However, I think torque is super important considering the lenient defensive rules. Gotta be able to counter defend.

Yeah, but with most all of the 7-9 strategies we have planned out, our robot isn't going to have much robot-on-robot action. It will have sufficient torque to do some pushing, however We plan on be passively defensive, or T-boning teams, since most of them won't be able to defend that way.

Our "special" wheels will help, too, as standard traction wheels won't get as much grip as them. ;)

A transmission is like a gearbox. You put motors into it and it adjusts the speed of the motors that go to the wheels. Normally, it's just the one motor speed, however there are certain advanced ones that can make 2 different speeds.

Think of a car and how when traveling at low speeds the engine can rev at high rpm's, and at higher speeds the engine can rev at lower rpm's.

Some teams take this concept and use it for their drive trains. Its very useful because it allows for higher speeds and more maneuverable control than a single-speed.
