Woodie Flowers Questions

As you may or may not know our coach of our small team past away the beginning of this school year. He dedicated so much time to the team we would like to submit A Woodie Flowers Nomination in his honor. So the question is would it be allowed to make the Woodie Flowers submission in his honor?

Jaxon,
This is question for First directly. I would suspect that they might point to this rule...

6.10.3 Award Eligibility Requirements

Regional WFFA (except District Event Teams) – Each team may nominate one adult member from their team for the WFFA. The adult mentor must be on the same team as the student nominators and only one adult member may be nominated per team. Previous year WFFA recipients are not eligible to receive the current year WFFA.

I think it is very thoughtful to nominate someone who made a difference in your life.

Team 1126 submitted their WFFA at FLR last year in honor of a mentor who passed away. The person you submit may not be eligible to win, but I don't think there's anything preventing you from trying.

If Heath Ledger can be nominated for an Oscar while dead, I do not see why your could not be nominated for this. But, as Al said, check with FIRST first. It is ultimately their decision.

The answer is YES it will be considered for the award!

Team 1108(from Paola, KS) had a founding team mentor pass away, he was very influential to all of us in the Greater Kansas City area. My cousin actually still wears his safety glasses.

They submitted him for Woodie Flower's in 2010 at the Dallas Regional and WON. If you need any more information or want to talk to them sent me a pm and I'll get you in touch. I cannot remember if they have anyone on cd.

GO ahead and just try it. You can't win without trying.

Everyone,
You all have mentors who meet or exceed the WFFA requirements and are great adult team members. Wouldn't you want to know for sure before you make your submission that it will be considered. Take the time to make the call or ask the question on the Q&A.

The Woodie Flowers Award is a great honor. If protocol doesn't allow you to submit the nomination, you could also submit for an Unsung FIRST Hero here on CD: http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/ufh.php?

Minor correction: we nominated beloved mentor Leon Cormier for the WFFA at the 2009 Finger Lakes Regional.

The premise still holds true though. Whether or not the mentor is eligible to win, the act of nominating him is incredibly respectful.
