Team 3785 Gila Monster Introduction Thread

Hello All!

I'm the lead mentor for the Yuma Community Team (Team 3785), the GILA MONSTERS!

I'm creating this thread to introduce the team, and as an assignment to our new Gila Monster team members. Thier assignment is to introduce themselves in this forum and what they expect to achieve this year. Please use your initials to sign, so I know who you are.

Ok, now to introduce the team. We're a 2nd year veteren team, in Yuma, AZ. Last year, our rookie year, we started two weeks before kickoff. We were all new, and didn't know much about robots. 3 months later we came home with the Quality Award at the AZ Regional.

This year we're planning ahead, and starting the teaching process sooner by partnering with the local community college and started a class for the high school students to learn about FIRST and robots. We'll go over last years robot, and add the things we wanted to do for LOGOMOTION. This should be a great prep for next years game, and get the creative juices flowing.

So, with that, join me in introducing the 2012 Gila Monsters! We're ready for the 2012 season!

I have mixed feelings about having a "new" team called the Gila Monsters from Arizona. But I'm a grumpy old man who's early memories of FRC are colored by watching Team 64 (The Gila Monsters from Mesa, AZ) absolutely dominate the NASA/VCU Regional in 2001.

I believe there is a relation and that is the reason for the name reuse.

Welcome to team 3785! Whatever your team name, have fun and learn something new everyday. Have a great year.

Welcome to the Club 3785. It's still a bit weird for me to commit 3000+ numbers to memory. Heck, when I first started, 800/900 were still considered high.

It seems like this issue is becoming more and more common - but in the grand scheme of things, is any team the same after 10 years? High School Cycles, Job-turnover and time itself often change a team greatly in a span as short as 3 to 4 years. Realistically, a name is nothing more than a name.

Would a Chief Delpha by any other name still be as inspirational? (Answer is yes, it is called Wings of Fire)

Re: Team 3785 Gila Monster Introduction Thread

Welcome, 3785! I think it's totally acceptable to use the name ONLY if they do the Gila Monster dance. It was awesome and intimidating all at the same time.

Seriously, though, it's silly to think there's ownership of a name, especially from a defunct team. There's multiple Blue Lightnings out there. Also multiple CHAOSes. The last time I saw a certain visiting mentor we were trying to convince him to call his new robot Chief Delphi, because, well, no one is using that name right now.

Although somewhat important, there are really more important aspects to a team than their name. Try to keep it unique in your general geographic area and time period and you should be ok.

TL;DR: Gila! Gila! Gilagilagila! Best of luck to you in 2012.

The following posts in last year's Arizona regional thread gives a little history of the new Gila Monsters, for those who are interested. http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...9&postcount=46

Yes, they do the Gila dance.

Yes, they do Gila dance.

It's cool to see them take over the name and legacy. I think they have a rightful claim to the name, and I wish you guys the best of luck!

Thanks everyone!

Yes, we are the indirect descendants of the original Team 64 Gila Monsters. We brought the name back since our team is also based from the GM Desert Proving Grounds and mentored by GM employees. We're bringing the legacy with us, and doing the reborn/revamp thing that seems to be popular right now.

As you can see, we're doing some good things. We won the quality award with a completely rookie team, which is awesome! We got some returning students and new students, so we're gunning for the gold this year!

As for our purpose this semester, our goal is to learn to do the things we didn't have time for last year. Things like autonomous, different methods of movement, and more involvement with the community.

By that logic, all pie should cost $8.54. Afterall, pi*e=8.54...Also, I tend to only like e when I'm working on the logs. We weren't discussing woodwork though, we were discussing pastries. I'll definitely keep my dessert without the logs in it. You can enjoy your cyprus pie though. I'll stick with chocolate, thank you very much.

Learning how to develop alternative solutions to given engineering problems through robotics will be fun! Ultimate objective, however, is to learn and understand "Gracious Professionalism", "Coopertition", and "Working in Teams".
Good luck!

Hello everyone, another mentor for Team3785 here checking in.

I am helping out with the mechanical aspects of the robot team this year.

Hopefully this fall semester will allow us to get a jump start on next year's game and get more people interested/ involved with FIRST.

Sean, Yes 2001 was a very good year for the Gila Monsters, one of our rare trips to the East Coast.

This may have been answered already but the primary sponsor of those "Gila Monsters" Team 64 and these "Gila Monsters" Team 3785 is the same. The General Motors Desert Proving Ground. We moved from our Mesa, AZ location to Yuma, AZ and have resurrected the team here in Yuma.

We have a great group of new mentors/engineers involved for the first time in FIRST hence the rookie number from last year. Also awesome mix of students from the local high schools blended to make what we believe will do justice to the Gila Monster name and heritage. ::safety::

The bolded letters may give you a hint how the original Gila Monster students came up with the Gila Monster name back in 1998.

Don, 2002 was a good year for the Gila Monsters, with Bionic Bulldogs and 144 at Epcot. Seems like there were alot of good years for Gila Monsters - and now they're coming on strong again!

Welcome Back to our beloved Gila Monsters!

We were a part of the original Gila Monsters and were so sad to see the end of the team. Awesome to see the Gila's live again!!! :D

We're not participating as mentors or team members these days on any team sadly because our daughter who was a part of the team had an accident, and she's suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. We'll be there in spirit rooting for you!

Go Gila, Gila, Gila, Gila, Gila!!!!!

Incidentally we have an old Gila video on our YouTube channel if you haven't seen it, or a little reminiscing for the mentors from GM!- Hi Guys (Larry and Larry Larry send a BIG Hello!)
