Re: Mecanum wheels on the front, regular wheels on the back

Team SCREAM's 2014 bot had traction in the front mecananum in the back to help with turning. When I asked them about it they said they preferred it over omni wheels.

Re: FRC971 Spartan Robotics 2016 Release Video

Would you mind ELI5, are you saying that you are able to zero the joints without the use of limit switch (hall effect switch, etc), a potentiometer or a hardstop?

Re: Need a good table top scrolling CNC!

865 has a 60x60 XZero Demon CNC Router with a HSD spindle.
Here's a video of it in action (https://www.facebook.com/marcus.quintilian/videos/1110045639014667/)

All in it was about $10k CDN which...

Re: Need a good table top scrolling CNC!

Same goes for the HSD, generally any spindle designed for CNC machining with a ER collet will be superior to a re purposed wood router.

We also have a fan cooled HSD spindle on our router that I...

Re: Need a good table top scrolling CNC!

I'd disagree. The water cooled spindle has less run out than the router. When your working with small end mills at a high RPM it can make a big difference with how fast your feeds are and tool wear....

Re: Need a good table top scrolling CNC!

I really don't like how the ball screw is being retained on one side by just the flex coupler on the end of a stepper motor. It could be fully supported on the other end but it really should have a...

Re: Best CAM software

HSMexpress/HSMworks FTW. It's free, it's easy, It works with solidworks and it doesn't suck.

If your fabrication team knows a bit of solidworks then I'd have them do the CAM. If your CAD team knows...

I definitely agree with this, after looking at how few dual wheel shooters were competitive in 2012 and 254 in 2014 we thought hooded shooters were surely the way to go. Due to the low mass of the...

Re: Cheapish CNC machine

Ball Screws :D, I wouldn't settle for anything less. I haven't tuned the machine yet but the tolerances are higher than my chinese digital caliper can read (perfectly acceptable for FRC use)

Thanks, I'm planning on writing a build log about it soon. The only thing that is custom on the machine is the spindle but that could be made on a drill press if need be. To keep the costs down I...

Re: Interesting/Cool Scaling Mechanism Designs

The way I interpret it is that if your robot no longer meets the criteria of scaled (falls, back drives) after the conclusion of the match it does not count.
