Re: Announcing: Great Lakes Bay Bot Bash - 2014

Quick Update:

We currently have 12 teams registered to attend the Great Lakes Bay Bot Bash, and there's still several slots open for more.

If your team is looking for an off-season competition in...

Re: Experience With 6 Cim Drive train

We used 6-CIM ball shifters (with 2 CIMS and 1 MiniCIM each) on our robot this year. We had no problems with breakers when driving in low gear. There was one occasion that the main breaker was...

Re: Does your team charge a fee to join?

Years ago when our team was a bit bigger and before FiM reduced the cost of travel so drastically we had students pay their own travel costs but those costs could be offset by participation in a...

Re: pic: 303 Prototype Sheet Metal Drivebase

Honestly, the gear setup of this drive reminds me a bit of the one my team built this year. This is a slight variation on that design, which I've been working on in the off...

Re: pic: 303 Prototype Sheet Metal Drivebase

Without seeing an image of the gears more exposed it's difficult to give a good review of the system overall. Just looking at what is visible though it looks like the system would certainly run.

I...

Re: pic: Chassis Concept

Are the outer wheels powered? If so, by what?

Very clever gearbox integration into the drive base, certainly a space saver.

Re: Drivetrain Idea - "Box Drive"

Impressive, probably the most practical way to do that too.

Thanks for that link, it made my day. :)

Re: Drivetrain Idea - "Box Drive"

I actually thought of making a drive system like this, but doing it with traction wheels and have one set actuate up and down to change directions, a bit like some of the octocanum and similar drives...

Re: pic: 2 Ball auto rendering

Gorgeous render!

A few questions...

What program are you using?
How did you get the background in the image?
How long did it take to render?
What kind of system did you render it on?

Re: Pneumatic Restrictions & Improvments

Exactly, if the intent of the rule is to prevent two compressors being on the robot at once, then enforce that, but I can't think of any rational reason to prevent a team from using an external...

Re: Pneumatic Restrictions & Improvments

I don't recall FIRST ever banning them, just strongly recommending they be changed and offering replacements. Our team was offered replacements for our white tanks on our robot at all 3 of our...

Re: Bending Square aluminium tubing

For low-strength applications you could cut notches out of one side with a band saw (or whatever) and then bend it. We did that with some aluminum angle for the back support of our ball shooter back...

Re: Limiting Drivetrain Motors

We used a 6 motor drive train (4 CIMs, 2 Mini-Bike Motors) back in 2006 on a similarly open field with no bumpers on the robot. We also built the frame out of solid sheets of 3/16" aluminum, needless...

Re: New season, New tools

The thing with picking a first choice for a new machine really depends on the methods your team use (or plan to use) for construction.

Speaking from the perspective of a team that has all 4 of the...

Not sure what you mean by "sneaky", but I know our team has used Weebly for our website for the last several years and it's served us pretty well for a free host.

Mostly we've stuck with it because...

Re: VIAIR 250C-IG Compressor

Honestly, I'm still of the opinion there is no need to use a heat sink on the compressor if you're blowing fans over it. Unless you're running the compressor constantly and want to keep it at room...

Re: VIAIR 250C-IG Compressor

I don't think that adding a requirement like this is needed since the problem does not necessarily affect all legal compressors, or for that matter, even all usages of the compressor in question...

Re: VIAIR 250C-IG Compressor

I used a multimeter with a temperature probe on it to get the reading. Don't know if its the most accurate but it seemed to work well for comparison at least. As far as where the probe was placed, I...
