Re: Michigan State Championship 2017 Dates

The dates of competitions for next year haven't been posted yet, except for Champs... mostly because most of them don't have signed contracts yet! We'll probably see them start to get posted in the...

Re: [FRC Blog] The 2016 Season, by the Numbers 2

I tried something similar to identify my team... and came up with 0 rows. I started with year and language, then filtered out by motor controllers and pneumatics I can't find any row for 2007...

Re: [FRC Blog] The 2016 Season, by the Numbers 2

This actually doesn't surprise me very much. Java is the language used for the AP Computer Science exam, and thus the option that is probably taught in schools the most. I'm sure many teams made...

Re: [FRC Blog] The 2016 Season, by the Numbers 2

I think the key to this is figuring out how to make tuning the PID loops easier. We've been using encoders and potentiometers with PID loops for years, yet it still takes our programming team a...

Re: [FRC Blog] The Woodie Flowers Award and Two FRC Championships

Here in MN, we have a "mentor parade" immediately prior to the WFFA. The mentors all group according to years of service, and walk in a parade across the field, wrapping around it at the end. Then...

Re: [FRC Blog] Radio Silence

I don't know if FIRST has actually told us if the firmwares are different. I would hope they would be the same, in the interest of letting us test at home in as close to a competition manor as...

Re: [FRC Blog] Radio Silence

I would say it's a top priority for our use... but for a vast majority of use cases, a boot time of 30 seconds versus one of 90 really doesn't make that much of a difference. When you're sitting at...

Re: Team Domains

For the past 10 years, we've had our own domain, hosted by an external company. There has been talk of bringing it "in house" and onto the school's server, but nothing has actually happened in that...

Re: Districts in Texas proposal sent to FIRST

This statement confuses me greatly. How is 2 days of competition greater than 3? Sure, we get fewer qualification matches, but more practice matches. Heck, there have been years when my team has...

Re: [FRC Blog] The Woodie Flowers Award and Two FRC Championships

I don't like it either, but at Champs Woodie told us the insane number of essays they had to read through this year... It's a lot of work for the past WFA winners to get through all of that. ...

Re: [FRC Blog] The Woodie Flowers Award and Two FRC Championships

I don't think it would be terrible to give the award to two individuals (lord knows there are enough outstanding mentors out there that deserve it!)... but you still have a question of logistics. ...

Re: [FRC Blog] The Woodie Flowers Award and Two FRC Championships

They don't even need to get that tricky about it. Just do what they do for Dean's List currently, and get in touch with all nominated mentors directly. Or, if you want to allow teams to keep it a...

Re: Districts in Texas proposal sent to FIRST

Or, as is common when two legal entities are attempting to come to a contractual agreement, the details won't be made public until after the agreement is signed. It's not a question of transparency,...

Re: [FRC Blog] An official LEGO set for FIRST STRONGHOLD? SQUEEE!!!!

At one of the events I was at, I remember a team that had a lamented print of the field, with movable (magnetic with a backing on the page, maybe?) 3-D printed defenses. Totally awesome.

Re: The negative effects of FRC

I agree with Alan on this... Every event I've been to almost all of the teams have passed reinspection before alliance selection. That includes the 60-63 team events in MN, as well as 75-100 team...

Re: The negative effects of FRC

The stress thing is something students deal with all the time, and it's not just robotics related. Back in the day, my school didn't have a FIRST team, otherwise I would have been on it (they do now...

Re: Is Magnesium ok?

This would have me concerned with respect to machining in the pits... Could I just pick up any old drill and start punching holes in it without any risk of it catching fire? What about cutting a bit...

Re: How to Get New Members to Stay?

From my experience, the perceived maturity of any group of people can be greatly affected by a small group of individuals. You'll have classes come through that have one or two "troublemakers", and...

Re: How to Get New Members to Stay?

I have to agree with this. However, there are different ways to approach safety that can be more or less fun. One year, we went a little overboard... watched videos on safe shop usage, had a rather...

Re: Is it legal to make a custom slip ring?

The question is... Are two connectors each rated for 30A, placed in parallel, gauged correctly for a 40A branch circuit? I could make an argument in either direction. It really would need a GDC...

Re: How to Get New Members to Stay?

First off, why are the 2014 game pieces out and available? All game pieces from previous years should be stuck in a closet and locked up, unless being used for build/demo. If you give a kid a toy,...

Re: Is it legal to make a custom slip ring?

It looks like you can get the MW1430 for around $55. It has 4 contacts, each rated for 30A... what about running the contacts in parallel? This is something I would want to ask the GDC before...

Re: How to Get New Members to Stay?

Chris is Me has it right - people are less likely to leave if they get heavily involved doing something they like. And with robotics, that means strong mentorship that constantly pulls people...
