This cracks me up.
Also, it's one of the most realistic CAD models I've ever seen.
Props for a beautiful render.

Powered by Arc Reactor?

It also uses pancake motors.

It'd be a lot better if it didn't have mecanums

Don't forget the insulation for the Crio. What a great job rendering! Very nice detail.

Re: pic: Minimalist Robot Concept

Where did you find the CAD for the new cRIO? I haven't been able to find one anywhere, despite the fact that our team already has 2 of the physical units :/

Tom Ore 20-12-2011 11:59

Re: pic: Minimalist Robot Concept

The render was done it Creo (formerly known as Pro/E.)

We built the cRIO model ourselves. We guessed at some dimesions based on the old cRIO and scaled photographs posted on CD. On Tuesday, we got our cRio so we measured it and adjusted all the dimensions.

I did a render with just the cRIO but it looked kinda sad and lonely by itself. On a whim, I stuck wheels under it.

I think you are using to many wheels

Can you please post a .step of the 4 Slot cRIO? I guarantee the CD community would thank you greatly.

I have already added it to our teams part library. I did a bit of searching on the NI website. You can find the cRio on the NI website search for cRIO-9075

I will get a link when I find it again.

You call that minimalist? With no weight-reduction holes drilled into the chassis?

Nice, and thanks for the cRio link.

Re: pic: Minimalist Robot Concept

Spread the chassis rails apart so the cRio can drop between them. That way the robot will work upside down and right side up......

Not enough wheels....

Mecanum wheels don't work very well upside down.

The main reason we built our own model was to reduce the size. Last year, the 8 slot cRIO model was 73MB and it was imported so it couldn't be modified easily. I downloaded the 4 slot cRIO from your link and it's 41MB. It is a native Pro/E model so maybe it could be defeatured. The model shown in the render is only 6MB.

EDIT: The part file on the NI site is just for the commercial version of Pro/E.

If my understanding of Mecanums is correct they work fine, just not quite the same. An upside-down toggle could be implemented to change the code (like it was on many battlebots) and driving should continue as normal.

Nope. If upside-down mecanum wheels are approximately in a square, the robot won't be able to turn in place under its own power, and it will be easily spun by pushing it.

This bot looks like it's quite a bit out-of-square, so it would be possible to generate some rotational torque when upside down.

See page2 of this PDF.

The proposal was to move the wheels out and make room for the cRIO between the gearboxes. That would have made it quite a bit more square.

I love this about FIRST - even something that started out as pure silliness can turn into a legitimate discussion.
