Re: What robot are you most proud of?

I mentored Team 975 from 2002 to 2006. Our 2006 bot was the best, even got the Motorola Quality Award at the VCU regional.

Compact 4 wheel drive, tons of traction and power, picked up and shot...

Re: Team Traditions

Team 975's first robot was mostly plywood, so the mantra was "Wood is good". Later robots were metal, but we always looked to put on a piece of wood, somehow.

Re: Found Source: 3/8" 7075 Hex

RC, make sure you get the material "certs" and the like from the producer. If you need to sell some off outside the FIRST community, that could be helpful. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the...

Re: Loss of Beloved FIRST Family Member

Chuck,

Please pass my condolences on to the Melton family. I'm sure your team will provide all the support they can, as did Team 975 when we lost Karl.

Re: friction on a threaded rod

This might be useful: www.eng.auburn.edu/users/marghitu/Screws.pdf

For other than a square thread, "The angle increases the frictional force by the wedging action of the threads".

Re: Tap Magic?

I've been wanting to try Anchorlube G-771 for tapping. It supposedly works well and is not as nasty as some other types.

Re: Metal Lubricants

WD-40 is not a very good lube. It is primarily Stoddard Solvent/paint thinner, which evaporates. What's left does gunk up. It does make a good grease cutter.

For light lubrication, air tool oil...

Re: What's your team motto?

Team 975's was "Wood is good". Our rookie year robot was mostly made out of wood and thereafter we tried to put at least a small piece of wood on each year.

Re: How did you findout about/became involved with in FIRST?

Of our two team founders and their two little brothers, three went on to engineering school (one on a FIRST scholarship) and one became a machinist. Unfortunately, my elder son's studies at VCU were...

An some old patented items are still hilarious today, like the fan that fastens to your head and is powered by a jaw strap. :D

Re: How did you findout about/became involved with in FIRST?

My older son found out about FIRST from his guidance counselor in his junior year. She thought he would like it. He had to join Team 346 which was 20 miles away. The next year, the 2002 season, he...

Was it the 2002 championship where Jeff Bezos was one of the keynote speakers? The one at Disneyworld, anyway.

Re: End of week 4!

Nothing wrong with screwing or bolting a machine together. The Linotype machine (incredibly complex) far predated practical welding.

Re: Transparent sticker printer paper?

Google it.

Avery Inkjet 8.5 x 11 Clear Sticker Paper ... about $2. per sheet.

Go to an office supply store and ask for clear full-sheet labels. They may have laser-compatible ones as well. An...

Re: Bearings don't fit (Drill rod) shafts ?

Taking a couple thou off an end of the unhardened drill rod shouldn't be hard if you can hold and spin it properly. We once had to open up two drive sprockets from 5/8" to 16 mm, or make the hole...

Re: How do I pick a fly wheel?

We had a saying, "Wood is Good". Mostly because we had no budget our first year and no machining facilities. I still have the promotional sign. It was painted on a scrap of Cedar wood siding: ...

Re: How do I pick a fly wheel?

Team 975 once made an effective ball shooter wheel out of plywood disks glued tgether. It was about 10" in diameter, 3" or so thick and grooved somewhat like a pulley. It had enough weight and...

Re: Bearing Block Question

Are you using single, self-aligning bearings, or just something sloppy enough that you get radial play? How far are things cantilevered?

Re: Timing Pulley Stock - Machining Question

I'd consider making a "key" that somewhat fit the gap between the teeth. It could be aluminum or soft copper wire. Hammer and file to fit somewhat, the height being a bit hit-or-miss. Don's idea...

Pay particular attention to the rated capacity of a bending brake. It's too easy to convert one to a "break".

Re: Arbor Press

Make sure you get one that has enough working height to accommodate both your workpiece plus the length of your broach. The smaller presses may have around 12" maximum capacity. That won't work...
