Think simple, not complex. Team names are more than just really cool sayings, but they define your team and its style.

"Band of Techs" or "Band of Techies" is pretty cool in and of itself, and you don't need the extra ridiculous or obscure, because that's what adding those two words feels like. You'll still get the anagram "Bot" if you feel you need it.

Good luck on picking a name for your team.

This. The best team names are unique, memorable, and easily pronounced by the game announcer. (The latter is the achilles heel of Los Pollos Locos...if I had a nickel for every time I've had an announcer pronounce Pollos (where the two Ls become a Y) as pole-os, I could buy a pizza.) Bonus points if you can shout it at the top of your lungs easily, which Band of Techies would certainly do well.

When we were brainstorming for a team name, I wanted to think of something that was regionally identifiable, whimsical, and easy to remember. Our team is from Michigan's U.P. and a popular name for people from this area is Yoopers. Combine that with something to give it a little ring and you've got yourself some Yooper Troopers.
The city we're from is Dollar Bay, MI, so there were a few money themed names floating around for a while. "Cash Money" and "Dollar Bills" both came up at some point I think, but the kids went crazy for Da Yooper Troopers, eh.

I like when people can add in something to make the team name personal. If you just go out and make your name the Robo-(animal) or Tech-(noun), people are going to lose you in the sea of other teams with similar names. Especially for a new team, you have to work on building up an image that lasts.

In fairness, it is possible to distinguish yourself in that group of Robo-X or Y Robotics...but everything else about your game had better be absolutely on point. (Consider Robowranglers and Bobcat Robotics, both of whom have two world championships under their belt.)

I can vouch for that. At the championships we were in the Galileo division with team 1261, who are also the Robolions. We actually ended up on the same alliance as each other in a qualification match, it was confusing.

For the record I like B.O.T better than R.O.B.O.T, but hey, its your team's name, so you decide.

Well, in the AZ regional, the team most remembered by all the freshmen was TECHBOT, a team from Mexico (don't remember the number). In fact, we still have a flag or two hanging around in our storage closet.

to the OP: Do you guys play instruments?

Our team is in that state where more or less everybody is new, and the name of the "Aztec/Robot Pirates" is, well, not that appealing. In the past, we have had names like the Flaming Gears and Aztec Ninjas, but those were changed after a year as well. (I personally liked the Flaming Gears! We had a really cool shirt.) However, if you do a quick internet search for "robot pirates", you will get a funny flash animation, and team 2388's website. So I guess we need to change our name, becasue they signed up for it before we did.

Because we are very afilliated with our school we need to keep Aztecs in our name somehow. Currently, the best runner up is AZtec (for Arizona Technology).

This is also a good way to come up with a team name. Many school sports teams will use the "school name" for the sports team. It's unifying. It puts all the sports together under one name. And that's what my high school did as well. Our school is the "Liverpool Warriors". But Warriors can be done over and over, so we became The Arctic Warriors.

There are many teams out there named "The _____ Warriors", but only one is the Arctic Warriors. And the uniqueness of simply being Arctic shines though in our imagery. Plus, it has helped us become memorable within the school. If we were the "RoboCats" (no offense to any RoboCats out there) our school higher-ups might not look at us all too often or see us as a part of the school activities.

I would suggest any team looking for a new name to start at their high school's "names" for sports teams. Even if you don't pick that name, it's a good start.

Did you intentionally misspell these words? Not sure that would be "cool".
