2012 FRC Designs CAD Challenge

With less than three weeks until the start of the 2012 FRC season, FRC Designs is presenting a challenge to all FRC Teams:

Make a commitment to design your robot in CAD and submit your design to FRC Designs.

Computer Aided Design (CAD) is a useful tool that allows your team to design, prototype, and create your entire robot. For examples of full robot and subsystem CAD, check out the FRC Designs website. There are three main CAD software programs including Autodesk Inventor, Solidworks, and Pro E.

The goal of FRC Designs is to create a continuous improvement of competition among teams in future FRC competitions. This collaborative effort will give teams the ability to innovate on solutions that have been successfully used in previous competitions.

Will your team commit to FRC Designs? Please reply to this thread to show your commitment and thoughts about FRC Designs.

We designed our robot a bit backwards actually. We made the robot, and now we're getting the CAD people to mock it up in CAD. It's not the best way of doing these things, but we're using this year as our learning year for CAD.

Our cad is coming along great we are doing a great job for our First year :)

Thats what I did my first year when I was teaching myself CAD. Even if its not "the right way" to do it, the experience will make the CADing go faster next year. Additionally, documenting the design for after ship day (or bag day now I guess) can come in handy if you decide to use your holdback allowance to retrofit something and need to know what the dimensions were.

Thanks for the question! Due to the rush of build and competition season, there is no official deadline for submissions. I will update the site as they come in! Also, I would love to add a link to Inventor Publisher videos if they have already been put online (Ex: Youtube). Thanks!

Just a note to teams who use Inventor:

Inventor Publisher is nice, but if you want an actually good looking render (and one that doesn't crash every 10 minutes), try Autodesk Showcase. It looks MUCH better than Inventor, and is free if your school buys the suite. Might even be free to FRC teams, too.

I might finish our robot in the next couple weeks. Trying to collect models of a few missing components if they still exist. The fact that I'm trying to put in almost every single thing isn't really helping this time line.
