemort. They could start when he was still a student at Hogwarts and take it 1 year at a time. I can't imagine a way to stretch the money farther.

It's funny how ignorance and arrogance are two themes that thread themselves through the series, winding some characters into spools of dismal pontifical emptiness. Politically and powerfully so.
