Re: pic: 4908 Prototype West Coast Drive

It looks like the gearbox output shaft is direct-driving the center wheel. If so, is there enough room to back out/remove a gearbox after the whole thing is assembled without taking the frame apart?...

Who won??? (I ask, only minutes after the posted drawing time. Not like y'all are busy putting on an event or anything...)

Re: Robostangs 548 2016 Offseason Swerve - V01 Sidestep

That's a great point - thanks a bunch! I knew a pushing robot would increase the necessary turning torque, but couldn't figure out how to account for it. I like this model a lot.

Re: Robostangs 548 2016 Offseason Swerve - V01 Sidestep

How did you decide on the gearing for your steering motors? It looks like the BAGs are geared at 100:1 (assuming both VP stages are 10:1), which would put you at 130 rpm (unloaded). Is that about...

Re: Acquiring a 3D Printer?

I have the privilege of using a SLA printer at work (specifically, a Stratasys Objet30 Pro) and man is it lovely! Unfortunately it costs tens of thousands of dollars and is thus not something a...

Re: Best looking robot ever?

2009 was a great year for looks, with 973's Raptor (https://www.chiefdelphi.com/media/img/767/767747c54073e3fe1a0db76c373a11c3_l.jpg) and 1771's Black...

Re: pic: Magnetic Grappling Hook

Shattering the magnets was definitely a concern. The purple side guards shown in the picture (actually made out of polycarb) extend 1/16" above the faces of the magnets, so the magnets themselves...

Re: pic: Magnetic Grappling Hook

Delrin, polycarb, and a little aluminum! I can't promise it'll lift much more than a robot, but it's looking like it will support ours.

Re: pic: Magnetic Grappling Hook

Yes, the same cable both engages the clamps and lifts the robot. Our winch is designed to run at 12 inches/second under the load of the robot's weight, so we could ostensibly complete the climb...

Re: pic: Magnetic Grappling Hook

I took two separate videos to showcase the two actions of the grappling hook (firing and latching), but in reality they would all happen in one fluid motion. We would pull up on the batter, fire the...

Re: pic: Magnetic Grappling Hook

In what way? This (or a different grappling hook) would be entirely contained within our frame perimeter until the last 20 seconds of a match.

Re: pic: Magnetic Grappling Hook

Oh yeah it's definitely more of an amusing prototype at this point rather than a finished product. I was hoping the magnets would have a more dramatic effect, so we might end up going with something...

Re: pic: Winch-atize me, Cap'n!!

Thanks for bringing up the gear tooth failure issue! If we end up breaking teeth, the plan is to buy some steel replacements from Boston Gear and hex-broach them ourselves. Also, I’m sure the winch...

Re: pic: Winch-atize me, Cap'n!!

Thanks!

The stall load is theoretically right around 1000 pounds, but I think we'll stick to just lifting ourselves so we can keep the current draw at a manageable level haha. Right now we're...

Re: pic: Winch-atize me, Cap'n!!

I should clarify here - the first couple iterations were designed but not built. When we finally got some free time to start building a climber, all the VP stuff had gone out of stock, forcing the...

No problem! Here's the ratchet attached to 60-tooth gear. Big thanks to our sponsor Lakeshore Cutting Solutions in Zeeland who waterjet cut this for us.

Re: pic: Winch-atize me, Cap'n!!

They are indeed from a Fisher Price gearbox! Mainly used them because they were lying around, and because they're so light. The first couple iterations of our winch used VersaPlanetaries, but with...

Re: pic: Winch-atize me, Cap'n!!

The overall shape of the gearbox is a little funky – kind of an “L” shape. That’s because the drum of the winch needed to fit down between the drive gearboxes near the center of our robot. There...

Re: pic: B.o.B. - Stronghold - 2

Wayne - Thanks! I'm excited to see y'all there too!

As for the intake, I'm pretty happy with how it centers the ball. It's by no means perfect, but after a few weeks of prototyping various ideas,...
