FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

No, it doesn't exist, not yet. But it could.

Basically, what if every year the citizens of CD put togeather a slideshow of every robot that compeated in the respective season. Do you think we could put togeather a collection of every robot this season? I know that there are people who take pictures of all the robots at their respective comptitions. I figure with just a bit over 2000 teams and .2 seconds per team the slideshow would be under 8 minutes. I don't know if this is possible this late in the year (I dare you to prove me wrong) but if we had a thread open early next year everyone would be able to put pictures in it throughout the entire season. I'm willing to sort, figure out what teams are missing, produce the video, and otherwise manage all logistics (provided no else wants to help me.) The biggest factor is the enormous amount of pictures which are needed.

Anyways, I just thought that it would be a fantastic way to comemorate each season.

Thoughts on this, and/or pictures of this season's robots are welcome. I curently have zero pictures but I'm beginning my quest after IRI (might even take a camera there:) ).

Now tell me, am I crazy or is this possible?

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Probably not every robot, but I bet we could get a good 75%.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

I think this would be difficult to do after the fact, but with some pre-planning and direct communication with teams, it could certainty be pulled off during the regional season.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Wow, even if every robot got only one second, the slide show would be 33 minutes long.

This would be a cool addition to FRC Designs! This is a great idea that would showoff what FRC is all about. I would be willing to partner with you on this project in the future! Let me know what you think!

Sounds like a great idea to me. Teams take pictures of every team at their regional for scouting purposes. We probably have every team from both KC and 10,000 Lakes.

This would be a fun video to watch in the dead time before kick-off next year. If you produce the video, maybe you can talk FIRST into playing it.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

This would be really cool to do, a good place for most Michigan teams is Dan Ernst. Here

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

It is a great idea. I have most from Midwest and would love to help out! I wouldn't mind .3-.5 seconds per bot. This way, you get a decent look at each bot, while still being able to keep the video to a decent length. (And I agree, it would be a great addition to FRC Designs).

PS- I think it can be done...

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

I think that a slideshow for this year could probably happen with all the scouting databases out there. I know our scouting team tries to get pictures of every robot at each regional we go to.

MattC9 20-07-2011 22:43

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Great idea, so there's ~60 events in the regular season before champs. So we would need to get at least 1 person from each event to take a picture of EVERY robot there, then just send there files to you (or who ever wants to take the files in) done.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

This is a fantastic idea! Team 1515 would love to contribute!
I can send you a .zip of all LA Regional robots.
These came from our scouting data this year. We never actually used the images, but I have them on my computer regardless.

If this ever does happen, please email me at msimon@msedesign.net

I may be able to get ahold of pictures of the robots from the Israel (IL) Regional, so if I do so, I will post again.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

We could try to do one this year but it will be better to try to do this during competition season. We could try to use TBA and get website links for teams and dig for photos but that would be the hard way.

BJC 20-07-2011 23:47

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Hey guys, I'm glad you like the idea, that's the first step to making it happen. Even though it's pretty late this year I really think we can pull it off. It would be a shame to miss the 20th anniversary year.

Other ideas I had but didn't put in the opening post:

-having 2 or 4 robots showing on the screen at the same time to decrease video length for part of the time.
-having the teams in number order with their number in a corner of the screen.
-highlighting the world champions at the end of the video.
-intermittently having video of robots actually playing (think less than 5 second increments)
-Having one of Dean's speeches in the background (Think hearing "and one day some of these kids might just change the world." then Bam! the World Champion Robots)

Of course, we'll need pictures first. I'm thinking that a large mix of types of pictures would be good. Some posed like on ship day, some in the pits with people working on them, some in action on the field, etc.

I love your website and I agree it would greatly increase content. I think once it was finished it would probably be published to CD so everyone has excess to it as a promotional tool. That said we could defiantly get all the pictures individually to you for FRC designs and probably also to TBA. Oh, and though I’m short to say partnership as that seems barring to others who might want to help, I’d love working with you.

Are any of you going to be at IRI? Perhaps we could further discuss the logistics of this down there during lunch or something?

Tristan Lall 21-07-2011 02:24

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

How about breaking it up into tasks? One person volunteers to co-ordinate photos of all of the teams from a regional. They delegate people (maybe including themself) to photograph each robot in the pits. Another set of delegates (probably with media passes) photographs all of the teams from the regional at field level. Repeat everywhere.

Make sure to take high-quality colour images when possible—but none of that film stuff, unless the photographer also volunteers to scan the images in a timely fashion.

Then upload the image files to a central repository. (Maybe The Blue Alliance, maybe FIRSTWiki, maybe even Wikimedia Commons. Either way, be sure to list author information, date and location, plus some information about the image. And photographers need to explicitly release their images under some licence—this saves so many headaches later on, e.g. if FIRST wants to use your photo in a brochure, they know how to credit you. I strongly recommend CC-BY-SA 3.0.)

Hold on - I said with 2000 robots the video was 33 minutes long. You may need to include FLL and FTC robots to fill out the time.

JesseK 21-07-2011 09:04

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Bryan beat me to it -- a 33 minute slideshow is the perfect backdrop to one of Dean's speeches on Einstein.

We could possibly even take the 2,000 photos and make a gigantic photo mosaic

Or the slideshow could be part of the filler at events, in addition to or intertwined with the sponsor loop that gets really really old for people who sit in the stands.

I like it; I think it will take 1 person per Regional to get photos of the bots at the events.

Only one person per event? Personally, I think it'd be easier to have maybe 2 people per event, since about 60 robots per event is a lot to handle for one person, since most likely their team will need them a lot.

If you need photos of 256, we have them! I like this idea, and would like to contribute to it somehow.

IKE 21-07-2011 11:00

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

I would agree that you should probably have 1 person "in charge" per event. If they want a couple helpers, that is up to them, but you should have 1 Point of Contact sending in all 60 pictures.

The Blue Alliance had tried something similar in the past. I believe they even had some scripts set up so that if you put a certain subject in the Email, and named the files with a common (FRC_TEAMNUMBER.jpg), then it would auto-populate when they ran the script.

I have pics for every team from Kettering.

flyingcrayons 21-07-2011 12:01

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

its really not that difficult for one person to get pics of all the robots at an event. we had a student go around for the past couple of years taking pics of all the robots for scouting purposes and she had no problem with it. i liked IKE's idea above of having one person in charge, but if they want helpers thats their choice, and they can plan that out. im now an alumni of my team but im going to remain in contact with them over the next few years, so im sure i can get one of them to get pics of all the robots at the NJ regional (we go every year), as well as another regional should the team decide to go to two next year :)

this is a great idea, i really hope everything works out

stundt1 21-07-2011 12:19

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Another way to get pictures would be to talk to the guy who took pictures at the championships of all the robots and ask him for photos we will get a bunch from him probably I forgot the thread on CD.

johnr 21-07-2011 13:48

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Doesn't FiM request a picture of each robot in case you win an award so that they can put it on the slide show. First can do this much easier if they just ask for all teams to submit a picture or cad before teams bag or ship.

Luckryan 21-07-2011 14:27

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

This sounds like a great idea... I think that there should be some kind of sheet for people to put down what regional they have or are going to do if this is happening next year. I personaly have almost all of OR and WA.

ChuckDickerson 21-07-2011 16:22

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

What if FIRST just made it a requirement that every team has to upload a suitable robot photo along with it's Bill of Materials to TIMS by a certain deadline? Say 1 week after ship day. The photos could be printed in regional programs, used by the judges when evaluating teams, and put in the online FIRST team database to be used when scouting.

stundt1 21-07-2011 17:28

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Maybe we could get to out a paragraph in bills blog asking for teams to send a photo of there robot to a email?

We're already supposed to be uploading our robot photos in TIMS...have been for years.
For the judges at events I presume. Now to get those photos out of FIRST HQ is another thing entirely.

After half a day of searching I've found:

1 2 16 20 21 25 27 33 40 51 53 56 63 66 67 68 70 74 94 123 201 216 217 226 244 245 247 280 288 302 314 359 440 469 494 503 515 519 548 573 610 703 815 818 830 862 894 903 910 1023 1188 1250 1243 1322 1502 1504 1528 1596 1684 1701 1718 1918 2048 2054 2075 2137 2246 2337 2586 2604 2612 2673 2676 2767 2832 2851 2959 2960 3069 3096 3098 3115 3234 3322 3414 3421 3534 3535 3536 3538 3539 3542 3547 3548 3568 3570 3601 3604 3605 3619 3620 3621 3632 3657 3688 3688 3770 3771

In total 108 robots, not too shabby, Most of these were taken from Dan Ernst's collections. If anyone has photos could you please direct me to them or put them on this thread? Thank you.

One more thing, try to use pictures in which the robot's numbers are visible on their bumpers.

Regards, Bryan

There are pictures on www.frc-designs.com of robots from this year.

I think I might have some from DC from scouting Ill check. Another way to get photos would be the FRC tracker 2011 app but It would take a while getting every single photo I can try and check. Also would you like help making the video? Id be more than willing to help out:O.

EDIT I got the files from app we should be having a lot of photos from this...

EDIT EDIT: 675 photos from app estimated about. Problem is I would have to rename all files a .png is there a easy way to select a group of files and make them all pngs?

My email is 93bryanc@gmail.com

I'm not sure if I'll need help actually making the video. If it's just photos in order at interval then it's very easy to do. If we want to get fancy, throw in video, add team numbers to photos, etc then I'll definatly want help. Which is used is dependant on what the video will be used for. If we're looking to fill time on screen next year like several people have suggested simple is better. If we're making a video people can look back on to remember the season it needs to be entertaining.

Oh, I've been labeling pictures simply by their team #'s. So If your able to do that before you send them It's much easier to keep them in order.

Thanks guys, Bryan

I'm not an expert at all on this, but if you're gonna put team numbers on the pictures, the easiest thing would just to go into any image editing software and just make a textbox.

That would be perfect! Thank you!

I think if you really want to get this to be an every year type of thing, you should start an e-mailing list for next year, and before the season collect out as many e-mails as possible, and send a mass e-mail out asking people to figure out what regionals they're doing and start a list and just assign people to take pictures of every robot from their assigned regional. Just my $.02!

Did you get all of mine ? The file names are the team numbers. Anything else I could do to help?

Next year every regional will have a preplanned person taking pictures of each robot. I suppose we can begin taking commitments now. No reason not to. Oh, and people can overlap the same regionals. Having doubles of robots allows for better pictures in the final video as well as a variety of backgrounds (field, pit, shop, etc).

I hate to only be able to offer my team's photo, maybe I'll be able to contribute more next year.

Anyway, here's FRC Team 1985's photo.

This brings up an interesting point in my mind. How many robots total have been made?

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

By my calculation that is 764 teams out of 2065 (from FIRST's FMS database) - or 37.02% of the way there. Way to go, Bryan!

Yes, with only 37% of teams we are bound to be missing lots. If you have pictures of any Va. teams I would be happy to put them on the list.

Thanks, Bryan

I also made a simple opener to acompany the Logomotion logo. If anyone wants to make a better one or improve this one I would be happy use theirs as oppose to this one.

Thanks, Bryan

This year's photos were Devan Williams or Andres Bravo (unsure as to who, but anything after Boilermaker was Devan)

Thank you for putting this together. It looks awesome.

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

I noticed you mentioned Dan Ernst, who is a phenomenal resource for all of the Michigan teams. There is also a guy (I think his name is Wayne, but I'm not sure I can't find anything that he wrote) from 1501 who takes loads of pictures. I remember after champs he had a thread with all of the robots he took pictures of. Just another resource to be aware of.

This is an awesome idea by the way, I hope it works out.

There might be some teams here that you don't yet have:

Most of the pictures were either posted on Chief or taken by our team at SVR and San Diego. 233 may have contributed some pictures from DC as well.

For those teams that you are missing pictures from, you could try visiting there teams web page and trying to find a good current picture.

I could attribute them to Cheesyscout, what do you think of that?

I am relunctant to do this because it would then become very, very difficult to make sure people got credit for their photos. I still might end up having to though if I can't find certain teams.

Is there a way that we can see a preview of this slideshow?

Speaking of which, the photos I have that I used from Chesapeake were from Team 2789, they had pictrues on their website public.

Yes, I suppose this is true. In up and comming years we should be able to credit most every person who helped out. This year, however, I suppose I won't be able to.

I'm sorry this took so long, I had no internet all weekend.

This "preview" is the teams I have 1-997 1 second per picture which seems about right for filler at compititions between matches. Because some of the pictures were pretty small I had to standardize the resolution at 640 480 aka youtube resolution.

Comments are welcome. Pictures are even more welcome. Again, if you don't like the picture of your robot in this preview or have one you would like me to use, put it in this thread or send it to my email at 93bryanc@gmail.com .

Interested to see if I could get a better picture of our robot for you. I'll see what I can do.

Your picture exceeds the file limit on CD. If you email me at 93bryanc@gmail.com I'd be happy to sent you the picture.

If you would like to see the picture of your robot I am using please email me at the above email as many of the pictures are too big for CD.

Thank you, Bryan

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

Hey everyone, I'm sorry to say this but for the most part this project has come to a hault and needs forum assistance to continue. I no longer really have the time to find pictures with our team beginning to seriously meet for the new season, the OCCRA season starting, and new to our team this year a Vex program, in addition to 5 AP classes.

Basically, I can process pictures but really need further support from others to actually get the pictures to me. (This was always too big of a job for one person.) For the most part the robot list stands as it was before.

Finally, if I can't get all of the pictures what do you guys think I should do with all of them. I was thinking more of a top 100 sort of video which I was probably going to make anyways. It would be kind of like all of the FIRST propaganda but revolving around the robots as opposed to the people. Suggestions on this (and pictures:rolleyes: ) would be great.

Thanks, Bryan Culver

Re: FRC Slideshow: Every Robot

This is the first year keep in mind we wont get every picture of the robots. I think we have a good number of robots to make the video. Just my opinion.....
As years progress we can get more and more pictures.

I have to agree with that. With all of the pictures that we have we can easily make a decent slideshow.

It works on Google Chrome here. Make sure you when you first click the link to "update your flash player" or "Click if already installed."

Due to the extreme size of the picture folder, even after compressing, the site was unable to handle the storage space. If you are looking for a particular picture(s), send an email to the site. Thanks!

We're working on a download from the frc-designs.com

In the meantime you can download all of the pictures from mediafire.com
-Because of mediafire's file size limit you need to download the pictures in 3 seperate parts if you want all of them.

I'm glad that everyone likes the slideshow. We plan to make it much more professional this up comming year and have plans for a couple additional projects with all the photos. :)

Regards, Bryan
