Testing is fun and you can learn a lot. Have you looked at the published ratings?

Re: Rivnut Tool
+1 for the PEM captive nuts. I use a lot of broach style and they are great. You can buy them from McMaster-Carr. https://www.mcmaster.com/#captive-nuts/=15l08yk
If you need large quantity I'd...

Re: Custom Gears to Fit with Tetrix Gears
Tetrix gears are actually 0.8 Mod (31.75 DP) 20 PA. 32 DP is close enough for most things, but be aware it could affect your center distance. 0.8 Mod is common in rc parts so that may help your...

Re: Pockets on Women's Pants
I suspect the belts are smaller. A few years ago I went shopping for a new framing belt and couldn't get the the one I really liked because I was too skinny. :o

Re: Pockets on Women's Pants
Pockets tend to wear out fairly quick holding tools. Most trades use utility belts, they hold more and are easier to organize. At the end of the day you take off your belt and everything is there for...

Re: Rigorous, scientific pocketing?
We call it swiss cheesing. Often it goes on the scale and gets the hole saw treatment until it's light enough. Nothing scientific. :ahh:
As the students design, cam, and shop skills have improved...

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears
If your interested in hobbing gears rather than milling them... you might want to look at this gem. He started out planning to make a mechanical linkage but instead used an encoder on his spindle...

Re: Who makes their own wheels?
It looks like a Harig Uni-Dex. http://www.harigmfg.com/unidex.html
Or a Harig GRIND-ALL No. 1. http://www.harigmfg.com/grindall1g.html
In grinding these are commonly called whirligigs. Unless your...

Re: New Mill - Help with tooling
Nice mill. Did you get a manual?
This page has some scans if not.

That mill used Brown and Sharp #9 (B & S #9) tooliong. Not as common as R-8. You'll...

Re: What are some of your shop tips and tricks?
Use countersink drills. Very rigid and you get the correct hole and countersink in one operation. We use a LOT of #10 screws and we've found that a drill depth of 0.465" is spot on for a new drill....

Re: Event Machine Shops
PNW District has a couple trailers that are used at most events. Auburn High School allowed us to use their very well tooled shop this year. We repaid the favor by fixing everything we could find to...

Re: Who makes their own wheels?
The version 2 of the wheel is downright cool. What a great basic cnc project. I would think machining them from something like birch plywood would prove very sturdy.
If some draft was designed in...

Re: Who makes their own wheels?
We used 2.5" 3D printed idler wheels on our track system this year. They held up better than expected and were very light weight. Our test wheels didn't have bearings and the later ones used 4 skate...

Re: Winch ratchet and pawl design
The ratchet and pawl was originally designed on the outboard side. After the spool was done, minus the counter bore, it was fitted to the motor and the designer realized the spool should be flipped....

Re: Mcmasters Brake and Clutch Lining
Most brake systems use disks or drums made of metal. I would imagine testing is done against steel or cast iron. Thicker lining is normally counter bored and riveted. Thinner materials are bonded...

Re: Very small torsion axles
We ordered some soft A50 and medium A70. We used the A50 because it was easier to work and appeared about right.

Re: Winch ratchet and pawl design
I like the wrench idea. I've seen a few other team use them. Not sure how we missed something so obvious in hindsight. The design and building of the ratchet and pawl made it worth it for the...

Re: Winch ratchet and pawl design
That is good to know. We discussed 3D printing the winch but had our reservations. As it was some were concerned about using aluminum for the ratchet. In the end the concerns were unfounded. Do you...

Winch ratchet and pawl design
This last season as I wandered around the pits I saw some really interesting winch designs. I figured I'd share the winch we used this year. During the design phase we looked at purchasing and modify...

rubber. We modeled the parts in solidworks and then estimated space required. We ended up facing the die about 20 thou to...
