Re: What to use for ballast

Tungsten, being the densest material you can buy on McMaster.

Or, you know, scrap steel that can be had for free from almost anywhere...

We've taken a metallic pneumatic storage cylinder and...

Re: pic: This stack goes to up to 11!

885 made a capped stack 11 totes high. Why? Because of course they did.

Re: Best way to cool CIM motors?

Two CIMs should not be heating up during a match unless they are being very over-worked. Gear your mechanism more effectively to solve your real problem, don't address the symptom of over-heating...

Re: Need 1/2 in key banebot wheels!

VexPro Versa hubs can come with a 1/2in key drive, as do several AndyMark hubs. Either of these hubs will connect to numerous FRC-type wheels that you can cover in whatever tread makes you happiest.

Re: Safety Issue: Robots Moving in Pits

Precisely (part of) my point: any useful sort of device to stop a robot from driving off will occupy a lot of space that should be reserved for other usage. Theoretically it could be made with a very...

Re: Safety Issue: Robots Moving in Pits

Consider making a robot 'playpen' instead. A plywood sheet covered in carpet with a rigid barrier around the edge. Robot drives on carpet, works with any chassis, robot can't drive away, no blocks to...

Re: Safety Issue: Robots Moving in Pits

This too. Heck, if something went wrong our robot would tip over, blocks or otherwise...

I've also seen wheels climb on top of blocks and drive off them. Blocks are not fool-proof.

Re: Safety Issue: Robots Moving in Pits

Okay, dude. That was not at all obvious from what you described.

It sounds as if you'll be making it available for any team to use, so how will it be general enough to work with any team's...

Re: Safety Issue: Robots Moving in Pits

What happens when a robot drives off of the platform? Or am I missing something?

Re: Programmers on the Drive Team

Thank you for the reply. I don't agree with your reasoning (I wouldn't want to do that on one of our robots), but I understand it.

Re: Programmers on the Drive Team

Not if you buy a quality 3-axis joystick (I used to be skeptical of this too). We bought two Thrustmaster T16000m joysticks this year and they are awesome. It seems silly to me to spend thousands of...

Re: Safety Issue: Robots Moving in Pits

I am going to assume that this is an honest question (not a rhetorical one) and answer it as such.

No one, I assume, will be driving their robot in the pit like they drive it in a match. At a race...

Re: Safety Issue: Robots Moving in Pits

We did grow into the alley, slowing down traffic. However, it was only for 15-60s at a time so it never seemed to be a large impediment. Our pit-neighbors seemed to appreciate us being safe.

Re: Programmers on the Drive Team

This falls into the 'we geared are transmissions too fast, but it's okay because we slowed them in code' fallacy. It cripples the drivetrain's performance artificially. I've never had a driver that...

Re: Safety Issue: Robots Moving in Pits

I would be quite upset if we were prohibited from driving the robot on the ground in our pit because it is very easy to do it safely.

When we test our robot on the floor (which is about the only...

I think there's an XKCD on this topic...

Re: Tying back hair in the pits at competition

I posit that one should have their hair tied back in any area where safety glasses are required, whether or not they are using a power tool at that moment. The fact is that there are a lot of...
