"Mini" 4-Claw Gripper Video

We designed a 4-claw gripper & fabricated it at 1:4 scale using a 3D printer. The test ball is a little large (7" instead of 6") but seems to work okay. http://youtu.be/FoE1ImP0pQI

A center poppet...

Re: Vacuum Pickup

Thanks for all the great tips. We've found large diameter (=>10") vacuum cups online, but they seem to be for flat surfaces.

We have access to a 3D printer. In past years we've made molds with it &...

Re: Vacuum Pickup

There really isn't a "range". We have to make contact with the ball to get a seal. Alignment will be a challenge (as with any floor pick-up device). Perhaps v-shaped guides on the front of the bot?...

Re: Vacuum Pickup

Yeah, having our robot kick itself to death would be entertaining for the spectators, but won't help us win any matches.

A kicker might work. Or swing the ball up & drop it in a catapult.

Vacuum Pickup

Here's a quick test we did using a cut-down bucket left over from our 2013 Frisbee hopper: http://youtu.be/tPNvIXTAd4s

Obviously we couldn't use a 110VAC shop vac, but we could connect a legal motor...

Re: Need a source for very large work bench

Guys (and gals) who build airplanes in their garages also need sturdy flat workbenches. Here's a good video & plans link: http://dreambuildfly.com/2010/08/building-workbenches/

Re: [FRC Blog] Kickoff Broadcast and Game Hint Redux

Maybe it's an adaptation of 43-Man Squamish?

Last year our team leader bought a couple large cylinders "just in case". We didn't use them, but maybe they'll work in our design this year. :D...

Re: Kickoff Time

We wish we could travel to the SC regional Kickoff event, but funds are very tight this year & we'd rather save the money for traveling to regional competitions in the spring.

I'm sure there are...

Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint

Like Dean Kamen, Sir James Dyson is an inventor (cyclone vacuum cleaners & bladeless fans), entrepreneur & philanthropist. Maybe Dean did some of his legendary persuading & got James to donate "Air...

Re: [FRC Blog] 2014 Game Hint

That's Duane Cole, one of the most famous aerobatic pilots in the 1960s. Two facts might be relevant: His simple Taylorcraft was much lighter than a typical aerobatic aircraft. And he flew inverted...

Re: Kickoff Time

It seems odd that FIRST hasn't posted the webcast times, with the Kickoff just over 2 weeks away.

Re: Team Kickoff Meeting

Does anyone have an actual link showing the FIRST webcast times?

I've "heard" it's from 10:30-11:30, but I can't find anything confirming that on the FIRST web site.

Re: 2014 Game

Four years ago the FIRST Tech Challenge used wiffleballs for "HotShot". Their field is much smaller (12' square) but that year they also had scoring tubs outside of the playing field.

In this video...

Re: 2014 Game

Yup. But with some type of playing element to knock the bucket stack over. Maybe a bowling ball, like the 2012 FTC game?
