Re: I want to be an FTA

I would say this is true of most of the key volunteer positions. 99% of the time as an LRI, I'm there as a resource for my inspectors to use. Across the past 5 years (11 events where I was the LRI...

Re: pic: Quick-Change Chassis 2

Also, in situations where you expect significant stress (like a drive train involved in robot-robot pushing matches, or sudden shocks from big impacts), it's actually preferable to have some give in...

Re: Dean's List Advice

I would treat the Dean's List interview just like a job interview. And that's hard for most high schoolers, as you don't have the experience of interviewing for professional jobs!

In interviews,...

Re: Dean's List Advice

I would start by asking them why they haven't been nominating someone. Then explain why you feel nominating someone would be beneficial to the team.

I've written the nominations for my team for the...

Re: I want to be an FTA

100% false. I've worked with quite a few college aged students in other roles to train them towards becoming a key volunteer here in MN. Just ask the Bison Robotics group... They brought over 30...

Re: I want to be an FTA

The FTA is probably the role with the most responsibility at the regional - everything runs through them. After that it's the Head Ref and LRI... both of those positions are linked from the pages...

Re: Mentors Role

My team's Mentor Expectations:

Of course, your team may handle things differently. I recommend looking towards your mentors, and try to act the same way they do. Do they get super involved with...

Re: Better material shopping list for field element build

I think this is the biggest reason why FIRST doesn't publish a single complete list. Teams are widely different, and depending on how you tackle the game you may only build a portion of the field. ...

Re: Can't add attachments

I'm with GeeTwo on this... it would be much better to post your code someplace that is designed for hosting code, like GitHub, and then just post a link to it here. Just posting it here means you're...

Re: Tool list .rookie team

Two recommendations:

List your team number in your profile! There's a spot to list it specifically, and that not only lists it under your name when you post, but creates a link to the...

Re: Pockets on Women's Pants

A lot of time URLs like that get created due to people using search forms (the same thing happens on Amazon). Just remove the ? and everything after it - you get to the same page, but don't have all...

Re: Northern MN robotics hub

I recommend regular, free-form meetings among mentors and/or student leadership during the season. The Roseville area hub mentors meet every Saturday morning at a local Perkins, before all of our...

Re: New AndyMark Product Game Hint???

My team has actually been playing with these this fall... I wanted something challenging for them to prototype around, and these fit the bill when I saw them. At Target. First prototype shooter went...

Re: LOGO search...

Seeing as you have your location listed as MN, I'd be happy to take a look at any proposed team name/logo and let you know how likely you are to run into something similar in the state. I've been...

Re: Meeting Schedule

I would say the first key is respecting the schedule. If everyone agrees on 4-6:30, then actually get done at 6:30. Your mentors have lived and families, and do need some time away from the team. ...

Re: Would it be a Penalty?

I'm having trouble visualizing a mechanism that could be used for righting a fallen robot that wouldn't risk damaging said robot. With the wide variety of designs, just about any mechanism that is...

Re: Alternative to foul points: extra time?

While I personally hate when fouls decide matches, there are some benefits to them.

I've seen refs talk about penalties to make sure they got the right call - it's easy for the scorekeepers to...

Re: Senior Design Projects

It's just so amazing to think of how products have come up to serve the FIRST community over the years. There never used to be gear boxes, drive trains, or chassis designed for FIRST robots. ...

Re: [FRC Blog] FIRST Choice 2017

It's not that confusing. Let's say there were 700 teams that wanted all of the control system stuff. They all out the PDP's and VRM's on there at 1 each. They also put talons on their list at 4...

Re: Political Issues within Team

We handle it all through the team handbook - there's a list of student expectations (13 of them) and a list of mentor expectations (9 of them) included, and really those expectations define the...

I can add that, as far as my team goes, those two issues are no where to be seen. For us, we have established rules in our handbook that lay out the requirements to travel with the team. If you...

Re: Getting donated meeting space?

We spent 6 years in a building downtown before being able to move in to our school. It started our second year as a team - one of the other mentors knew a guy that had previously worked for the same...

In the past, I've usually gotten round 1 before Christmas, and round 2 within a week of it closing.

Re: Registration 2017

I don't think you can conclude that just yet. We're still missing all the Israeli teams, which should have a significant impact on the 299 missing vets we currently have. Mark's bar graph is the...
