Re: Worst you've seen to the Defenses?
This pretty much describes every single wood-version Portcullis ever made. I don't think I've seen a single one that survived the whole build season intact (with the possible exception of ones that...

Re: pic: High Traction Drivetrain Concept
In my experience, these sort of drivetrains are susceptible to massive friction loss in a pushing match due to the effects of front-end lifting. For a visible (though somewhat extreme) example of...

Re: Possibility of a flying object?
Oh no... I had one of these when I was a kid, these would be an absolute nightmare for robots to manipulate (and they would get shredded)... please FIRST, anything but this.

Re: pic: Piston-in-Tube Concept
Generally, in my experience, these kinds of things are more for saving space than weight. Square tube is also much easier to mount things to.

Re: Possibility of a flying object?
It's an interesting idea but I doubt FIRST will be having teams building their own flying machines (drones, basically). There are a variety of reasons for this, if the drones were the only robot a...

Re: pic: Piston-in-Tube Concept
We did something like this back in 2011, but only the cylinder was in the tube, not the piston rod. Rather than using bearings we used linear slide rails on the mechanism it was actuating. Worked...

Re: STEM vs. STEAM
I tend to agree. Honestly I've long been of the opinion that adding Arts to STEM was more of a funding ploy than anything, seeing how it always seems like funding is being cut for Art programs, but...

Re: Laptop Advice
Too bad you didn't post this a week or two ago, Best Buy had a deal on a sweet Lenovo Yoga machine with an i7, solid state, and dedicated graphics for under $800 after a $150 student discount. All...

Re: As much as I hate to admit it...
You do know this thread was posted back in 2008, right? The OP hasn't been active since 2011.
Don't get me wrong, this thread does have some good info on it (albeit, with some broken links), but...

Re: [FIRST EMAIL] Stop Build Day Survey
District teams, at least at every district I've been to get practice matches. They just aren't scheduled.
At Districts in Michigan, Thursday nights, in addition to load-in and inspections, teams who...

Re: [FIRST EMAIL] Stop Build Day Survey
That is sort of a separate issue though. My response was more geared towards promoting FRC with people not familiar with it already.
All I'm saying is that if you did have unlimited access from...

Re: [FIRST EMAIL] Stop Build Day Survey
Even if you expanded the definition of the build period to the start of competition season (because at that point, your robot should likely be "built", maybe just not working perfectly yet) even if...

Re: [FIRST EMAIL] Stop Build Day Survey
Perhaps the result of this would be seeing the expansion of unofficial scrimmage events into the competition season? If you want more time to practice and iterate, there would be nothing stopping you...

Re: Looking for a 3D Printer
Thanks for the quick responses everyone!
I was aware of the extruder limitation on the R1 plus and the accuracy issues with the R1. I was under the impression that R1 plus corrected the accuracy...

Looking for a 3D Printer
I've been looking for a 3D printer for personal use for a few months now and figured I'd ask folks here on CD what their thoughts were.
A few things I'm looking for in a 3D printer (in order of...

Re: Build Spaces?
Does your school district have any buildings it isn't using? In my area, team 2619 operates out of an old elementary school under the stipulation that they keep the place clean (the school district...
