Go to Post At every event I've seen this year, there has been at least one robot that left a part on the field. Even some of the robots have decided they don't want to play and this year and made a break for it in autonomous! :yikes: - ctt956 [more]

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

Thanks.

I re-wrote my python script to handle the gcode creation for using standard profile gear cutters on the 4th axis using just a few variables. My mod 0.8 set of cutters are HSS and 32mm in...

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

I don't think you can export or save in demo mode. I tried to post some g-code and got the license notice. Aside from that everything else appears to function.

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

Last fall we downloaded the demo of Gearotic http://www.gearotic.com/ and used it to verify the Tetrix gears we made but didn't really spend a lot of time using it. I've been looking at some of the...

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

It sounds like an interesting read.

I've cut a few gears using a hand ground fly cutter also.

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

Yes. For milling gears the set of 8 profile cutters is likely the easiest. I'd have to look but I think my code for cutting gears is only about 5 or 10 lines long. The formulas are easy enough to do...

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

I re-wrote the slitting saw code in python so I could generate some g-code to play with. This is neat stuff. The rendering is a bit odd looking because of the zero is on the outside edge of the blank...

Re: How does your CAD team work?

This is the method we use. One thing we did this season was to have the student that was going to machine the part sit down with the designer and check the part for machinabilty and fix stuff before...

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

Spent some time on the phone with some really nice folks at Sandvik. I learned a lot.

The Coromill 171 and 172 are profile inserts so you have the same 8 approximate involute shapes you'd find in a...

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

Thanks.

The slitting saw wouldn't be my first choice of course. but the code he's using to generate the path is fairly straight forward and should be easily adapted to any cutter.

I quickly tried...

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

I'm going down the gear cutting rabbit hole... I've been watching some of the Sandvik InvoMilling videos. Cool stuff for sure! Here's a simple spur...

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

Martin Model has the castings available based on Tom Hammond's patterns. They appear more robust than the original Jacob's castings. Ships from Oregon. 14 Piece Gear Hobber Casting Kit + Drawings...

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

Yeah, making a hobber would be a lot of work. Have you seen the Jacob's hobber? http://www.lathes.co.uk/jacobs/ Castings use to be available and you see variants now and again online. For small FRC...

Re: Cutting Tetrix gears

It was at least an hour, 4 or 5 students traded out. Everyone got a chance to cut. The indexer certainly wasn't manual... all they had to do was press an advance on the controller to advance one...

Cutting Tetrix gears

During the fall some of the FRC team mentors the middle school FTC team. This is a great opportunity for students from both teams to get some shop time. Cutting gears isn't something normally time...

Re: Need some recommendations for tooling

+1 for a lathe.

One of our cnc mills was donated by a local company that was upgrading. You would be wise to develop a community relationship... you might be surprised what would happen. I became a...

Re: Shopbot users - what have you learned?

I uploaded a couple more shopbot photos. I also included a drill/tap op on a cnc knee mill and an assembly photo. All the parts were done in the school shop this year. The team has a group of shop...

Re: Shopbot users - what have you learned?

Just the KFLOP. The adapter board plugs directly into the DB37 connector and the 16 pin ribbon cable on the Shopbot I/O board in place of the original Shopbot motion controller. I skipped the 20 pin...

Re: Shopbot users - what have you learned?

It does that 0.0625 aluminum sheet so easily. The video doesn't really do it justice.

This part was done in two operations. The first we drilled all the holes while the material was clamped to the...

Re: Shopbot users - what have you learned?

Yes. We found we had better chip evacuation with a through material cut, full depth. Slotting can be problematic for sure. Endmills are designed to cut on the flutes as well as the ends. It's a lot...

Re: Shopbot users - what have you learned?

We used a Shopbot this season for a lot of our parts. We also have two other cnc mills but the router has the largest area and the fastest spindle. It does 0.0625" and 0.125" sheet aluminum just...
