I don't believe that there is a shaft encoder for the Tetrix Motor. You might be thinking of the Andymark Neverest motor( it's quite a bit larger) which has a hall effect encoder mounted to the back...

There isn't a lot stopping you from using LiFePO4 batteries on your robots for demos and practice time out of competition, it'd be good for demo's but there would probably be a performance difference...
