Re: 2013 Safety Animation
A few other teams had outstanding entries from a visual standpoint, but the Adambots entry had a great message that was very relevant to safety at the competitions. I think that's what the judges...

Re: Linear Actuator for Lifting
Yup, and you can use a Bimba cylinder to build your own linear actuator. It probably won't be as precise as a COTS linear actuator, but you don't need precise to climb pipes. ;)

Re: Linear Actuator for Lifting
Rule R78 in Section 4 states you can use a pneumatic cylinder. A linear actuator is just a guided pneumatic cylinder, so I think you're okay.
However it might be difficult to find one with enough...

Re: Linear Actuator for Lifting
A linear actuator is a commercial off the shelf (COTS) item, so it should be okay, as long as you use an approved motor on it (Table 4-1), and the "fair market value" does not exceed $400 (Rule...

Aquiring SolidWorks software?
How long does it take SolidWorks to send software to FIRST teams? We filed out the online request form (http://www.solidworks.com/sw/education/robot-student-design-contest.htm) over 3 weeks ago, but...

Re: No Safety Animation Award?
GOOD NEWS! According to the FRC Blog (http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/blog), FIRST is working on a revised Safety Manual and soon will release that, and announce the Safety Animation...

Re: 2013 Safety Animation
GREAT NEWS!
FIRST hasn't forgotten about the Safety animation contest. This was just posted on the FRC blog (http://www.usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/frc/blog):

Re: Belt vs Chain drive efficiency
I assume the testing was done on new/clean drive systems. Synchronous belts start having an efficiency advantage as chains & sprockets become worn & dirty.
A couple years ago at an off-road bicycle...

Re: Safety Manual
It seemed odd that at the Kickoff there was no mention of safety, or where to find the manual. And they didn't announce the winner of the safety animation contest (as they had done in previous...

Re: 2013 FRC Kickoff Discussion
Autodesk canceled the Design Excellence Award just a few weeks before the Kickoff, and FIRST ignored the Safety Animation contest.
So far, this hasn't been a good year for animation teams. :(

No Safety Animation Award?
Does anyone know who won the Safety Animation contest?
Usually FIRST announces it during their Kickoff broadcast.

Re: Water Buildup in Pneumatic System?
There are some tiny parts in a solenoid valve. I hope you were very careful about cleaning them, just as though you were working in an operating room (maybe surgical masks are overkill). Perhaps a...

Re: 2013 ACTUAL game hint!!!
It's been 5 years since the game used giant balls (FIRST Overdrive (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FIRST_Overdrive)).
I wonder if the End Game might involve lifting a large ball up high (8'?) and...
