Dewatt Motor Legality?

Hi.
My team is contemplating the use of Dewatt Drill Motors on a prototype robot arm, because of the motors' position-locking capabilities when unpowered. Is this motor legal in the FIRST FRC competition?

The motor hasn't been legal in the past, but the Dewalt gearbox probably will be legal this coming season.

2011 rules only allowed specific motors. Mortals will find out what motors allowed for 2012 at kick off. 2011 did not prohibit adapting Dewalt gear boxes to legal motors.

Re: Dewatt Motor Legality?

Many teams in the past have used the Dewalt transmissions in conjunction with FRC legal motors (CIM, globe(not legal any more))
You might look up a thread about Nothing but Dewalts...
It shows some directions on modifying those transmissions to use with the CIM..

The Dewalt drill motors don't have any inherent locking ability... it is in the transmissions...

good luck!!

OK Mark, what do you know that the rest of us don't?

Probably nothing we don't know. What Mark wrote seems plausible based on the past.

You're right, I re-read Mark's post and realize he says the motors were illegal in the past but the gearboxes will probably be legal next season. Didn't catch that the first time. :o
