Re: 2016 Minnesota Robotics Invitational
8 alliances is 24 teams + backups, or 32 if you do 4 team alliances. Should everyone present make it into the playoffs? Plus, the more teams you have in the playoffs, the longer they take. A...

Re: Registration 2017
The problem is the big crush of people - they need increased availability for about an hour. Set 1st district and 1st regional registration on different days (even 1 day apart) and you'll cut the...

Re: STEM vs. STEAM
As another interesting tidbit... I went to lookup the origin of STEM, and it turns out that there are a dozen different acronyms for it. Originally, it was METS.
Anyways, while doing so, I noticed...

Re: STEM vs. STEAM
I think everyone has, so far, focused on what's contained in STEM and STEAM. But to me, I want to know what the purpose of the acronyms are.
Why are we concerned with STEM? The general argument...

Re: Robot Cart
The problem is, there's no "one size fits all" solution to carts. Every robot is different in its length and width, wheel positions, or preferred frame support positions, which makes it really hard...

Re: How do you fund your big machinery purchases?
A few years back my team's school built a STEM center addition onto the school. These sorts of additions are fairly expensive, so it actually wasn't that big of a deal to sneak a few thousand (ok,...

Re: Most Unlikely Places You've Found FRC People
I can think of two incidents that really apply:
1. At an interview. I have my volunteer stuff listed on my resume, and it turns out the manager had a son on one of the local area teams. Gave us a...

Re: Encoder Question / Recomendation
That's an interesting question. The easiest way is to have your programmers write a little test program (or debug code in your real program) that spits out what angle it thinks the arm is at. ...

Re: Encoder Question / Recomendation
programming is different. A potentiometer is an analog device. As you rotate the shaft, the voltage of the output changes incrementally. WPILib actually has a rather nice class...

Re: Encoder Question / Recomendation
for that use, I prefer a potentiometer, as it's the easiest for getting an absolute position reading out of. And if you set it up correctly, you can get it mounted without too much difficulty.
The...

Re: Is FIRST about Robot?
Striving for excellence is a part of every good team. But assuming that excellence means winning competitions is a very bad assumption. Just take a look at the record for the 2015 Championship...

Re: Is FIRST about Robot?
The robot is certainly important. But I don't think that's what FIRST is about. I had the benefit of seeing this thread right before going to the gym, so I had a good long time to think about it...

Before you get snarky, you might want to realize that I was replying to the content of your post, which was about DCMP, not district events in general. I've been around long enough to know how they...

You do realize that at DCMP, every team has already been through two events, so they've been inspected twice already and most of them are probably ready for inspection pretty quickly after they load...

Re: [FIRST EMAIL] Stop Build Day Survey
And that right there was my whole point. There are over 3000 teams in FIRST. Do we expect ALL of them to build two robots in order to try to "keep up" with, as you put it, the best of the best? ...
