CowScout Showcase: Data Entry / Scout Master

www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6nErAMiRl0

Hi all,
In this video we demonstrate CowScout's electronic data entry and approval system. CowScout automatically assigns teams for users to scout. Scouting data is then presented to a lead scout, who checks it for errors and approves, edits, or deletes it.

For example, six users with iPads go to the data entry page and are assigned teams. When a user submits new data, they are assigned a new team to scout and the data is sent to the lead scout. The lead scout approves the data and it is added to the team's collection of statistics.

Please, feel free to share any feedback you have.

See you at the competition!

This software looks great and I can see it being very useful. I have spent some time looking into developing something similar but some key questions come up right away.

1. How do you handle communication between Ipads and the database?
2. How reliable is the connection?

This program looks more in-depth than the program I use at work that maintains a warehouse and thousands of products.

Can't wait to try it out!

The scouting program is a web app. So you would need to have internet access to use the program.

Is Cowscout something we can run on our own server?

Re: CowScout Showcase: Data Entry / Scout Master

No, we are choosing to keep CowScout centralized.

Yes we cant get wifi at one of our events so we arent going to be using cowscout. If we could have it to run on our own server we would use it.
But oh well:)

I would like to use CowScout for 2338. Is there any way to use it without wireless internet?

Considering CowScout, currently using Google Docs. Has anyone had negative experiences with Docs?

do you need WIFI to use this great scouting tool

Re: CowScout Showcase: Data Entry / Scout Master

Some sort of internet access is required to use CowScout. We plan on running a 2.4ghz wifi network (off of a 4G LTE modem), which won't interfere with the field's 5ghz network.

I've used Docs for a few years now. You need internet access to use Docs just as you need internet for CowScout. You can also do more with your information in Docs.

What are going to be the fields for scouting data this year?

I'm considering using CowScout. I like the features it has, but I need to make sure it has space for all the things we care about in each game.

EDIT: Is there a freeform text field for additional comments? We use a lot of qualitative properties when picking teams and constructing match strategies. Often there's something that just doesn't fit into the numerical fields.

For example there were some teams that didn't drive straight enough in autonomous and so they'd crash into us. We'd have to plan it so we didn't interfere with each other, and we'd know if that was an issue by looking at the comments on the scout sheets. It's not enough just to know whether their auton scores or not, but *how* it scores.

Also I'm assuming that we can't see data entered by other teams and vice versa. Is that correct?

Is there a reason that cowscout can't load the match results and rankings of from todays events? I was hoping to see what cowscout could do with this...

Would it be possible for someone to upload a screenshot of the CowScout match scouting page for those of us with later regionals?

Warning about internet access at events:

Per the FRC Administrative Manual (Section 4 At the Events):
Section 4.3.1 Robot Wireless Control:
  • Robots may be operated via wireless control only on the competition fields and the practice field with the FIRST supplied radio; and
  • Teams are not allowed to set up their own 802.11a/b/g/n (2.4GHz or 5GHz) wireless communication (access points or ad-hoc networks) in the venue
  • Note that a wireless hot spot created by a cellular device would be considered an [/i]access point, and thus not allowed
An even more restrictive rule regarding internet access at events is found here:
Section 4.15 Site Restrictions:

Please read the following common site restrictions and adhere to them in order to promote an orderly, safe, pleasant and exciting competition. Please refer to Section 4.2 of this manual section for additional site restrictions at your event.

  • Do not bring food to the site. If you bring food, do not bring it onto the property.
  • Do not use noisy devices, such as floor stompers, whistles and/or air horns.
  • Do not arrange for Internet access or phone lines on the site or attempt to connect to the Internet.
  • Do not sell any products. This includes food, hats, shirts or any promotional products.
  • Do not distribute any food products, such as candy, water, soft drinks or fruit.
  • Do not sell raffle tickets.
  • Do not bring bottled gas tanks (e.g. helium). This is a safety concern.
  • Do not use walkie-talkies.
  • Do not invite or bring live bands to play in the audience. This dilutes the presentation on the playing field and is too loud and confusing for the audience.
  • Do not play loud music in the Pit because it interferes with important announcements. If a team receives more than a warning or two, the power to the team pit will be shut off and/or the music confiscated.
  • Do not form "tunnels" during the Awards Ceremony. This can cause discomfort to those traveling through them and creates safety issues.
Emphasis on the rule forbidding internet access is mine.

Whether FIRST can enforce this is an entirely different matter. (i.e. is browsing on a smart phone prohibited?).

P.S. CowScout is an awesome tool. It's unfortunate that it appears it's use at events may not be allowed per the letter of FRC rules.

Do not attempt to connect to the internet? Wow... I suppose my phone is breaking this rule every 5 minutes when it checks for new e-mail.

I'm guilty as charged as well. I need to stay on top my day job. If I have to walk outside the arena to check e-mail, I'll do it.

I really don't see this as a strictly enforceable rule. But neither is "Stop Work" day.
